A few yrs ago when both hubby and I were dieting down I'd shop at NO Frills.

Now were lazy and not shopping for bargains. Im at Sobeys most days, expensive I know.

I eat fish that was fresh 5-7 x per week, he eats beef and chicken.

But he is going to be in the orient for 2 weeks each month over the summer and I'm looking to save a few hundred a week on groceries.

I gave up my Cosco membership...is it worth it?

Where do you find lower cost fish at?

I buy 90% of my meats at cosco in bulk and then vacuum seal them and freeze it. It's a lot in one shot, but I normally only have to go buy meat once a month. For the rest, such as buffallo, I get it right from the butcher.

My local Loblaws has great deals on fish each day. Bought some atlantic salmon yesterday for $1.55/100 grams. Not too shabby. I do find Sobeys to be one of the most expensive stores to shop at. You can save even more money by buying your vegs and fruits at no frills/food basics. I never buy my vegs/fruits at Loblaws unless their on special. $3.99/lb for red peppers is ridiculous!

Oh yeah forgot to add, you can't go wrong with deli cut meats. I'm currently hooked on piri-piri (african red chili) chicken. :-)

costco has excellent quality meat but it is not a cheap place to buy meat if you ask me. Decent value for the quality but definitely not a bargain when you consider the volume youre buying.

You also have to watch costco, a lot of the stuff there is not cheap, in fact it can be found cheaper elsewhere and you dont have to buy multi/bulk packs. Like tuna..... the cheapest tuna they have is 6 cans for about $6.99 superstore sells tuna for $0.69 for singles every day of the week. Costco does have cheap rice and oats though!

Depending where you live, youre probably best off shopping in multiple locations if you have time. Always buy your produce from a produce store not a supermarket, it will be 1/2 the price and 2x as good. Im in vancouver and there is a famous joint called sunrise near chinatown where produce is amazing and pretty much free its so cheap. Sea food I get through my friend who works for a hotel or fresh off the docks by granville island or steveson.

Ask around, a lot of restaurants and hotels have no problem selling employees food at cost (which is dirt cheap as they buy 100's of lbs) so if you know anyone working in a place like this it can be a goldmine! I get fresh, free range chicken breasts at $5.25/kg and shrink wrapped fillet mignons (4oz) for $1.79 each!!! only problem is you have to buy decent quanitities

This is true. When I set out to do a full grocery, I normally start at Sobeys. Move on to Superstore. Then hit Cosco. To get everything I want/need I hit all 3. The good thing for me is they are almost all next to each other and close to home. Then I do a once/month trip accross town to the butcher.

Wouldn't it be wiser to start at the cheaper stores for most of your needs then move on to the higher end ones?

1. NO Frills

2. Cosco

3. Super store or Sobeys

We don't have a no frills here. And every cosco trip is the same, I only buy my meats and spices there. Everything else like fruits/breads/etc... are just too large in quantity for me and they go bad before I eat them. So I just know not to pick up any meat at sobeys/superstore.

I get most of my meat from Costco. I also buy a quarter buffalo every few months (already butchered) from a farm. You get lots for a good price. I also hunt deer in the fall. The meat is great and you can’t beat the price.

I saved quite a bit on chicken breasts at Costco, but for awhile I was getting bad batches...they were grizzly....and so I started just going to a regular grocery store and getting a little bit less for the money, but at least it was good quality chicken. You will save quite a bit at Costco though, and I was just unlucky with a few batches I think. You will save almost 50% on egg whites too.

I also buy all my meat at costco, I think its just over $13 per kg of chicken and actually you can get it at superstore for $11 per kg, but the Lillydale from costco is a lot better.

Every month or so, M&M Meat Shops put their frozen skinless chicken breasts on sale from 19.99 per box to 13.99 per box. The package is 1.3 kg and usually contains 12 or so breasts.

When they are on sale, the price is actually a little better then Costco's.

This is true, but the chicken is so small and dry, I really like my lillydale from cosco

Costco for many of the staples, but others are correct in saying that not everything is cheaper (like the tuna).

Boxed Meat Revolution in Guelph for meat, and price choppers for the veggies. I eat a lot of salad, they must think I am a rabbit as I go every day. I am also hooked on raspberry vinegarette dressing.

Time to stock up....Price Choppers is having a case sale on boneless, skinless chicken breast. A 4 kg case is $17.64 which works out to $2\lb.

Whole foods, fortino's . I try to get mostly organic food. I had a costco burger at a party once and was horrified as to what I was eating, tasted awful. I'm for quality over quantity anyday.
