My wife just wandered downstairs in the middle of my last set of squats.
Apparently I"m not allowed to do them anymore because I turn purple.

I told her "but I'm doing squats" and she replied "you don't have to do that to get strong."

What am I to do?

hahhaahahah, sigh.

For those of you who breath during reps on squats try the following experiment...

a) Take what you consider a heavy weight and hold it over your head.
b) Breath out
c) ... there is no c)

Note I am not responsible for anyone silly enough to try this.

now do a little research on vasalva.

I'm perfectly happy to breath between reps but on the way up I much prefer as stable a core as I can get when squatting.

I thought the wife part of the story was the more interesting part. She showed up in the last two reps of my last set. lol.

I squat over 400 for reps and I have always breathed in on the eccentric and out on the concentric. I get what you are saying with vasalva, but there is alot of evidence about increased thoracic pressure causing heart hypertrophy.
Personally I breath so my wife doesn't tell me I can't do squats cause my face ain't purple.

I'm only at 280 (3x5) at the moment but I'm doing Starting Strength and the weight is still going up about 20 pounds a week. It was 30 but it's starting to get heavy and some days it's hard to drink enough milk. I'm really enjoying the ability to throw up PR's every workout and will miss it when it's over.

Next you'll be telling me I should wear a belt.

Are you sure you aren't my wife?

Same boat here to an extent... repping well over 400 for multiple sets and hold breath initially once I bottom out but as I start to move up I exhale through the rep. 280 is pretty light to be holding it all the way through. You'll pass out once you hitt he 400 mark ;)

Oh and enjoy the 20lb incremental gains while you can. They certainly do not last long ;)

I wear a belt. What's wrong with a belt? I have a bad back from sports and a fall down icery stairs as a kid. Only so much you can do to strenghten it and every once in a while it acts up so I'd rather squat than not squat therefore I belt up when I need to.

Wearing a belt doesn't make you a pussy unless you do it for everything but heavy squats, deads or OH Presses.

If I hold my breath till I hit the 400 mark my wife won't be married. 3 is coming real soon now but I'm pretty darn sure I won't squeeze out the next 90 pounds with before I have to switch to an intermediate program. 5 pound increase are coming soon.

Nothing is wrong with always wearing a belt, Arnold wore a belt for everything. Thats probably why his waist was so damn small in comparison to everything else.

Best post of the century. :sexy

IMO you wear a belt when you absolutley have to . For me it is with reps under 6 . Before I buggered my ankle up (my balance is off a little when squatting) I was still sans belt with 425 for 6 squatting conventionally. Now I belt up at 365 until things get better.

I have read that some pros wear belts not for the support factorso much but to keep abdominals from over expanding and stretching the fascia during intense training. Theory was this was adding to the distended abdominals that we hear so much about.

Pros are full of shit. Funny how guys like Casey Viator , Franco and Bertil Fox all trained as heavy as today's pros but never had huge gh guts. I hate it when these guys blame heavy lifting or food intake on their gh guts . Sure guys , we believe you.

When your chest or upper body is the size of Arnold`s your waist will look small! I just don`t buy into the fact his waist looked the way it did because he wore a belt.

LOL. You can't be serious pal . My father is a ****ing doctor and I have run this by him . Your stomach does not protrude because of food intake. Fat people have massive guts because they are fat. Pro bbers have massive guts because of GH abuse , NOT because of food intake. Find me a study that says you can expand your abdominal muscles through food intake . Can't happen .Does it make any sense to you that they have distended bellies when they are on stage despite the fact they haven't been eating 6,000+ cals a day for months before the show ? I guess they are distended because they are starving themselves like some kid in Nigeria. or the massive food intake from 3 months previous still has their stomachs engorged . Ever see the diets that Arnold and those guys use to employ ? Those guys ate massive amounts of food. The diets of the pros in the Gh era aren't that different from those before. Whenever a pro gets negative attention for his gut he either blames lifting too heavy or his diet. Bullshit. Others lifted as heavy or ate as much 30 years ago. Whenever a pro gains 20 lbs in a year it's because he went back to eating more and lifting heavier , lol . Yeah , like he wouldn't have done this already.
Common sense.

Very smart observations especially noticing they`re not eating huge amounts of food months before the show, so why the distention?

And the last part... like he wouldn`t have done this already... No shit huh???

Isn't it because their organs are suffering from overgrowth? I heard HGH abuse causes the organs to grow... perhaps all of their insides are growing right along with their muscles making it impossible to keep it all in.

So the purpose of using this HGH is to get ripped. However the manner the pros use it, it does just the opposite making the area we want the leanest, distended finding it ironic in a sense. Now I understand in the world of Pro bodybuilding HGH is a must but and there is synergy with GH and the other drugs. But when the stomach is distended it should give people the sign to cut back.

Growth Hormone and Human Growth Hormone are both the same thing. AFAIK we cannot make use of bovine, equine or porcine growth hormones. Also once the distension occurs the only way to shrink it is by resecting the internal organs back to original size.
