So one movement you place your legs against a restraint apparatus, lower your upper body to approx a 90 degree angle and return. On a reverse hyper your upper body is stationary and your lower body falls to 90 deg and returns. You have handles to hold which engage the lats,Simmons doesn't fully explain the significance.Basically the same movement?

Much more glute ham involvment on reverse hypers.

You hinge at the hip, straighten out.The only difference I can see is more opportunity for a bent leg reverse. The last time I set up my home made reverse in the cage I didn't notice much difference. You can do wide stance on the elitefts unit.Really nice unit and a lot less money. The pendulum reverse hyper gets more ROM I believe.

Poliquin:

"Although the reverse hyper is a valuable exercise,I still recommend the performance of other back exercises such as the conventional and incline back extensions."

I should have been tighter with my terminology, back extension with a neutral spine is what I meant to say.He feels incline back extensions and reverse hypers target the lumbar spine below L3.Apparently many years back the terminology for a reverse hyper was reverse back extension. The unloading of the low spine appears to be the major difference.I think there may be more potential for injury if people get swinging with the reverse hyper.

Doing the hyperextension of incline back extension can hit either lower back or ham/glute depending on if you arch or round your lower back....totally different exercise!
