hey prea, at first I thought these articles were more just exaggerated claims as is often the case with natural/paleo/primal, or whatever eating. anyways i've been seeing this quite alot and I mean "in theory" sounds believable

Not exaggerated at all...keto diets have actually been used by the medical community for many years treating, diabetes, epilepsy, obesity, and reducing tumour size. Sugar or glucose directly feeds cancer tumours so reducing it makes a lot of sense in cancer patients.

The more you read about keto the better it looks.

Don't tell some gurus and bodybuilders that...without carbs they will just wither away to nothing.

can you make significant muscle gains on a keto diet regarding bodybuilding or do you need to do a variation of keto?

can you make significant muscle gains on a keto diet regarding bodybuilding or do you need to do a variation of keto?
OOH...this^^! I have the same question. Last year my only goal was to get shredded and I didn't care about size so I did keto while on low dose test (250) and I achieved amazing results. This year I stayed lean while off and still have visible abs. I just started again and when I asked my friend (who competes) if I can bulk while doing keto by just upping the calories (i.e. 16 oz steak instead of 12, or 8 omega-3 eggs instead of 6, etc) he basically said that I don't understand bodybuilding, and that carbs are absolutely essential to the bulking phase. Lately I've been eating brown rice with chicken/steak and have been getting good gains, but I was wondering if I could bulk and gain significant size while doing keto instead. Always been curious about that. Help me, Prae! :)

Keto dieting is used mainly for fat loss and muscle preservation. You can make some muscle gains on a keto diet if you incorporate a weekend carb up yes but it isnt all that efficient. Carbs are necessary to make muscle gain efficient as insulin is a very anabolic hormone and glycogen spares protein while fueling intense muscle building training sessions. The idea is to use carbs intelligently based around training so fat gain is minimal while muscle gain is maximized.

Thank you, Prae. You've helped me tremendously over the past year in your posts. It's amazing, I've been training for over 14 years now and it wasn't until recently that I was finally able to piece everything together (with your help) and understand what to do to achieve my goals.
In regards to timing carbs, is it safe to say that even while bulking, they should be had pre-workout and mornings while avoiding carbs at night prior to sleep?
So would the following be a decent sample diet regimen to follow?
Meal 1: 10 oz chicken with 1 cup brown rice
(Train)
Meal 2: 50g Whey Isolate
Meal 3: 10 oz Steak with 1 cup brown rice
Meal 4: 10 oz chicken with 1 cup brown rice
Meal 5: 10 oz chicken with salad
Meal 6: 10 oz chicken with salad
I guess what I'm trying to do is gain some size bulking while not going overboard with excess fat. Last year was the first year I got my body fat low enough to see full abdominal development. Prior to that, I was always afraid to cut out carbs or diet properly because the extra fat made me feel "bigger." It was all psychological but I'm glad I got over that.
Once again, thanks for all your help, Prae. One of these days, I really have to pay you back somehow for all this great info you're dishing out for free.

I would say avoid the morning carbs and put more emphasis on before, during, and after training. You will be more focused through the day, stay leaner and have awesome workouts. Many believe they need carbs first thing in the morning but that is not true...for many it just makes you feel more tired....trust me...try it!
