All right guys,
I promised you an update last time and we speculated that launch should be around the 17th of November.
Well, the new CPUs, Motherboards and memory are now trickling down the channels as I type this.
Reviews are highly positive.
NCIX is already carrying multiple variations of the Intel Core I7, the cheapest one being at < 400$. You will also need a new motherboard and probably new memory sticks.

thanks for the update.

The cost to benfit ratio is really high right now, might wanna give it a miss for a bit.

Well that all depends what you're upgrading from.
But in general, early adopters always pay a premium and this is true for most everything IT.

not really, when the average MB is 400 and the average processor is 400, the 10-12% gain over a c2d processor is not worth it.

Please re-read the part where I said "Well that all depends what you're upgrading from"...and the 10-12% is across board low average for NOW. You get up to 50% increase in speed in some more specific applications.
More and better multi-threaded applications and games are around the corner that will also benefit from the new SSE 4.2 instruction set...so think of it as a better (as in longer) future proof investment than a C2D. Also your C2D motherboard and RAM are now obsolete. So you purchase them at a lower price but you use them for only a single generation. If you buy x58 LGA 1366 based mobos and DDR3, you will be able to use at least the next generation Intel CPU after this one...again, making your purchase more future proof.
So it should not just be a question of looking at some benchmark and getting the average improvement figure and basing your decision on that fact alone. This is being a bit short sighted.
And re-read the part where I mention that "in general, early adopters always pay a premium and this is true for most everything IT" ;)
So to recapitulate, if you are an enthusiast or if you want the latest and greatest and the more future proof system and have the money to do so, then the new Intel architecture is for you.
If you are only interested in surfing the web and writing emails or don't have the money for the Core i7, either get a cheap C2D based system, or wait until next year when prices will be much lower.

I used to be an hardcore overclocker and last gen freak. I had some early press release from intel. It's over now, spent way to much $$ time and nights...
Speaking of the lastest technology, I suggest to wait till 2009 for mainstream socket LGA1160 and lynnfield/havendale cpus. Cheaper, dual channel lower power consuption and heat.

Yeah, but like you mentioned, the LGA1160 will only supports lower binned CPUs than the LGA-1366.
It really boils down to wants, needs and funds :)
quads with HT, dual vga card but no 3channels
edit : I should not post this but we aren't on a PC forum... :)

Btw, that sheet doesn't mention anything about speed bins and you shouldn't need to worry, this has been known for a while :D

I bought a sub $1000 laptop for the interim. It does all that I need, for now. When I get things rolling for my web site/store then I'll be upgrading and hopefully a better OS will be out then Vista.
