I keep plugging away at lifting and fear that any day my left elbow will be in agonizing pain again. Nerve testing last year said it was a pinching of the Ulnar nerve. Cortisone treatments only made it controllable but I couldn't lift. My PT had run out and I was given Oxis to deal with it.

Finally a bone scan found "Severe Osteoarthritis" in the elbow. Dr changed my meds and put me on Meloxicam 7.5 mgs per day....I can take up to 15 if needed. I felt relief with in a few days..and in a week I was back to the gym lifting again. I've been on it now for almost a year, I feel the arm a bit, but am now able to function and work out. I know the dangers of it causing stomach problems but so far I'm fine.

As we age our body needs longer to recover. Our tendons, and supporting muscles diminishes and we have more injuries. The fluid in the joint is diminished. I have sagging skin where I never ever have before.

But weight lifting is suppose to be good for us as we age?

Who else here feels these aches and still works out?

"It's not the age, Honey. It's the mileage." LOL

With that being said, I'm a broken and battered many times over 29 years old. I feel the aches and chronic injuries, and I still workout. I couldn't not...

As I have aged I notice that I am more injury prone. The only really difference I have made is lowering the poundage on the weights and keeping sets in the 12 rep range, instead of 8-10.

I used to be hurt all over all the time, now I've got it down to minor tendon/ligament damage in my right elbow and a torn piriformis that finally seems to be healing up. I find it helps A LOT to pay really close attention to nutrition as I get older. I don't mean just counting calories, carbs, and protein... but also making sure I get all my healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, phyto-nutrients, fiber... and I need to get enough water every single day now. The worst thing about lifting into my 40s isn't how easily I get hurt, it's how long it takes me to get better! Eating well genuinely seems to help with that.

Also, if a particular exercise hurts, I just find something else to work that muscle group with.

Finally, old timers like us need to really be aware of what our bodies are telling us. Younger lifters can make mistakes when trying to figure if something is good pain, "just" pain, or something more serious. We can't afford to take too many chances with stuff like that. We need to know what's going on, and respond to it quickly. we can't let our egos get in the way.

I hear ya FC. I've been having back issues for years. I thought I finally had it beat by doing my daily stretchs and stregthening my core, losing weight around my gut ect. It's been going on a couple years since i had bad bout. Then last week I blew it out again doing rack pulls. fackkkkkkkk

aswe get more years in this game we gotta listen more to our bodies, you can stimulate growth with more than just big weights, and crazy intensity.train smarter not harder is the new game for us.when the bodies up for a hard and heavy one ill do it but if its not i dont get bummed out any more, just have a plan b for those days.

I've just about recovered from tendonitos in 6 different locations (down to 1).
Age happens (40+). What I'm learning is that I have to concentrate carefully on form in all of my lifts. Rippetoe's Starting Strength was a real help. I've also learned to ice, massage (cross friction & myofascial), wrap and use A535 as a part of my caily work out routine.

I've also discovered I have to take my time. Powercleans and the other quick lifts are tremendously productive for me but my tendons aren't strong enough yet so Rows and Chins will have to do for now (ratz).

The other big element is eating to recover. Unlike my youth the only real way for me to get stronger and recover from workouts is to eat.

Any other clues gratefully accepted.

Definitely listen to tendonitis.....the chronic inflammation that causes it deteriorates tendons...after 10yrs of chronic biceps tendonitis (distal) and not paying attention (taking naproxin and wrapping my elbows) I have paid.
