Hey guys, being somewhat unfamiliar with how the winner of a competition is officially decided, I have a question. If a 5 is the best score you can receive, how did heavyweight division winner, Zane Watson, place behind super heavyweight and overall winner Henri-Pierre Ano when Zane showed a 5 on the scorecard and Henri-Pierre scored a 6? Not to take anything away from Henri, he looked fantastic, but just wondering how that final decision is made.

^^ not included is the overall scorecard.
What you're seeing is the divisional scores

Oh, o.k. So those scores are thrown out for the overall and the competitors are re-evaluated against each other? Makes sense. I knew I could count on the natenator.

scores are simply sum of ranks. 5 possible ranks. 5 first place votes = score of 5. scored within division so no way to look between divisions. this questions comes up every year so don't feel too bad! lol
there's a bit more to it with crossing out high and low, ties, etc. but in a nutshell if a class looks like 5, 10, 15, 20... it means all judges agreed on 1st through 4th. If a score is 7 and 8 for the top 2 guys, it means 3 judges had him first, and the other 2 second - and vice versa. Nothing to do with assigning a score to their physique (which some other organizations do). I prefer the ranking system as well. the only flaw with the ranking system is that their is a huge bias towards how the head judge places them. If you're judging and you we're questioning something, and all of a sudden that person appears front and center, you may be more inclined to say, ah, someone else sees it that way, I'll go with the flow. In a show with unlimitted time, you might not arrange competitors at all... just do movements so that they can see from all angles. they could ask each judge for their own comparisons, etc. However to speed things up, if you have a head judge arrange them it helps speed things along. sure you might get overlooked and have a guy come 6th who deserved 5th, but what's the difference really (aside from requalifying for the event!! which could be a big deal for you)... I think thats why you often see 6 guys in a first call out. they want to make sure they get the correct top 5.
Overall I think the judges did a pretty good job. some people were upset, but overall I think most were bang on as always
