Hi Guys,

Anyone suffer from back spasms...especially after leg and back days? If so, have you been able to do any proactive treatments to prevent them from happening. They are such a bitch!!

Thanks.

What do you mean by back spams ? Do you mean like locked-up and you can't walk or do anything for a while ?

I just work on stretching out my lower back and I also work on stretching out my hip flexors as these can cause some nasty lower back/hip issues if the 'flexors get tight.

^ This.

I still dunno what kind of spams you are talking about, but usually a spasm is a protective mechanism, all jam up to protect the nerves/spine. And a good assessment of your pelvis flexibility could reveal a lot about your condition, and as Skailes said it's not rare to see tight hip flexors causing back problems.

Yes, the kind where you can't walk.

Recently, I experienced a mid back spasm which was a new experience. I had a injury about 6 years ago which revealed herniation of a disc but that has since been worked through. For my lower back I always try to stretch a ton to avoid lock up but it doesn't always work.

I've read that once you have one spasm your muscles tend to spasm more often for no real reason and that you have to train your muscles not to anymore. I'm interested in any specific techniques any of you have used to treat this.

Yeah lower back problem can be a biatch once it began, but there is hope. I've been dealing with that for about 20 years and lost about 2 cumulative years of my life lying in a bed, from a few days up to 2 months without being able to walk. Now I'm much, much better, I do not spams anymore, anyway since quite a while it did not happened.

Do you do squats, deadlifts, do lower back work ?

Personally I was avoiding them, I use to not even be able to do squats with the bar only without putting me a risk. But realized later, how much important it is to have a strong core.

Here are what the techniques I have use to get better : I see a good chiropractor every week, did scan/radio to see what is going on (hernia in lower back and 2 compressed disk in the neck), I did a PICP assessment to see if anything was tight and found out that I had a few things tight, especially one of the hip flexors (right side), Ql, etc... so I began to stretch them every day after workout (always stretch after, never before working out), when flexibility improved I began to do some light full squats with a straight back, heel elevated, at first it was hard, I tried when I was not enough flexible yet and I even locked-up at the gym with light weights, but it got better, I began to do some very light DL, hyper extensions, all in supreme perfect form, no messing around. Back is always straight. This helped me a lot, having a strong core and good flexibility all around the pelvis is a must.

Also had something mid back, I had a rib that had moved, felt good after it was replaced (not while lol).

Hope it help.

Thanks. My mid-back spasms on me, once in a while, and it always seems to be when I've neglected my abs for a while. I guess my back takes on more than normal and this is the end result.

EricWe've got a reverse hyper at our gym and NO ONE uses it......EVER! With the exception of using it for setting gym bags on etc.....Unless you've got a lot of PLs at your gym as well as serious lifters I seriously doubt that it would see enough use to warrent the purchase.

I quit my last major gym chain because they didn't even have an adjustable GHD.I really wish my present gym would spring for a reverse hyper.
