P,

I try to check my heart rate upon rising every day to see what it is. It’s usually anywhere from 54-60bpm. I read somewhere way back a good way to know if you are overtraining or fatigued or not properly recovered is if your resting heart rate upon waking up is higher than your normal average. Something about cortisol levels being high? Any truth to this or is this an accurate way of telling.

Today it was 72bpm and I still tired even thought I had uninterrupted sleep.

Thanks

Cortisol is highest in the morning (normally). If your heart rate is close to 100 in the morning it would indicate adrenal stress but at 72 I wouldnt worry.

Lou Ferrigno was an advocate of checking every morning.

Not everyone is going to have the resting heart rate of a ninja or Buddhist monk even with the very best nutrition and training/cardio programs, but yours isn't really all that high in terms of what is acceptable.

Ferrigno felt a higher morning hr was a good indicator to take an extra day or lighten up somewhat.
