so the wife and I are in the market for a bigger vehicle...our pice point has us at a 2003-2004 HONDA ODYSSEY EX-L, around $17000 all in, about 2g more then i want to spend....also on the list is a same yr TOYOTA SIENNA, same $

makes me sick dealing with car dealers, i dont mind them making money off me, but dont want to get fleeced....you basically have to call them a liar

buddy on my hockey team said he would give me best price on a 2002 EXL with 72000km, asking $15500 fro it, i really doubt he will go where i want for an 2002....

THEN , i see HYUNDAI tucsons are offering (like most) cash prices...soooo

a 2008-9, tucson GLS with leather is 26000-6000.....then you get warranty and shit......FUUUUUCK....

anyone have any wisdom here...

My aunt just picked up an SUV from the States and imported it. Don't know the exact details but ended up saving about $11,000. No joke. Something to look at or consider.

They say the warranty's dont carry over, but I can assure you, if you make enough phone calls, head office will transfer the warranty.

yeah, no big savings used tho... or if it was a $70000 dollar one...still huge savings on high end, but we priced out what i was looking for, and by the time you pay $1500 to get it canadianfied and shit...MAYBE $1000 cheaper

I find what works for me is buying a car 1 or 2 years old, that way its almost half price and you still pretty much have full warranty.

I think my next car i will be leasing it, payments are cheaper and you always have a new car, never have to do any work to it.

-Straight up make the dealership GIVE you a 7 day insurance sticker
-Consider the cost of insurance.
-Check dept on the tire tread.
-get vehicle inspected by another garage/Car history report (CARFAX)
-Get free gas from them as well.
-You can negotiate ur interest rate so shop around...
-Any scratches on the car get them to buffer it out (Obvious)
-try and get them to do scotch guard on ur seats, under coating, detailing. (free)
-If u want extra stuff done get a busniess card, get them to refer u to someone and get names and have them set up arrangments.
-check automotive comsumer reports. Must consider repairs - parts and labor on dat sweet ride will cost.
-get them to lower the price!

IF they won't try to make you a happy customer, go else where. Worse service i ever got was from a toyota dealership, and i never went back and i spread the word about them. Best service i got was from a GM dealership and i go there sometimes just to hang out.... and hit on the secretary's... lol .. it should be all about them kissing ur ass IMO

every 7-11 has an auto consumers mag, check those out for consumer reports.. nice piece of info, surely avail to some extent on the internet

oh ya - auto trader, look at those as well - great gold mine of info there, see all the extras that car has, and see what they are asking as well as the mileage... lets face it u looking at resale value and price range.

best thing about this is u hav picked ur vehicle, many ppl walk into a dealership without knowing what they want, and 98% walk away with a car they dont really need or want. Last thing u want is to see a car u want but cause u never LOOKED around and bought the first thing u saw - so u missed out!

thank you all very much for the advice.. weds is D-day... wife cannot wait...as they say...HAPPY WIFE, HAPPY WIFE..haha

my uncle got back to be, a 2008 TUCSON full jam, i would save $9000 or so..but still too high, i only wanted a 4cyl and FWD....

i went to my friend (hockey team mate, whom is on vacation ) and for the 2002 for $15900, i said $14000 all in, NO CALL BACK..

found one this AM, honda dealer 3 hrs away, 2004 EXL, so 1 yr warranty asking $17900, i said i would like to pay no more than $18000 all in (still $4g more than i would like to spend on ANYTHING....lol), SAID it should not be a problem... fack!.. i think on weds i will say i can only do $17300..

talked to a co-worker tonite, used to sell cars....
says on a whole, they mark up ATLEAST $3500, and would like to make $1200

so, my $17900-$3500+1200 x 1.13 (tax)= $17550...so maybe i will not be getting gouged!!!

Honda Odessey's are good. My parents have one, bought brand new in 2001 and it's still rocking just fine. When I was 19/20, a friend and I had it up to 195mk/h on a small back road on a good straight away. Smooth as a baby's ass, and carries kids the same way. My parents have 3 kids 10 and under, and it fits everyone great.

I'm not sure the amount of km they have on it, but it's the daily driver for my mom, and it's done some decent trips. Comfy for adults, even in the back seats.

i buy and sell cars regularly as part of my income. take the following advice.

you didnt mention it, but if you arent financing the car DONT BUY FROM A DEALER. you will never get a better deal from a dealer (99% of the time at least). buy privately. in BC at least you pay 2 taxes at a dealer and 1 tax private and no one ever claims the full amount they paid when they buy private. this can save you a lot of money in taxes (1500 or so on a 18000 car).

just remember this: dealers exist to make $. if you buy from them you are paying $ that you dont need to.

Lots of good deals out there, i'd think private also is way to go, but get your mechanic to look it over. Also make sure the it passes the tests for safty and also emisions test if you live in Ontario
