Man, I can't believe how expensive protein powders are now. I stopped buying it for a while, so I was shocked to see most brands I was familiar with are at least $15 more than they used to be.

Anyone know a good shop in Toronto that has great deals on protein mix?

I order online. Sndcanada.com for example is not bad.

I was given a tub of this stuff, but the price isn't bad either $85 for 10 pounds.

Any reason it's so cheap? Ultimate Nutrition Whey Sensation 81?

SND is actually where I buy my mix from... going in there, I was very disappointed to see ON discontinued their Natural mix.. had all natural ingredients. I'm not a fan of the artificial sweeteners.. it was the best tasting vanilla mix I've ever had. Was one of the cheapest too at around $40 for 5lbs.

$85 for 10lbs seems like a good deal though! I paid almost $60 for 5lbs. How do you like it? Looks good with concentrate and isolate in there.

With this melamine bullshit going on with China... I wish there was a way of verifying where the protein in these products comes from.

I've never seen anything like that. How on earth do you customize your protein? There are so many options and I don't know what to choose for half of them.

I'm not sure whey has yet to come from china, and would YOU buy it?

I'm 99% sure no whey is made in Canada. I might be wrong but Aussie/New Zealand, US and Ireland are a lot of places whey is made. Canada is stuck (and screwed over) with our soviet style dairy marketing boards. Canadians actually pay the highest price for milk in the G8!!!!!!! Ever priced out foreign made cheese? There is a 100% tariff on imported dairy products (milk & cheese) essentially doubling their price.

Thanks for the link man. That's a great lookin lineup there.. I like that you can customize formulas, though there is a lot to choose from.

25lbs plain is a great deal for $119. I just might have to order some of the next paycheque.

Australian regulators said that while no milk products from China had been imported, candies and other foods would need more testing.

Still chocolate eclairs (made in HK) had melamine in them!!! horrors! i loved those as a kid.

Word was when price of whey went up it was because of the Chinese. Apparently because whey was so popular in america the population in China was demanding it so they bought a shit load and drove the price up. Physique would have the real skinny on this I would think.

umm are you joking or serious?

Reason whey went up was the same reason all other food stuffs have increased in price. higher input costs. plus the weaker US dollar made imports to the US expensive and since a lot of our products come from the US....

i can tell you for sure, the big companies that have protein on the market DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM CHINA! most buy from New Zealand or the USA.

only companies that probably buy from china, are your house brands. like london drugs, shoppers drug mart, superstore. those super cheap 2lb containers that taste like shit you see in your local department stores. these guys realize how big the fitness market is and cut corners all the time, hence why the products are so cheap.

as for why whey went up in price. it was a combination of things. here though is the jist

The raw material cost for protein (whey proteins, caseinates, milk proteins) has been rising steadily over the past year, with a cumulative cost increase in 2006 of more than 30%. February costs rose even further by another 20%, and last month, they went up again by another 30%. Forecasts from all raw material suppliers in North America, New Zealand/Australia and Europe are that prices show no signs of declining in the near future. Therefore we are compelled to raise our prices on all protein powders by 10% effective Sept 30th/07.

The cost increases are a result of worldwide market conditions:

1. Milk shortages caused by drought-like conditions in key milk producing regions in North America, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe, depleting supply of whey;
2. Reduction in volume of cheese manufacturing (whey protein is made from filtering liquids derived from cheese manufacturing)
3. Record prices being offered for dairy proteins by the agricultural feed industry.
4. Supplies of whey being further bought up by Europe and Asia, as their own supplies have been outstripped.

These 4 main factors result now in a shortage of all dairy proteins, including whey protein, and thus a rise in price from all suppliers around the world- just like other commodities such as milk, gasoline, or oil rise in price and the demand outstrips the supply. All this has lead to every raw material dairy and whey supplier in the world raising prices whether contracts were in place or not.

lol, now THAT'S cheap!

thanks for the explanation physique.. i was wondering why the increase.. it's a shame. the products still seem overpriced. but they had to increase from the price they already were at, so i guess that's that.

Physique is the guy I buy supps from, call it loyalty, but I can be sure I'll get whatever I order and he always communicates. He is loyal to his customers, and to me that is very important.

Trueprotein didn't work out so well for me. Even their cheapest stuff 20LBS for $100, tack on $38 shipping, and it's shipped UPS too, and we know how that goes...

I just get 20LBS from SND w/ free shipping and it comes Canada Post within 2 days, with flavor too, for only a few bucks more.

Just a side note on whey protein that will make you cry.
There was a small cheese plant operating in our area in '70s and '80s. Whey was considered a waste byproduct of the cheese production. A minimum of 6000 gallons of whey was dumped in a nearby swamp, DAILY. That just hurts.
