I don't know if Spider vs. Predator is really a tough one to pick... with all due respect to Cote, of course... So I've changed up the poll a bit

Drew McFedries is a powerful puncher out of Pat Miletech’s camp in Iowa. His trend in the UFC has been to either knock guys out or get taken down and tapped. Thales Leites looks like a bad match-up for him, as he has a strong chin and superior submission skills.

Gray Maynard has excellent wrestling skills but isn’t much of a finisher. Getting tapped out by Nate Diaz on TUF doesn’t count on his official record, and he whined his way out of what could have been a loss to Rob Emerson at Fight Night 11. Maynard can, therefore, claim to be undefeated. “No Love” Clementi has done pretty well for himself since dropping to welterweight. He’s a well-rounded fighter with a salty personality. This is a nice match-up of youth and experience, with the winner likely to move up the welterweight ladder in the UFC.

Tyson Griffin is one of my favourite fighters. He’s a cardio and conditioning machine with great wrestling skills. He goes all-out all the time, but he’s had trouble finishing fighters who can keep up with his energy level. Sean Sherk has the same skill set as Griffin, but he’s a bit stronger and more of a finisher. This should be an exciting fight. Sherk has the advantage on paper, but I’m going to be pulling for Griffin.

Fabricio Werdum is a great submission fighter who trains at the Chute Boxe academy. He’s never been knocked out or forced to tap in his pro MMA career. He has reportedly signed a new contract that puts him in line for a heavyweight title shot if he can get by newcomer Junior dos Santos. Like Lietes vs. McFedries, this bout pits and good striker with suspect submission defense against a tap-out artist with a strong chin. Werdum vs. Big Nog would potentially be only the second UFC title fight to not involve at least one American-born fighter.

Thiago Alves is a Muay Thai fighter who also has a black belt in BJJ. He’s coming off of five straight KO victories, including a very impressive win over Matt Hughes at UFC 85. He was slated to face Diego Sanchez in what would likely have been an amazing fight. Sanchez got hurt, however, so Alves will instead face off with the less exciting but still very tough lay and pray expert Josh Koscheck. If Alves can keep from being taken down and held there, he’ll likely be next in line to face GSP. That could be a truly great fight, so I’m definitely pulling for Alves here.

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva is, pound for pound, the greatest striker in MMA today. TKO middleweight champion Patrick Cote is a hard puncher with knockout power. Anything can happen in MMA, but realistically the best Cote can hope for here is that he lasts long enough to keep it interesting. Incidentally, this will be the first championship bout in UFC history where neither fighter was born in the USA.

Always a pleasure to see Anderson fight.

Actually this card is one of the better ones in a while. Every fighter has a decent match and there aren't any real gimme fights. I'm looking forward to seeing Junior fight and finding out if Werdun will be dumped on his ass in round one. I was disappointed to read that Sanchez was hurt, he is one of my favourites. I think Koschek will win with a submission, he should be a good match for Alves. Neither fighter has a glass jaw, so it should be good if they stay on their feet or go to the mat.

Werdun's never been KO'd, so if Junior stops him in the first, I'll be impressed.

I, too, was looking forward to Sanchez vs. Alves, and I agree that Kos and Alves are also a pretty good match-up... but I simply cannot understand how you see Kos winning by submission. Alves is a BJJ black belt. Those guys only get tapped by other BJJ black belts, not by wrestlers like Kos. Kos has no real high-level submission skills. He has four submission victories on his record, but those were all from choking out guys who are primarily striker (like Drew McFedries).

Alves might tap Kos out, or Kos could take a decision.

Where did Alves get his black belt? I didnt even know he had one. IF it isnt a gracie certified black belt, its as good as a one coming from a cracker jack box. There are only 5 belts in BJJ, and they are prolly the hardest belts to attain under proper Gracie instructors. It took me 5 years just to get my purple belt, and Ive rolled with and even tapped a few "blackbelts" in bjj tourneys all accross the pacific northwest, and most of them were Washington/ Oregon tourneys. The color of the belt holds no meaning until where it came from is clarified.

I looked into it a little deeper, and the only places I've seen Alves confirmed as having a black belt were Wikipedia and various MMA opinion sites. He's not listed as one on the ATT site... so quite possibly I'm wrong there... but Alves has been with American Top Team since turning 19 (so 6 years or so). Their head instructor is Ricardo Liborio, who was awarded his black belt in '93 by Master Carlson Gracie himself. Is that good enough for you?

Belt or no belt, I don't see him getting tapped by Koscheck.

EDIT: Before joining ATT, Alves trained under 7 time BJJ world champion André Galvão!
ANOTHER EDIT: ...he also trained with Marco Antonio Barbosa.

Here is some footage of Alves grappling. Does he look to be wearing a black belt to you? The footage is a bit rough, it's hard to tell:

I wish Patrick the best. We might see an upset, but I hope he just gives Silva a good show and can come away with some respect and props for his effort.

Simply put, he's ****ed.

It's pretty incredible that a guy could start out his UFC career with three straight losses (To Ortiz at UFC 50to Doerksen at UFC 52, and to Leben on the first Ultimate Fight Night) and then come all the way back to win five straight and get a Main Event title shot. I have to take my hat off to Cote... and I hope he looks good in there. If he can hang with Silva at all, he'll be able to establish himself as a top guy in the UFC even if he loses.

I'm actually pretty excited about this whole card now.

Griffin vs. Sherk and Kos vs. Alves are both fights where I’m really pulling for one guy to win (Griffin and Alves, respectively) and the other guy (Sherk and Kos) to get humbled… but where that outcome is far from being any kind of sure thing. (It's cool that Sherk's a bodybuilder... but Griffin is just one of those guys that I always pull for no matter who he is facing... like Randy, Big Nog, GSP, Rampage, Clay Guida, Joachim Hansen, Shinya Aoki, and Takanori Gomi).

I want Clemeti to beat Maynard to win one for us older guys… but Maynard is a tough match-up, too…

Verdum vs. Nog would be a treat for fans of ground fighting, so I want Wedum to win… but you never know what to expect when a veteran is facing a UFC newcomer. Also, dos Santos trains with Spider Silva, which has to help his striking.

I don’t have any vested interest in McFedries vs. Leites, but striker vs. grappler matches are almost always intriguing.

I’m looking forward to the whole card, top to bottom.

Yes it does look like a black belt, but contrary to that, he doesn't look very savvy on the ground at all, and his opponent ****in schooled him bad. Almost had Alves in an Oma Plata right of the bat then finished him with a mounted triangle in 3:35s. I dunno, I question his grading and the qualifications they were done under. Not saying he isn't one, but come on, if anyone new thier bjj, its plain as day he was leaving himself open to some pretty basic attacks, that got turned into some fancy submissions.

I sure wouldn't have wanted to be on the receiving end. I had cramps just from watching. Just have to add that Junior looked his best in the ring for his fight.

Just the sound of them over the and above the noise of the crowd let alone the way some of them turned Crusty by a good 20-30deg to the side. Kos is a stud to take some of those and keep coming forward IMO.
