ACQUIRED – The Blue Bombers originally signed Stegall as a free agent in September 1995.

2006 (WPG) – Stegall showed no signs of slowing down in his 12th season with the Blue Bombers. Despite being limited to 14 starts due to injuries, he still managed to lead the Blue & Gold in receiving with 79 catches for 1,269 yards and seven TDs.

His 1,269 yards were fourth best in the CFL while his 79 receptions were third best in the league and helped earn him CFL and East Division All-Star honours. Stegall produced one of the most electrifying plays in team history on July 20 at Commonwealth Stadium when he hauled in a Kevin Glenn and scampered 100 yards to produce a last second, game-winning touchdown against the Edmonton Eskimos. It was one of five times during the season Stegall was named winner or co-winner of the CJOB Offensive Player of the Game Award.

Stegall was also twice named the CFL Offensive Player of the Week. The first time came following a 10-catch, 254-yard yard performance versus the Esks in Week Six. He did it again following a Week Seven performance against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats that saw him haul in 11 catches for 162 yards.

Stegall provided some oomph to the Bomber offensive attack in the East Semifinal. He had a pair of catches for 76 yards, including one for 59 yards, in a 31-27 loss to the Toronto Argonauts.

The Turtle-Man also hauled in a pair of post-season honours. He was named a CFL All-Star for the sixth time of his career and a Division All-Star for the seventh time in 12 seasons.

2005 (WPG) – Like fine wine, Stegall continues to get better with age. Stegall showed in 2005 why he is still among the CFL’s preeminent pass catchers. The Turtle-Man snared 52 passes for 1,184 yards and 17 TDs. His 17 TD receptions were best in the CFL. Those 17 TD catches helped him establish a new CFL record for career TD receptions with 129. His 22.8 average yards per reception was also tops in the league. Stegall had one of the best individual games ever for a Bomber receiver on Oct. 10 at Canad Inns Stadium against the visiting B.C. Lions. He hauled in four passes for 234 yards and a phenomenal four TDs. The performance earned him CFL Player of the Week honours for Week 16. He was also named a CFL West Division All-Star for the sixth time in his career and was a CFLPA All-Star for the fifth time. He was the CJOB Bomber Player of the Game five times (Weeks 1, 4, 6, 10 and 11).

2004 (WPG) - Stegall played in 16 regular-season games. He became the club’s all-time receptions leader July 22 against the B.C. Lions with his 574th reception. He ended the season with a career total of 626 receptions. Stegall finished the season with 68 receptions for 1,121 yards and six touchdowns. He had three 100-plus yard games. Stegall’s performance moved him into eighth spot in CFL career receiving yardage.

2003 (WPG) – Stegall appeared in 18 regular-season games for Winnipeg, as well as the 2003 West Division semifinal. He led the CFL in touchdowns (15), receiving touchdowns (15) and non-kicker scoring (90). He also led the Blue Bombers in receptions (68) and receiving yards (1,144). From a league perspective, Stegall moved into fourth place in the CFL record books for career touchdowns (105) and took over second spot for receiving touchdowns (103). He also took over second spot in games with a receiving touchdown (73), sixth place for 1,000-yard receiving seasons (6) and sixth place for 100-yard receiving games (38).

CAREER – (2002) Stegall had one of the greatest individual seasons in CFL history. He led the CFL in receptions (106), receiving yards (1,896), yards from scrimmage (1,896), touchdowns (23), receiving touchdowns (23), 100-yard games (10), 100-yard receiving games (10), average yards per catch (17.9 – 50 min.) and non-kicker scoring (140). The Turtle-Man also set two major CFL records. He set a new league single-season record for touchdowns with 23 and a new league single-season record for receiving touchdowns, also with 23. Stegall set personal highs in several categories: receptions, receiving yards, yards from scrimmage, touchdowns, receiving touchdowns, multiple touchdown games, 100-yard games, 100-yard receiving games and points scored. He set or tied 12 Winnipeg Football Club records in 2002. Stegall capped off his tremendous year by winning the league’s Most Outstanding Player Award. His win was the eighth time a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers won the award in the history of the awards presentations. The Football Reporters of Canada named Stegall to its CFL All-Star Team for the fourth time in his career and for the third year in a row. His selection to the CFLPA All-Star Team marked the fifth time that he had been named to that team. He was also a CFLPA All-Star Team member in 1997, 1999, 2000 & 2001…(2001) The 2001 CFL season was another legendary one for Stegall as he earned both CFL All-Star and CFLPA All-Star accolades. Stegall achieved several milestones and put his name in the CFL record books once again. Five weeks after passing Perry Tuttle for fourth place on the Blue & Gold’s All-Time Receiving Yards list with 5,812 yards, Turtle Man vaulted over another great in the same category. With a five-yard catch at the 10:54 mark of the fourth quarter of Winnipeg’s mid-August game against the Toronto Argonauts, Stegall moved into third place on the club’s all-time receiving yards list. As if his receiving yards accomplishment wasn’t enough, Stegall added another laurel to his weighty football crown that game, as his four-yard catch on the second play of the fourth quarter was also a historic one. The catch – Stegall’s fourth of the contest – gave him 338 for his career, pushing him past 12-year veteran Ernie Pitts into fourth place on the football club’s all-time receptions list. Pitts had 337 in his illustrious Hall of Fame career. That same game, Stegall put his name in the CFL record book again by going six-straight games with a receiving touchdown, which tied him with 10 others for the fourth longest receiving TD streak in CFL history. Not surprisingly, Stegall set the Blue Bomber record of eight consecutive games with a receiving touchdown in 1997 (Weeks 6-13) – a mark that is the second best in CFL history. Former Stampeders’ great Terry Evanshen holds the CFL record of 10 straight games, set in the 1967 and 1968 seasons. The all-star slotback posted another fine performance against the Edmonton Eskimos (Oct. 5). He grabbed eight catches for 130 yards and one touchdown. The 100-yard game was Stegall’s fourth of the season. More importantly, it was the 25th 100-yard receiving game of his seven-year CFL career. The 130-yard performance pushed Stegall over 1,000 receiving yards for the season, which marked the fourth time in seven seasons he had accomplished the feat. The three touchdowns equaled his career high for touchdowns in a single-game set the year before (Winnipeg vs. Saskatchewan, Sept. 29, 2000). Stegall – who set a personal best of 78 catches in 2000 – eclipsed his career high in that Hamilton contest by notching his 80th reception of the season. Stegall missed the final two regular-season games taking care of a tender knee. Still, he finished the 2001 regular-season with four Top 5 league placings. His 14 receiving touchdowns led the CFL, while his 14 total touchdowns were second in that category. The 81 pass receptions he hauled in were second best in the league with his 1,214 receiving yards were fifth. Stegall wasn’t content to rest on his regular-season laurels in the post-season. He had a thrilling 70-yard touchdown catch against Hamilton in the East Division Final (Nov. 18). Then in the 89th Grey Cup (Winnipeg vs. Calgary @ Montreal, Nov. 25, Stegall made one of the greatest touchdown catches in the history of the big game. Late in the fourth quarter, Stegall went airborne between two Calgary defenders and came down with a score that put Winnipeg within five points. He finished the championship game with seven receptions for 118 yards and the one touchdown…(2000) The 2000 season was another chapter in Stegall’s storybook career. Appearing in 16 of Winnipeg’s 18 regular-season games, Stegall finished the year with 1,499 receiving yards – a total that was second best in the CFL. His 1,501 total yards were sixth best in the league in yards from scrimmage. His 15 receiving touchdowns led the CFL, with the 15 scores placing him in third place in the league in total touchdowns. His 19.2 yards per catch average was second best in the league for players with 30 receptions or more. He had seven 100-yard receiving games in 2000, five of which were for 145 yards or better. Stegall’s seven 100-yard games in 2000 tied his career best in that category, which he had previously in 1997. He has posted 21 100-yard games in his 71 regular-season appearances. Naturally, Stegall’s exceptional play led to his selection as Winnipeg’s Most Outstanding Player. Like the end zone, this honor was familiar territory for Stegall. He was also the team’s nominee in the category in 1997…(1999) Despite missing five games due to injury in 1999, Stegall still placed third in CFL receiving yardage with 1,193. He is a deep receiving threat that possesses breakaway speed and exceptional moves…(1998) Stegall played in just seven games, but still managed to snag 32 passes for 403 yards and six TDs…(1997) In just his third CFL season, Stegall established himself as an offensive force to be reckoned with. He caught 61 passes for a total of 1,616 yards and 14 touchdowns. His yards per catch average was a phenomenal 26.5 average – a CFL record that stands to this day. Stegall also showcased his special teams’ skills in the 1997 season. In Week 3 action against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Stegall blocked a Paul Osbaldiston punt attempt that resulted in a 32-yard blocked kick return touchdown for Kelsey Perrin (1st Quarter, Winnipeg @ Hamilton, July 11, 1997, Winnipeg 33, Hamilton 18). That performance led to Stegall’s selection as a CFL and East Division All-Star, the first of many times to come that he would be so honoured…(1996) Stegall dressed for 11 games his sophomore CFL season. He hauled in 34 catches for 613 yards and six TDs…(1995) Stegall came to Winnipeg in 1995, playing the last six games of the regular season. His performance was a harbinger of what was to come. He grabbed 25 passes for 469 yards and four TDs. He was a late cut of the NFL’s Green Bay Packers coming out of training camp…(1992-94) Stegall spent three years with the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals. He played in 21 games from 1992-94, focusing mostly on kickoff returns.

COLLEGE – Stegall was a three-year college starter at Miami of Ohio. He finished his college career with 106 receptions for 1,581 yards and was a three-time Mid-American All-Conference selection.

PERSONAL – Stegall and his Darlene are the proud parents of son Chase Hamilton. In the off-season, Stegall likes to dabble in the real estate market and owns property in Cincinnati and Atlanta. He was once voted the best looking man in the CFL.

Bombers honour Stegall

By JUDY OWEN

WINNIPEG (CP) - Milt Stegall became the CFL all-time touchdown king last month, now he has a ransom of gifts to go with the honour.

A pre-game tribute to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers slotback was held prior to Friday night's sold-out game between the 4-2-1 Bombers and the visiting Toronto Argonauts (2-5-0).
Some of the gifts the 13-year veteran received included a key to the City of Winnipeg, a new van, induction into the Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt and a street near Canad Inns Stadium will be renamed Milt Stegall Drive.

Stegall broke the CFL record of 137 TDs he'd shared with former running backs George Reed and Mike Pringle on July 27 against Hamilton.

His total sat at 140 TDs going into Friday night's game. Prior to the game, 138 of Stegall's TDs were shown on the Jumbotron at Canad Inns Stadium, with players from both teams glancing up at some of his scores during warm-ups.

The 37-year-old Stegall, who says this is likely his last season, was then feted at centre field by Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz, Manitoba Premier Gary Doer, CFL commissioner Mark Cohon, Blue Bombers CEO and president Lyle Bauer, team board chairman Ken Hildahl and Pringle.

"If someone had to break the TD record I held, I'm glad it's you because you've been such an ambassador to the league," Pringle told Stegall.

Reed was scheduled to attend the ceremony, but had to cancel for personal reasons.
Stegall's mother Betty, wife Darlene and son Chase, who zigged and zagged onto the field carrying an inflatable football helmet, were also at the game. It's the first time his mother has seen him play in Winnipeg, and first time she's been to one of his games since the 2001 Grey Cup Winnipeg loss in Montreal.

"These are times that I'll remember for the rest of my life," Stegall told the 29,533 cheering fans, who gave him a standing ovation.

"I've been here 13 years, over a third of my life, and it's been great."

The premier told Stegall he'd be inducted into the Order of the Buffalo Hunt, which recognizes leaders' outstanding and distinctive contributions. Other recipients include Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former U.S. president Jimmy Carter.

Doer also announced a Milt Stegall Scholarship has been set up to be given annually to a high school and post-secondary student.

"You're a class guy. You're a great athlete," Doer said.

Cohon presented Stegall with a photo plaque showing his record-setting TD.
"We are so lucky to have you in the CFL," Cohon said, adding with a smile that Stegall should continue playing past this season.

Bauer gave Stegall the keys to a new Dodge Caravan, a chair covered with a No. 85 Stegall jersey and a framed drawing of him and a list of his record TDs.

WINNIPEG - Milt Stegall wasn't offering any hints about his CFL future Tuesday as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers cleaned out their lockers, but the star receiver says he's not going to let the team's Grey Cup loss affect his decision.

The 37-year-old CFL all-time touchdown leader said he'll return to Atlanta this week and sit down with his wife Darlene to discuss what's best for the couple and their three-year-old son Chase.

"I still have it in me," said Stegall. "I still enjoy it, but that's not one of the factors that goes into if I'm going to play or if I'm not going to play."
The team's 23-19 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Sunday's Grey Cup won't be a factor either.

"What happened in the Grey Cup, what happened in the season has no bearing on what the decision is going to be," said Stegall, who finished the season with 69 catches for 1,108 yards.. Bombers head coach Doug Berry wants Stegall back and said the two spoke Tuesday morning but Stegall didn't tell him about his plans.

"I think we'll know soon enough," Berry said. "This isn't going to be a decision that Milt will drag out until May."

Stegall said he'd decide if he's coming back for a 14th season in "due time."

The main issue for Stegall is whether his family can manage another season with him away. During the season, his mother moves to Atlanta from Cincinnati to help look after his son while his wife runs the shoe boutique she owns.

"I think (my mom) will be sadder if I don't come back because she really loves spending time with Chase and her and my wife, they get along great," Stegall said.

He also refused to talk about the Grey Cup game, which ended when backup quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie threw a last-minute interception that snuffed out a possible winning drive.

"I can't remember how I felt yesterday, let alone ... when was the game, on Sunday?" he said.

Stegall broke the CFL record for all-time TDs (137) in July and finished the season with 144 career TDs. He's also 196 yards off Allen Pitts' all-time CFL receiving yardage record of 14,891.

Meanwhile, the Bombers now have the CFL's longest Grey Cup active drought, with their last title coming in 1990.

Berry guided the squad to a 10-7-1 regular-season record in his second year at the helm.

"I think that we are now an entity where we come on the field to play and we're no longer taken for granted," Berry said.

One player he said he'll invite back to training camp is kicker Troy Westwood, who missed six games in his 17th season because of being benched or injured, but was solid in the playoffs doing the field-goal kicking and punting in place of injured Rob Pikula and Pat Fleming.
The 2008 season can't come fast enough for quarterback Kevin Glenn, who broke his non-throwing left arm between his shoulder and elbow in the East Division final against Toronto.

"(The injury) probably will give me more motivation to try to get back to the Grey Cup and this time get a chance to play in it," said Glenn, who had a career- and league-high 5,114 passing yards this season.

"We had a good season so you want to savour it. Next year, we'll just build onto it. We want to become one of those teams that continuously goes to the Grey Cup."

The Bombers have eight free agents: defensive lineman Tom Canada, offensive linemen Matt Sheridan and Dan Goodspeed, receiver Jamie Stoddard, safety Greg Bearman, linebackers Neil McKinlay and Adrian Baird and Dinwiddie.

Canada said he's spending the off-season as a white-water rafting guide in Honduras and he'll let his agent handle his future.

"I love Winnipeg, I love what we did this year, but right now my focus is on rafting," Canada said.

Dinwiddie said he'll probably spend part of the off-season reliving the Grey Cup game, which was his first pro start that included three interceptions and one fumble.

"I'll keep pushing myself to be a starter in this league," he said. "I got my feet wet and I think that I proved to some people around the league that I can play."

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced Thursday that Milt Stegall will be back for another season with the club.

The Canadian Football League's all-time touchdown leader will play in his 14th season this year, amid rumours that he was contemplating retirement after the 2007 season.

"I want to thank the Bombers for allowing me this much time in making my decision," Stegall said in a conference call on Thursday. "There were some other things that came about, one being some business opportunities. Secondly, one that trumped everything, my wife is pregnant right now."
Stegall said they plan to have the baby in Winnipeg this summer, but his focus will also be getting the Bombers back to a championship.

"I think we've got a great chance at winning the Grey Cup," he said. "Coach (Doug) Berry and everybody there have put together a great atmosphere and a great team and I want to be a part of that."

Although exact financial details were not released, it is believed Stegall will make under $200,000 this year. He made $250,000 last season.
Stegall said he did talk to teammates past and present in making his decision, including Harold Nash, Maurice Kelly and current Bomber Terrence Edwards.

"He's been over to my house a bunch, buggin' me," he joked.

He added that he spoke to Kevin Glenn about once a week, but his quarterback never pushed the subject. "He didn't put any pressure on me because he understood my situation with my family and my business," Stegall said, noting that Glenn did express a desire "to have him back."
"From his football ability to his personality, his character on and off the field, I think it's a good fit for the team," Glenn told the Canadian Press. "Just to be around him, he brings a lot of enthusiasm and excitement to the locker-room and the team and everything - I just want to be the quarterback that gets him to that Cup and try to win the Cup."

Stegall also talked to Ryan Dinwiddie, who said he'd love to try for the Grey Cup again with Stegall, and that meant a lot to the veteran receiver.
Stegall has been one of the league's most celebrated players since his arrival in Winnipeg in 1995. He broke Allen Pitts' CFL all-time record of 117 touchdown receptions in 2005, and George Reed and Mike Pringle's all-time record of 137 last July to finish with 144 career touchdowns. Stegall racked up 1,108 yards in 2007 - his ninth consecutive 1,000-yard season - and has a total 14,645 yards.

Stegall, voted one of the CFL's Top 50 players (No. 15) by TSN in 2006, holds league records that also include most touchdowns in a season (23 in 2002) and most touchdown receptions in one season (23 in 2002).
He helped guide the Blue Bombers to the Grey Cup game in 2001 and 2007.

Stegall has earned several CFL honours over his career. He was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Player in 2001 and earned the Tom Pate Award for outstanding contributions to the league, the team and the community last season.

BOMBERS STEGALL BECOMES ALL-TIME RECEIVING YARDS LEADER

TORONTO - Milt Stegall became the most prolific receiver in CFL history in style Friday night.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers veteran slotback caught a 92-yard pass at 9:02 in the second quarter to boost his career total to 14,983, breaking the mark of 14,891 yards previously held by former Calgary Stampeders star Allen Pitts.

Stegall took a pass from Kevin Glenn over the middle and split the Argos defence to go the distance for a touchdown - his second of the game. It put the Bombers ahead 28-3.

Stegall's accomplishment was then announced over the public address system at Rogers Centre, illiciting a nice round of applause from fans in attendance. However, there was no on-field ceremony and play continued on with the Bombers booting the convert at 9:19 of the second.
Stegall tied Pitts' mark with a 16-yard touchdown catch at 6:19 of the quarter, his first catch of the game, to put Winnipeg ahead 21-3.

The 14-year CFL veteran is already the CFL's all-time leader in touchdowns (146) and receiving TDs (143). The 38-year-old broke Pitts' record in his 174th career game, two less than the former Stampeder.
Stegall also holds the league mark for most touchdowns and TD catches in a season (23, in 2002) and has amassed nine straight 1,000-yard seasons. But that streak is in serious jeopardy as Stegall, who missed the first five games of the '08 season while recovering from off-season knee surgery, has just 13 catches for 180 yards with no touchdowns.

Stegal says hockey players are not athletes and that he would fight any hockey player.
Sure Stegal have fun against Laraque, Brashear, Cote, Godard, just to name a few that would kick his ass.

50% of the pussy ass Swedes in the NHL would kick Stegal's ass. He plays in a farm team league because he isn't among the best pro footballers in the world. The lowest paid guy in the NHL makes more money than him. Too bad the Peg doesn't have an NHL team anymore or he'd be gooned lickity.

Are you kidding? His blurb has been on every Canadian sports channel for the last 3 days. He compares hockey to figure skating and darts.

You are either joking or spend way too much time on the internet. What do you think these guys on this Sportsnet forum are talking about anyhow?

Milt Stegall's era has come to an end in Winnipeg.

The Globe and Mail's Dave Naylor confirmed reports on Friday that Stegall has informed the Blue Bombers he won't be back with the club in 2009. Instead, he will retire and end a brilliant 14-year career that was spent entirely in the Manitoba capital.

Winnipeg head coach Mike Kelly did not immediately return a telephone message from The Canadian Press.

Stegall is expected to attend a banquet in Winnipeg later this month, at which time the slotback would formally announce his retirement.

Stegall's decision to hang up his cleats doesn't come as a surprise. The married father of two young sons has mulled over retirement the past few years, opting to take each campaign on a year-to-year basis.

He decided to play last year despite having off-season knee surgery that forced him to miss training camp and the start of the season. But the six-foot, 189-pound Stegall was hampered by injuries for much of last year, recording just 30 catches for 470 yards and three touchdowns. The 30 catches and three TD receptions were both career lows and the 470 receiving yards broke Stegall's streak of nine straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons.

Stegall, a Cincinnati native who turned 39 on Jan. 25, leaves the CFL widely considered its greatest receiver ever. He has 855 career catches for 15,165 yards and 144 touchdowns. He leaves as the league's career leader in touchdown grabs, receiving yards as well as career TDs (147).

He also holds the CFL record for most touchdowns in a season (23 in 2002) and yards per catch in a season (26.5-yard average in `97).

Stegall also holds the Bombers club mark for most 1,000-yard receiving seasons with 10 and was named the CFL's outstanding player in 2002 when he established career highs with 105 catches for 1,862 yards and 23 touchdowns.

He also combined with former quarterback Khari Jones as the top passing tandem in CFL history and was voted at No. 15 in TSN's Top-50 CFL players poll.

On Aug. 24, 2007, Stegall received the key to the City of Winnipeg and was also honoured with a street named after him. The one next to Canad Inns Stadium - the Bombers home field - that was formerly called Arena Road after the former Winnipeg Arena, was renamed Milt Stegall Drive.

Stegall is also one of the league's most popular players with reporters because of his often colourful quotes.

His most popular one is: ''There's only six guarantees in this world. Death, taxes, trouble, Milt Stegall being on time, Milt Stegall being pretty and Milt Stegall being in tip-top shape.''

The only accomplishment to elude Stegall was playing for a Grey Cup-winning team. He participated in the game twice with Winnipeg - 2001 against Calgary and '07 versus Saskatchewan - but the Bombers were unable to secure a title win in either contest.

Stegall began his pro football career in 1992 with the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals. He made the team as an undrafted free agent out of Miami University, playing in 21 games over three seasons. He saw action mostly on special teams returning kickoffs. He joined the Green Bay packers as a free agent in '95 but was released and ultimately found his way north to Winnipeg.

Notes: The Montreal Alouettes have a new receivers coach and it just happens to be backup quarterback Marcus Brady. He takes over for Jamie Elizondo, who left the CFL club to join the coaching staff at Syracuse University. What's even more bizarre is Brady has no intention of retiring as a player, meaning he'll suit up on game day and serve as a backup to veteran Anthony Calvillo, who becomes a free agent Feb. 16 but is expected to re-sign with the Als.
