View Full Version : Reebok Crossfit Championship
I have caught this on TSN a few times now.
As gay as I thought Crossfit was, and it kinda still is, some of the guys on here are unbelievably strong and athletic.
I dont necessarily agree with or have any motivation to do sets at 20+ of olympic lifts but these guys have built some impressive physiques and are moving some serious weight. A few of these guys look like they could step on stage and place in a show, but have all the functional athleticism to back it up.
Not really worth watching for more than 10 minutes at a time, but interesting none the less.
Anyone else seen this?
I really doubt they could step on a provincial stage and compare.

Crossfit looks like it would be alot of fun but obviously the goals of crossfit differ alot from the goals of bodybuild, still got alot more respect for these guys/gals than people sitting at home on the couch eating cheetos or whatever.

Try Strongman, it's just like Crossfit but for Men...lol
In all seriousness what they do isn't easy but they get a bad rep because lots of the crossfit gyms "factories" have 1 trainer for 20-30 trainees with lots of trainees being totally new to training and they have them doing snatches, deadlifts, etc... with terrible form and everyone is encouraged to go balls out well the result is a ton of injuries.
Better than doing nothing but dangerous for a newbie to training especially if you don't have a proper coach.
Strongman is better and they now have weight classes and skill levels, amateur, intermediate, advanced, pro

Strongman is a blast and some of the events can be damned creative and nothing is tougher than a medley of two, three or more lifts/events. I remember one time we had to pull a tugboat in from off shore using a rope and pulling hand over hand....that was fun, and one medley we did was a farmers walk using a 100 foot boom chain as the line to follow and then once you got to the end (run/walk up one side and down the other) you had to flip your tire up to the other end of the chain and then to finish it off pull that damned boom chain hand over hand into the middle of the tire and of course it was done as a head to head race....more than a couple of guys puked on that medley that day.....Strongman will separate the men from the cross-fit kids in very short order....

I totally agree with some of the comments. It comes down to the trainer/coach at the "box" they work out at. The athletes that you see at the Games have great coaches and dedicate themselves to not only training their strength and Met-con workouts but working day in day out on their mobility and flexibility. Though every workout can be scaled for those that cannot do the prescribed WOD, there will be those individuals that will push/pull/squat/deadlift/snatch beyond their limits and therefore injure themselves. These people would also be ones most likely doing ridiculous movements at your local global gym.
Yes, these men and women are extremely strong and fit. Most of the women in the Games are in their mid 20s. What girl whether bodybuilder or fitness or figure or whatever can rattle off 10 -12 Handstand Pushups (that would be like military pressing 135#) or do 25 pull-ups non stop (and don't get me started on the kipping versus strict version of a pull-up---they both have their place in a training protocol.) These guys are power cleaning 275-315 likes it's a sandwich. Girls are snatching their bodyweight while other girls at a global gym are doing their 35 minutes on the eliptical trainer.
This year's games had the athletes start with a 750m open water swim, a 5km or more single speed bike ride through sand and what not then finish with a 10km cross country run... and that was day 1! Then the other dozen or so events to be completed in the next 3 days.
I've used a Crossfit type of training to get me ready for the stage at both the provincial level and national level for bodybuilding. Being a female, natural competitor my body just responds best to this type of training. I believe that because the lifts and movements that I do are 3 dimensional, full body, and using various energy systems, I achieved a physique that was very symmetrical.
I would have to agree with the earlier post about these competitors being able to step on stage with just a few weeks prep. Have you seen pics of Rich Fronning the men's champion? No bicep curls or lateral raises does this guy do! Google Angie Pye---35+ years old. I think she could do pretty well if she stepped on stage. But this is not what these athletes are looking for. They have their goal. Just as the bodybuilders and fitness, figure, etc girls/guys have their goal.
There is something for everyone.
Have you ever been to a bodybuilding show where there were 35,000 people watching? That's what the Games drew in this year. Plus the sponsorship of Reebok. Something has to be clicking, wouldn't ya think?

What do you figure your heart rate was after that one Patrick?
