View Full Version : New computer
I'm wanting to buy a new computer. What's good out there and is there anything worth waiting for?
I drop drop a grand on this. I want something good.
Will the 64 bit cpu's become the norm as they don't seem to be really catching on imo.
It depends what you do with it. If you just watch movies and use word, just go with a core2duo(low clock speed, like 1.6-2ghz), 1gig of ram(2 if you want vista, ddr2 preferably), 250gig+ hard drive, a basic video card and the sweetest monitor you can find. On the other hand, if you rip dvds, do video editing, play games or have some money to waste, get a quad core, 4gig ram, and a kickass video card.
Most computers are overpowered for the average user. Any 6-700$ish computer at best buy should do. If you're not in a hurry, keep checking the futureshop website until a refurbished shows up, you can get sweet deals that way.
As for the 64 bits cpu. I'm personally running one because I fall in the money to waste/gamer category. It's obviously more performant, but I wouldn't advise it for the average user since to get the full potential out, you need to run the x86 version of windows which makes finding drivers a real pain in the ass and makes some application unusable

Zeone is an expert on this topic. But I think something sweet in terms of new technology is around the corner so maybe wait a little.
As for laptops, in today's future shop specials, they have laptops with the new centrino 2 processors in it and they stated it's a clearance sale. Hmmmmm.....

Most definitely. The new core i7 architecture from Intel is just around the corner. Although the first wave of CPUs will be more expensive (and faster) than the ones coming early next year.

1,000$ is your budget? You can get something decent for that price, but not a high-end station.

All the new desktop CPUs from both Intel (EM64T) and AMD (AMD64) support 64 bits, so don't concern yourself with it. You will get it as part of the offering. Of course, you will need a 64bits OS in order to enable that functionality.

I wouldn't get anything less than a quad core right now. I believe they are phasing the core 2 duo's out now.

Just did a quick research on the new chips coming out. Seems laptops will start shipping with the new Centrino 2 VPRO soon. Maybe that's why they are calling it a clearance.
