There were 2 roomates, and one was home all the time, so they used about 80% of the utilities, while the other was always gone, so they hardly used any of the utilities. But the way they split the bill is that the one who is always gone pays 60% of the utilities, while the other one only pays 40%?

Does this make any sense?

What was his/her justification for this reasoning? Do they work?

when i had roomies, we split the bills 50/50 reagrdless if they where never home or not.
only thing we didnt split was the long distance calls.

that or just charge 1 flat fee for the rent and include the utilities as part of that rent.

This is a hypothetical situation, but let's say it's because they (the one that only pays 40%) have more personal expenses.

Yes this is what would seem to be the fair thing to do.

Anybody else have an opinion? Com'on guys, I am going somewhere with this.

50/50 regardless of who is home when. That solves all problems.

Cause in the future, situations might change and the 50/50 thing works best in most.

ya 50/50 for sure, if hes never there why would he have to pay 60% of utilities it should be the other way around at least.

so i'm curious were are you going with this ?

Ok, so here's the thing. Most people agree that it's not fair for the person who uses less utilities to have to pay more for them.

So then, why is it ok that people with kids get a tax break, when they use more of the government services that are paid for by those taxes (public schooling, medicare, etc..) than single people with no kids?

They use more, but pay less??

50/50 no matter what, really think of it, how much extra hydro will be used?? Lots of rommates are never home, but thats the most fair i belive. then no argurements. but if you can keep track of long distance calls, then that's only thing i'd watch is phone..

Answer is because we need to promote having kids or renew our population from immigration. The whole immigration problem is cause we don't have enough kids here.

Gov't gives a bunch of benefits to those who have kids and most of us are ok with that.

lol Common sense. 50/50 If not your going to be getting in argument all time. You knew the situation before you moved and should have agreed ed as what rent or whatever is going to be. So what winter is coming.....heat 50% of the house and hope some the heat doesn't rise to the other tenants. Turn the fridge off and on. Food needs to be kept cold. It's impossible to figure out who is using what especially when there is #3 tenants.

I understand the REASON behind it, I just don't think it's fair to single people that's all. When you think about it, it's exactly the same as my example of the 2 roomates, and everyone agreed that 50/50 is the proper way to split the bill.

It is not the same as your hypothetical example. It is obvious you do not have kids. Talk to someone who does have kids and works hard, makes the same money as you, pays in the same amount of taxes as you and oh here is some more taxes for you as a parent with a child in school! The government is saying hey we get it! It is expensive to have kids in this country and give them a proper education so we are willing to give you a little break to say thanks for creating more tax payers for this country.
I think you need to investigate what the tax break is and how it woks out in the wash cause you will find there are no real financial or tax advantages to having kids. this is not the reason people have kids, in most cases.

It's exactly the same. The roomate that stays home and uses most of the utilities but pays less is the taxpayer with kids, while the other one that uses less utilities, but pays more is the taxpayer without kids. Exactly the same.

Everybody pretty much agreed that the bills should be split 50/50 with the 2 roommates. Now what if one roommate had a child, does this mean they get a discount on the bills?

Roomates are not placed as important as having kids in the bigger scale of things. We need people to have kids. The country will survive and flourish without roomates. But without kids, it all comes down to immigration and Canada will not be Canada as we know it in 50 years.

lol...i had 2 girl roomates in college. I ****ed them both. It's great when you live with girls. You get to wait until they are at their weakest and then you go in for the score. Living with a girl gives you that advantage. They have no choice but to be around you all day. If they feel horny, you're the first guy available. Give em booze and the legs open. Sigh, I miss those days.

Fairness is only in the eye of the beholder. If they agreed and are both satisfied with the 60/40 split, who are we to judge :)
