I decided to write a thread with my top 3 software suggestions based on performance and price in different product categories.

For those who don't know me, a quick of background about myself is as follow. I have over 10 years experience in the IT industry, holding various positions as hardware engineer and senior software architect at industry leading companies. I worked at Matrox, Intel, nVidia just to name a few and I now have my own company that specializes in robotic-aided production and distribution...Dang, this is starting to sound like a C.V. :)

So I am writing this thread as a token of appreciation for all the stuff I learn from forum members every day and my way to pay back for the info I receive by browsing through the informative posts on his board.

It is nothing much, but I hope it can be of use to some of you that are wondering if you are using the right software and if there is anything better for the job.

The list is not meant to be complete but will be growing, so I will be updating the list as I get requests for more categories. All programs unless noted otherwise are Windows programs.

I do not work for any of the companies I recommend nor do I get any financial gains from my recommendations.

I hope the list could be of help.

I am a tech as well. Kaspersky is the best AV program out there bar none. Norton is crap.

Spybot is a good freeware program for detecting and removing spyware...Get it here... http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

For media I like K-lite which is free and can be found here...http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm

For images I like Irfanview. It has been able to open some images PhotoShop could not. The editing is not as powerful as PhotoShop but it would suit most people's needs and it is free.

True. Irfan is a great image viewer and lightweight manipulation tool. It is unfair to pit it against Photoshop in the same category because Irfan is more of an image viewer/converter type of program while Photoshop is an advanced image editor. I will add that category. Thanks.
