Ben Weider, Montreal's baron of body building, who became an internationally renowned Napoleonic scholar and philanthropist, died Friday at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal.

His death comes six days before he was to inagurate the permanent gallery housing his multi-million dollar Napoleon collection at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

He was 85.

I feel bad for his family because they must have loved him but I don't think bodybuilding should owe any great "debt" to those shysters. Sorry I said it, but the Weiders were only ever in it for the money.

Never knew the Weider's were from Montreal. I am not going to comment on what I think they did or didn't for bodybuilding, but I shall wish he rest in peace and wish the best for his family.

Careful..
Who is not in it for the money? Thats what running a business is all about.., duh.
That fact is in the process of building a personal empire they also blazed a trail and helped make bodybulding what it is today. In fact Arnold owes much of his success to Ben Weider, as do many other BBers.

My dad just found out. He has a pair of old weights in his basement. Told me Ben sold it to him when he was in his late teens. He trained at the same gym as him.

I actually used those weights when I was in my teens.

Small world.

You are correct about Arnold "owing" Ben Weider for his success, especially the 1980 Mr. Olympia title.

There is a difference between making money through honest means and having integrity than misleading people and rigging contests.

Bodybuilding and physical culture was already growing long before the Weiders, and they just happened so sell a bunch of junk supplements and ideas through their media empire.

The "Instinctive Principle"? Please.

Don't forget about Bob Hoffman and York Barbell too.

I feel bad for the grand kids the most, but nobody can deny that they mislead people with their "Weider Research Clinic" that was located in a broom closet.

PS. YGM you goof.
