View Full Version : Online Canadian Supplement Stores
Hello All, this is my first post here, i've been reading here for alittle while now and just recently signed up. Anyway, just wanted to let all you know that supplements canada and snd canada have jacked up their prices on several popular supplements, In case you don't already know there are serveral other canadian supplement site with prices that are much lower and reasonable. I don't mean to trash these companies, but I was upset to find their new prices much higher then everyone else as I WAS a long time customer.

The products they import originate (more or less) from the US.
SuppCanada/Popeye's gave me the same sad explination last week when I went in and they told me the prices were going up in a few days...

I was expecting this to happen. Interestingly enough I remember prices never budging when the dollar reached parity. Amazing how it only took a couple weeks of a low dollar for a reaction to occur but over a year of parity and nothing happened. I don't know whether this is the suppliers or the stores fault however they are running themselves out of business. I surely hope they don't come crying to the consumer when all our business starts to go to american e-tailers when after the exchange and retarded shipping prices it's still cheaper to buy from the states. Honestly some of the prices I see in Canadian e-tailers I could just make a large order from a big e-tailer in the states and sell at cheaper prices than you would see at any Canadian site and still make money.

seeing as i sponsor this site ( dont apprectaite the fact u posted another website bossman, but whatever)
i can tell all of you, and i am sure sean summers can back this up. My costs from suppliers went up anywhere from 20-30%.
So ask yourselves this? How do i justify eating all of that? to keep the price low for my customers.
So far i have not raised any of my prices due to me having a abundance of stock that i bought at the lower prices before the dollar took a plunge and i am a tiny store compared to popeyes and snd.
So ask yourself this. How can a tiny store keep prices the same, yet popeyes/snd cant? when they have enormous buying power and huge warehouses?
Its easy, they see this as a way for them to make more profit on products currently bought at lower prices. Where-as i will not do this!!! Only when i have to buy more stock at the new price will i raise the price, but it will only raise HALF of what the new price percentage to me is. so if my price is up 20%, i will raise by only 10% and eat the rest.
Why? because i am not stupid, people wont pay 20-30% more for a product, that the got a month earlier for less.
* sorry kinda of a rant at the same time in this post

I used to buy at snd before comming to this site but out of loyalty, stuck with them. But now they`re charging $120 for 10 lbs of optimum whey. Even with a 10% eventual increase as stated by physique his site is the best to buy off.

May I ask when the dollar was strong how long was the lag before suppliers lowered their prices? Or was there any change?

Yeah, it sucks. Guys like physique are getting screwed by the suppliers who are using the dollar as an excuse to raise prices, even on stock they already have in their warehouses.
Meanwhile, we never saw the decrease in prices when we were at parity. They blamed that on the cost of gas. Well, the dollar's low again, but so is gas. So where exactly is the logic behind this?
Simply put, greed. The suppliers are greedy jerkoffs that see an opportunity to gauge their resellers and the consumer.
Nuthin we can do about it, afaik.

kloan you really have no clue what you are talking about. I work for a distributor and I know that when the dollar was high we dropped our prices. Our shipping costs have soared and Purolator didn't drop their prices with the recent drop in gas prices - what are we to do. One of our products increased $3 per bottle from the manufacturer. Physique runs a good business but most stores don't. We run specials twice a year. Some retailers take advantage and stock up others sit on their ass and complain. It's really quite amazing how very few of the stores don't think outside of the box, remain the same year after year and complain how they don't get the sales.
Stores have to purchase in bulk - whether it's in a chain or a bunch of shops go together - this will lower their price. They should also have a web presence....etc.
Clearly not what you think. Oh yeah ON Gold Standard should be dropping in price soon. Whether the retailers drop it is a different story. I really don't know why guys are stuck on that product. I think there are better blends out there at a cheaper price. Just because a certain website says it is #1 is very misleading. Is it #1 because of overall sales, because of taste, because the retailer makes the biggest margin...etc.
Also, I cannot stress this enough but I know everyone is out for a great deal but you really do get what you pay for especially in the supplement business. Sure you will get exceptions to the rule....but this generally holds true.
Keep up the good work Physique!

how is the consumer supposed to know you dropped your prices?? all any of us can go on is what we're told by the retailers, and what the sticker prices say.
if the prices didn't drop in the stores, but you did drop you prices, then the retailers are to blame. how am i supposed to know that?
from my point of view, i've only seen prices rise.. that's all i can base my opinion on since i'm not a retailer and i'm not a supplier. i guess you're right, i don't have a clue how the supplier/retailer system works, since i'm not either. but i do know i haven't seen any decreases in price.
btw, personally i used to buy the ON gold standard because it was the only line i know of offers 100% natural. do you know of any other products that offer that? i'm looking for a new brand, since i haven't find it down here (yet).

Thanks for the "insiders" view Sean. Unfortunately it is as I guessed and many Canadian e-tailers ****ed their customer loyalty by not lowering prices when their cost went down.
I'm with you on ON Gold Standard. Shitty blend, shitty taste and shitty gas.

PVL has a natural one and so does Allmax. I think Precision/Interactive may have one but I can't remember at the moment. I think BioX also. By natural I assume you mean sweatened with stevia not without flavor - is that correct?
My point is that there is more to it than just one side. There are many factors that go into pricing. However, the company that previously distributed ON was known to have higher margins.

thanks for the brands.. didn't know allmax had a natural one as well. by natural, i mean naturally flavoured and sweetened. i hate artificial sweeteners and flavours.
right now im hoping theres a brand/flavour that is not only all natural, but has digestive enzymes in it. my last two jugs have been from two different companies, but each had digestive enzymes in them. its the first time ive tried that, or that ive seen it, but man it works GREAT for eliminating gas. i remember now how frickin gassy i used to be drinking the other stuff....

ON has aminogen in it doesn't it? Are the last two jugs from different companies higher in isolate or pure isolates? To me the switch from concentrate to isolate was much more helpful than adding exogenous enzymes.

What`s with all the ON hate? It has isolates as a primary source of protein, mixes well and tastes good to me. Why the negative feedback?
it tastes good to you ritch? what else have you tried?
taste in subjective. i think it tastes like shit and has enough concentrate in the blend to give me GI discomfort, this is true with most blends not just ON.

great question. Most companies gave us a week, maybe less to guy at the lower prices. I emailed a couple companies and voiced my opinin on this.
So they stock their warehouses with product bought at lower prices, then charge us more to get it when things change, thus they make more profit.
as u can see its not only retailers that do this, but the suppliers too.
*PVL was the last company to raise prices. they will do it tomorrow.

I`ve used bio-x, optimum, eas, champion, sci-fit, kaizen, designer protein (Dan Duchaine`s), biochem, cytosport whey, iron teck, allmax, whey one and ultimate nutrition. 90% of the time chocolate flavor mixed in water. The only one I never liked was that prostar crap because it just did not mix. One`s I haven`t used but would consider are pvl and dymatize. On physiques site the pvl 10lbs is very affordable. If anyone knows what it compares to taste and mixability wise, please fill me in, would like to know about the dymatize as well.
I`ve always used the concentrate primarily blends. No big problems with digestion, as long as it tastes o.k. and mixes well, I`m happy. The optimum has isolate listed as the first ingredient, so I think it`s a good buy. Plus now I`m at my biggest using the optimum so I may just stick with it. Just was surprised to hear so many bad reviews. I take it you only use an islolate 5151?

i also use the O.N. and am wondering whats with the bad reviews as far as i know it has the most isolates per concentrate in its class

****BREAKING INDUSTRY NEWS****
Now I'm not sure what will happen with ON protein WRT the pricing - I just heard that GNC purchased Optimum Nutrition!!!
Also, GNC will be increasing the price of their proteins over the next few days. Ultimate Nutrition is first (starting today) - the price for their isolate will go from low $40's to low $50. Sorry to be the one to break the news but it is always good to support the guys who support this site. Check out Physique - I'm sure he will help you out and you will be helping out a good guy.

Yeah I have to use an isolate. I usually go either whey isolate or MPI. I pretty much have to as I use a fair amount of protein powder and if I used a concentrate blend I would be rejected from any sort of social interactions. If I could use a blend or straight WPC I certainly would. Rocky Road Optimum wasn't bad I found the rest I tried to be shit. As long as the price is comparable I don't see an issue.
