View Full Version : Quebec residents: The PQ...
just curious as to how the quebecois here view the PQ party? Do you guys plan on voting for them? Do you think its right for a one-province party to be running for the role of leader of the entire country? How are they generally viewed by the public out your way?
Havent been out to Quebec yet, genuinely curious as to the political state out there.

Quick correction. PQ is our provincial gov't. BLOC is our federal. You are talking of the BLOC NOW.
From my take of living my whole 36 years in this province.
Most non (pure laine) quebocois will not vote BLOC. Though some do. Most immigrants never or rarely vote bloc. English decendants are strongly opposed to them.
In essence, most of us that would have more of our fundamental rights violated, would never vote the BLOC nor PQ. The pure laine will mostly vote them as they are the leaders of the party. Liberals have always been strong here but lost ground bigtime this time round.
This is a topic I feel rather strongly about since I am a decenant of italian immigrants though born and raised here. My kind went through the quiet revolution caught in the middle of the french/english fight and it affected our lives and those of our children. There is alot of history about stupid language here. If you turn on a french news station, 9 times out of 10 you'll have some debate how Canada is screwing us or something about language issues. Meh...
Well, the BQ is well aware that it will never run the country. The best it can hope for is to be the opposition. The point is only to have a voice for quebec at the national level. That was great for quebec back in the days when the province was undermined by the rest of Canada, but some haven't realized that it isn't the case anymore. Some still hang on to the idea of leaving the confederation, but that is not a viable option on so many different levels I won't even start... Most quebecers are separatist at one point of their lives, I was, and that's how the party gets most of its votes. But since that doesn't last for most people, the party is slowly losing terrain. The next elections could prove me wrong, but as far as I know, the conservatives have been pretty well received in quebec during the last mandate. That being said, I don't want people to think I'm against the party, I just think their ideas are a little too left for current situation.

And for the french quebecois here, some of my good friends are french quebecois. I have nothing against french. I just want to make it totally clear in case this threads gets heated up. As most political debates do :D
I beg your pardon, i did mean the Bloc, thanks for the correction!

The Bloc always does well in debates on TV or other media because Gilles Duceppe does not have to develop or formulate an ideology like other parties. The only thing the BQ has to do is say "I will do what's right for Quebec". What they don't realize that sometimes what is "right" for Quebec entails screwing over the rest of Canada, or anglophones in Quebec.
Seth is correct how people will flirt with separatism during their youth, but I think the charade of the BQ and PQ is still going to continue for a few more years. The BQ has a way of being rescued from disaster with scandals or Harper attacking the arts.
The longer the BQ and PQ exist Quebec will not be able to face its real problems such as high debt, high spending, low economic growth, and corruption.
The taxes here are so high (I'll be paying around 44% in a couple of years from now, which is around 10% more than other provinces). That is outrageous, considering where that money goes. I'm all about helping the less fortunate, not helping the lazy(people on social aid because they don't want to work) and imbeciles(hypochondriacs and self-induced "sick" people engulfing the hospitals).

Biggest thing that drives me wild is Quebec Hydro. The company has no competition so it is inefficient with its mega projects, but the fact that hydro is sold below market value is the dumbest idea. Let people pay market value for their hydro so they start to conserve it more. Quebecers are the most energy inefficient people in Canada.
Cut your taxes so you can people who consume more pay more.
The one thing drives me wild in Quebec is how much people complain. They want tons of services but low taxes. Apparently $7 a day for childcare costs too much, but taxes are too high. University tuiton, $2500 a year is way too much and not affordable. BS. Queens charges over $8k for BComms after the first year.
Honest people get ****ed because they pay their taxes while plumbers work under the table getting cash and collecting welfare.
