Hey everyone, just wanted to warn you all about a serious food poisoning. DO NOT EAT processed meats, I repeat, do not eat any processed meats. Turns out a large food processing plant north of Toronto is infected with lysteria, a serious health concern for us all. 4 people have died so far.

You can read up more here: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601082&sid=a_7vFH4rliVo&refer=canada

I'll keep posting as more info comes in. Be safe all.

Looks like a great number of different companies used that plant to process their foods, for example: Pizza Nova pepperoni is from that plant and is under recall notice.

just saw the commercial today of the CEO or whoever apologizing for the related illnesses and deaths. Its pretty crazy how it can effect so many people. I was told if you do catch the disease there is a 60% mortality rate :S

What is listeriosis?

Listeriosis is a food-borne illness, known commonly as food poisoning. It occurs when a person eats food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. The bacteria are found in the environment and can contaminate meats and other foods.

What are the symptoms of listeriosis?

A person with listeriosis can experience symptoms like vomiting, nausea, cramps, diarrhea, constipation, severe headache and fever. These symptoms may last for seven to 10 days. Although most people don't require treatment, it's important to drink lots of fluids to avoid dehydration.

How long does it take symptoms to appear?

People who eat food contaminated with listeria usually develop symptoms in two to 30 days, but it can take as long as 70 days, making it very difficult to pinpoint the source of infection. Those who experience symptoms should contact their health care provider immediately.

Who is most at risk?

While most healthy people can fight off bacterial infections, others are more at risk, including pregnant or nursing women, babies, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems such as cancer patients. These people have more chances of developing a life-threatening brain infection and blood poisoning. At risk, vulnerable people may be prescribed antibiotics.

What are the specific risks for pregnant women?

Though pregnant women may only experience mild, flu-like symptoms, listeriosis can cause a miscarriage during the first three months of pregnancy. A woman who develops listeriosis later in her pregnancy risks giving birth to a stillborn or acutely ill baby.

How can I protect my family and myself?

Do not consume any Maple Leaf Foods products with the code 97B. The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends keeping refrigerator temperatures at 4 degrees Celsius or colder, refrigerating all food promptly, following closely the "best before" dates and purchasing only food that can be consumed within a few days. At risk people should avoid eating raw meat, cheese made from unpasteurized milk, unwashed vegetables and hot dogs.
