TORONTO - Media reports say Ontario will join Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Quebec in banning cellphone use while driving.

There are several media reports that the Liberal government will introduce a bill to ban electronic distractions next Tuesday.

The reports say Transport Minister Jim Bradley will be seeking to prohibit all use of phones, BlackBerrys and GPS devices by drivers in the province.

The reports say the law will likely only apply to those behind the wheel and not passengers in the front or back seat.

Previous attempts to introduce private member's bills banning cellphones have failed.

Banning hand held cellphones I can see, keep your hands on the wheel, but they want to ban in car GPS systems? Seems like only base model vehicles don't have a nav system these days.

it'll probably be banned like the cellphone, ie don't screw around with it while you're rolling. So if you set it up before you go (or use bluetooth in case of cellphone) you're good to go

I see guys pulling up with video's playing on their dash. Can someone get more stupid than that? Bluetooth cells are good. Anything else, no.

its pretty bad when the government has to get involved when peoples common sense should prevail. i think society is experiancing "un"evolution lol when people can't figure out for them selves that having 4 different devices with bright lights shining suction cupped to there windsheilds while texting there freinds at 60 miles an hour on a busy road is a good idea. not that a person can see anything anyway with all the 20x20 foot reflective signs avery 50 feet down the side of the road and all the cool people that never shut there foglights off.

there was my rant for the day lol.. i feel better

I saw a cop talking on a cell phone in his cruiser today while driving. Aren't they supposed to be setting an example?

I think this is great. Unfortunately they voted yesterday in NB not to pass any sort of ban at all.

I'm all for it, been almost run over on my motorcycle many times by people not paying attention while chatting on their cell phones..

But then again, aren't police operating laptops / radios / etc in their cruisers while in traffic? :S

So if holding something while talking is going to be illegal are they also going to ban having a coffee while chatting with passengers in the car? Or can you hold the phone and just listen to somebody on the other end but not talk (married guys know what I'm talking about).... or talk to somebody in your car while your hands are empty... what if you're holding your coffee and singing along to the radio (cuz that new Britney song is just so ****ing catchy).... the cash grab potential of this is incredible.

as long as they still signal..

Word to that..

You cant use the signal lights with a cellphone in your hand.

I guess these cell phone addicted morons think I can read their mind about their intentions. I'm, gonna start carrying a rock in my hand and smash it off the side of car of the next dickwad that almost runs me over due to their negligence.

Thats the answer to this problem... Every pedestrian should just carry a good size rock in their pocket.

:puff:puff:puff:puffGreat point... the thing here is, a good driver KNOWS what he can and cant manage while driving... a bad driver THINKS they can manage anything... unfortunately, there arent any "good" and "bad" driver awards, telling us who is allowed to talk on a cell or text while driving...

Bingo. Bad drivers haven't the slightest clue just how shitty their driving is. And when you try to show them, suddenly you're the asshole. Go figure. :D
