okay, we've all seen it, some of us may actually do it.
partial reps.

i have always done full reps. curls, press, squat, whatever. Full extension, to full contraction.

in the gym, more and more i am seeing guys do partial reps, mostly on bench. some of these guys, who i once mocked, are getting big. One tool only moves the bar 6-8 inches, and does a major ass lift as well. the worst form i have ever seen. but, hes getting huge.

whats the general concensus? i would think personally that they are risking injury by not stretching out the muscle.

I've been seeing the same thing, but always from small guys who i've never seen in the gym before. I just asumed it's new guy's that don't know any better.. Never seen any big dudes doing this.

Same here - it's usually the new guys who have just discovered the juice. Sure you can push more weight for more reps but I'm sure they'd get just as big going full ROM with sufficient weight

I like doing a bunch of partials for my last set on a muscle. Burns real nice.

Had a friend tear his tricep right in front of me doing partial reps on tricep extension to his forehead, and 165 pound drop right on my two toe's blood in my shoes and 2 broken toe's took a month before i could walk good. All you heard in the gym was a big snaps. My training partner missed 6 months of training.

I have found partials to be of great help to get past lifting plateaus. I only do them on my last set and only after my last rep. It may look stupid but for me it has helped alot.

cheating to squeeze in another rep or two is not what i meant. its these guys whose full workout involves half motions

ya thats stupid, they just do that to lift more weight to show off or for their ego

Thats because they either cant lift the weight correctly ie too weak or because they have no idea how to perform the exercise. Partials such as board presses etc have there place but you need to understand the reasoning behind them.

Agree with Praetorian, partials have their place and this should not be constitute the whole workout.

Partials are great for strengthening a certain movement in a lift! Are you sure the guys you're watching aren't Powerlifters instead of Bodybuilders? Hell, I've done it to try and improve on certain lifts and it works great! Partials have there place...

Also, Some people believe that you don't need full Contraction to build muscle and only lift or lower the weight until the Muscle fully contracts and then they stop BOB PARIS among others. Some believe in the weider principles of full movements. Another thing it could be...

I used to do partials on the bench, like stopping couple of inches short of the chest, and I found those to be pretty bad on my tendons. Stopping that accelerated bar put extra strain on the triceps tendon. For me slowing it down and then stopping it with the help of my chest showed to be better. But if a guy has healthy tendons and joints, I dont see why he would grow less doing partials rather than full rom. That being said, if any of those a**holes boast about their bench, they deserve a good smack behind the head to set their ideas straight.
