View Full Version : Triceps ROM?

Hello all! So I've noticed that my left tricep has always been stronger, bigger and able to push more weight than my right tricep. It also looks a more defined than my right one. So a year ago I started trying to isolate my right tricep a little more than my left (e.g. for supersetted diamond push ups I would lean a little more to my right e.t.c.). I have noticed however that my left triceps range of motion is actually larger than my right! For instance, when I flex my tricep, I can feel the whole muscle being flexed, all the way up to the top of my shoulder. When I flex my right, I can only feel it 3/4 of the way. My left elbow I can lock out a bit further than my right as well. I don't know if I can do anything about this or not. I'm pretty sure I didn't injure my elbows anywhere at all so I'm confused as to if I was born with a weird tricep ROM... Do any of you guys have this problem? Any suggestions how I can bring up my right tricep? I've been doing some unilateral work for a while now to see if I can bring it up, but without much success. Let me know what you guys think!

Talk to a healthcare professional, get a diagnosis then let us know.

Try stretching both sides.Note any differences.Get your elbow up by your head, place your fingers on the elbow and stretch it out right to the bottom.

I notice when I do this stretch that I can feel it in the long head of the tricep on my left much more than on my right. This could also be cause my right tricep is bigger than my left however.

@warlock I don't think that it is really that serious. It isn't detrimental to me in any sense at school or in the gym, just an observation I noticed. I think if I went to the doc he would just tell me to deal with it.

Worry about getting both bigger...when your arms are 21" you can worry about perfect symmetry.

Haha thanks Prae, I don't think I'll ever get into the 20" area. It's not really symmetry that's the issue mostly the fact that since my right tricep can't go as far, my left takes over more than it should. I'm assuming I'm the only one that has this issue... I guess I'll just give my right tricep an extra set on my arm day.

Sometimes a nerve issue causes this.Checking strength on some machines one arm at a time can help identify problem areas.

Hmm, good point, but I think my ulnar is fine. We're learning about the nerves in my Internal Human Anatomy course and we've talked about damaged nerves. My grip strength is good and I'm not losing any sensation to my wrists or posterior part of my hand which would be common with ulnar nerve damage. Same with the radial nerve. Usually if you have damage to your radial nerve you cannot (or it is very hard to flex your tricep). I can flex my tricep all right, I just cannot feel the whole muscle while flexing unless I really hard. Seems like I am the only person with this problem...

I have a noticeable difference in mine. I believe it stems from years of pitching/throwing and golf, which has my right tricep all outta whack. Regardless of the cause (this is just my thinking), I have a great RMT who is helping to get things back the way they should be.

You can develop a problem with the arm elevated exerting force,I was told my problem originated in the thoracic region of the spine.Chiros advice.

Oh that could be a problem... What is your chiropractor doing to address the problem if you don't mind me asking?

This was about 7 or 8 years ago,I was sliding a heavy object overhead with arms extended and pinched a nerve. He could only alleviate the pins and needles in my arm,not get rid of it with adjustments. I was only capable of exerting maybe 3-5 pounds of force with my triceps.I still have a tremor that runs through it flexed at about a 100 hertz.

^That sounds pretty serious. Maybe I'll get a checkup sooner than I thought... Just in case.

Thanks!
