Alright, I've heard this a second time now here in Quebec. People are telling me they were told that they weren't allowing pictures to be taken by the audience at the nationals. I was told that some woman actually came on stage stating it to everyone.
My question now. Is this allowed. Obviously it's about money but since this is a federation and is regulated by rules above the interest of one promoter, is this against the rules or is it ok? Does anyone know the answer to this as I came close to paying a pretty penny to have a pro go do a shoot for me of everyone there and the show.
Can you imagine flying from BC to go see your partner on stage and you can't even take a pic. Sounds a little retarded to me but I would really like to know if it's allowed or not.

well i wish i knew, i think i should..lol, since i take the odd pic.... HERES WHAT I THINK.....
IF ANY OF THE PHOTOGRAPHERS PAID TO BE THE "OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER" AT THE EVENT, THEN GROUNDS TO ASK ME TO STOP WOULD BE THERE...i think
but, they acted as tho we were at a movie and the competitors were copywrited and no one was allowed to take photos.....
also, for it to even be "legal" (i think) it HAD to be printed on the ticket stub, "absolutely no cameras allowed"
OH YEAH, no mention on his website that this wasnt allowed....wonder why??? NO ONE WOULD OF COME MAYBE???
weird thing was, people carried them in, around there neck, not hiding it, and the girls is like "no taking pictures".....now i figured this was just lip service so they could tell the REAL photographers, "we tried"...but oh no!!!, she was running around telling people to put the cameras away....she was pretty much ignored for the most part...and no one came and escorting anyone away,,, i think jOE SPIGETTIO, was trying to intimidate and scare tactics into not taking pics...
like you said, total bullshit, fly to see a loved one then cant take a picture???
I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS FOR BODYBUILDING SHOW!!!!
i wonder if you could put a lawsuit in for illegaly being with held from doing something.....THAT WOULD BE AWESOME

Wow, what a POS.
I've never really followed the bodybuilding scene much but all I ever see on bb boards are complaints at how cheap and greasy these promoters are.
?Some chick is rubbing tanning cream on you and some guy is telling you that he wants a cut. Should have told him that you'll save the ass for him to rub cream on.. thats his cut.
It must be pure scumbags running these events.

i paid 240.00 for 2 classes, my family flies up to see me. i dont make top 5 paid 100 for pics and there wont be many because iwas only out for a few mandatory shots.my family cant take pics and only saw me for like 2 mins on stage.theres no help for dream tan so my firiend has to miss alot of show to help me.and also to get trasiners pass you have to buy ticket for the show.money greed.my friend (rrrroolllla)ended up helping 3 guys.surprise he wasnt asked to buy 3 tickets.you would think competitors would get some type of sovenirs ie t shirt or poster or something for a 120 entry fee. didnt get water til someone complained.show was great experience but i hate to see money being fleeced every where you turn.

im also dying to know .ordered pizza from hotel, they didnt cut it , called back to complain they say they dont cut pizza in quebec.is this true or would this guy not admit he ****ed up,bit off topic but part of bizzare weekend, ending with porn on tv in macdonalds, thought i was too dehydrated til rrrolllla saw it too
BDD, that story is shameful, and Im being generous... I would be embarrassed if I were that promoter... Im even a little embarrassed for you having your family there for such a short appearance...
This sounds like complete bullshit to me... I would be getting in touch with other competitors you guys know werent satisfied and writing a group letter to the CBBF... if this is the kind of operation they feel proud about running, maybe the threat of losing 20-30 competitors and the tickets sales that go along with them might cause them to smarten up...

email i just sent
hi Mark, my name is Cory...i have a question or two, and you may very well get alot more emails
I attended the show this past weekend, spent $230 on tickets, $100 on gas, and $311 on hotel, to find out when i get to the show, i CANNOT TAKE PICTURES OF MY FRIEND....which is why i came. Talking to other mothers and fathers, some that travelled from BC and PEI, only to be told NO CAMERAS......was utter dissapointment.....how many people would of actually attended had such info been privided on the website??? im thinking alot less....WHICH IS WHY IT WASNT.....just blind side everyone at the show..
is this ACTUALLY CBBF policy, or Joe Spinelli money grab????? because i can tell you there were a lot of dissapointed people.... this was actually a disgrace to Canadian bodybuilding...
a group of 9, went to see our friend/son /brother....and when we got there, Joe made our group buy another ticked for a 12 month old baby to sit on a lap!!!!, when my friend talked to Joe b4 hand, he said not a problem, as long as she is on a lap.......only to change his tune when they arrive....FROM BOSTON by the way!
anyway, thats it for now...i suspect you MAY have many more like this....

Dear Cory:
Was not in attendance, as waiting for major neck surgery, have been restricted in travel by neurosurgeons.
I do know that we restrict professional photographers, however at some event centres they have restrictions on camera usage, which at times has caused even the CBBF to have issues with event centres.
I have known Joe Spinello for years and I can vouch for him on any issue, though again as not at event I do not have anything to base your comments on.
will communicate with Joe and provide your email to him.
Thank you for your email inquiry, did the athlete(s) you came to watch perform as you expected?

I read about the no camera thing on another site. I am really glad I didn't go half the reason I go to contest I am not in is to take pictures and support my friends that are competing. I would suspect this is not a CBBF policy but rather the promoter being an ass. Good letter phats I hope you get a decent reply at the very least it might change things for next year.

From a legal standpoint the promoter of a show cannot limit "non-professional" photography unless the competitors have signed an agreement that all footage is the property of the promoter.
I think this is shameful and a disgrace to the sport which we all try so hard to promote. The numbers that come to buy tickets and attend shows are there to support the athlete as family and friends.

This whole situation is a crock of shit and it's a damn shame that all the time, energy, and hard work put into this by the athlete and their families and they won't even recognize it by letting them take pictures. Disrespectful to say the least.
Phats, careful with this one, try it keep it all in email and to avoid calling him so you have a paper trail. Another heads up, not to be a bitch or seem like the language maybe try to use proper punctuation, caps, full words to help get your point across and be taken seriously... especially if these letters eventually get read by the higher ups.

email him back phats, and tell him everything you and others have said in this thread.

as i agree with the rest of you in this thread. competitors are treated like crap for the most part by many promoters in this sport.

Go for it phats. Can't hurt any to call him. We'd all be interested in what he has to say. Or you can ask him to come over and make a post to explain it to us all. We're all adults here and can rationalize like one. Maybe he has a very valid reason that we have no clue about.

in joes defence i also heard it was a venue policy and not his policy. I dont know if this is true or not but i have seen it in other venues. but i do agree it really sucks for the athletes competing. As for the protan issue if thats true then thats really lame. ive met Joe a few times and he seems like a nice enough guy and does bust his ass to put these shows on so ill give him the benefit of the doubt. However i find it really unfair that athletes have to pay all there own expenses for a competition like this and then have to pay for pictures of themselves competing.

That's good to know. So unless the competitors sign some kind of contractual release, audience members can take pics? And phatkid makes a good point, if it's a venue policy then one would think a 'professional' would be out as well? I know for my provincials, there's a vid made but I'm pretty sure not many (if anyone) really goes to that much effort to make a recording. Bad enough the competitors put so much into competing and get so little back (even those who win).

I did 2 shows in a row and Joe was not the promoter at these 2 shows..and it was the same shit.....Please relax on Joe's.....he is a very very very well respected on the international scene.....and our best promotor period........he always do the best show here.......i know the guy and he love his sport......just to let everyone know....at montreal pro classic where Fouad performs last year.......Joe lost around 25000$ and had to paid from his pocket.....all this work for loosing that amount....i understand now why he play safe.....And people talk a bit too much saying they go there just to take pics of their friend COME ON you go there to cheers for them and see them perform......i was there i paid for 2 person for pre judge and final.....and i just loved the show.....
but i can understand the picture issue ....but i think its taking a too big proportion...
my opinion.....

Hi Nick, you make a good point. I know it's hard to make money for shows like this. It would be nice to hear Joe's take on this. I never met him but if he's been at this for this long, I'm sure he loves the sport as much as all of us. Hats off to him for being reliable at getting the shows done. But the picture issue has really just started this year I believe. It would be nice hear his take on it or any other promoter as to why this is the case. Money is just not valid enough for not being able to take pictures of your brother, girlfriend, wife, husband etc. They paid to be there and worked hard for many months to get in that condition.

like i said again ii totally agree on all that picture issue......you are all 100% right my family and gf was so mad that they couldnt take pics of me while on stage......BUT i think some people like to bash hard on the wrong person.....just to let you all know the official photographer is part of the direction of the fcpaq.....and they dont allow any other photographer at any regional show....but to dont look like an ass they let Gary Bartlett for the provincial and national......so people guess who is the ass in this story........

im dont think the no pic policy pits money in joes pocket,or wouldnt seem.with not much assistance back stage i dont like the idea of trainer having to buy a ticket to the show,i paid 240 bucks that should cover a trainer.luckily my trainer was already paid to watch show.they do like to squeeze you for money. gotta give props to my federation, nbpfa gave me 400.00 for competing which is great.

One of the reasons they said at my last show for not allowing cameras was that the pics end up on the net without people's permission. The next thing you know, you have people picking appart their physiques in non constuctive, mean ways. Some people that have never even stepped on stage manage to say some pretty ignorant things about competitors that worked their butts off. Who knows if money also impacts this new "policy".

Well, the show was a great experience for me, and I didnt mind at all coming backstage to help with dreamtan, but it is a huge surprise that with the amount of money these competitors PAY, they cant even provide a few dreamtan people. Last Nats they had people backstage to do this and I hear it went really well. Forcing competitors to buy tickets is outright rediculous! BDD had no f-ing idea how long he would be stuck backstage, and as it turned out, he was pretty well done at the half-way mark. Fortunately, we had an extra ticket he could use to enter the venue and sit and watch the rest of the show. The caliber of competitors was absolutely jaw-dropping, I was really surprised at how poorly they were treated. Local shows make no where near as much money but treat their athletes far better.
