The following open letter by Floyd Mayweather Jr. was was released by Kelly Swanson, Mayweather's publicist.

Dear Media:

It is with a heavy heart that I write you this message today. I have decided to permanently retire from boxing. This decision was not an easy one for me to make as boxing is all I have done since I was a child. However, these past few years have been extremely difficult for me to find the desire and joy to continue in the sport.

I have said numerous times and after several of my fights over the past two years that I might not fight again. At the same time, I loved competing and winning and also wanted to continue my career for the fans, knowing they were there for me and enjoyed watching me fight. However, after many sleepless nights and intense soul-searching I realized I could no longer base my decision on anything but my own personal happiness, which I no longer could find. So I have finally made up my mind, spoken to my family, particularly my mother, and made my decision.

I am sorry I have to leave the sport at this time, knowing I still have my God-given abilities to succeed and future multi-million dollar paydays ahead, including the one right around the corner. But there comes a time when money doesn't matter. I just can't do it anymore. I have found a peace with my decision that I have not felt in a long time.

Finally, I want to personally thank all of my fans for their loyalty and dedication as my career comes to a close. I always believed that their enthusiasm and support helped carry me to victory with every fight I ever had.

It was a great joy to have fought for all of you. Now I hope you understand my decision and wish me well with the rest of my life.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.

I say good for Floyd. It's so rare that a champ steps down while on top.How many times have we had to watch legends become ordinary cause they couldn't let go at the right time. I think Rocky Marciano is the only other boxer to step down like this. Anyways it's still a big loss for boxing especially because it's srtuggling for popularity right now.

its the guys with speed that lose their stuff the quickest. once they lose the edge on speed they become beatable, roy jones prime example . thats why i think floyd is being smart

Ya you're right he retired the champ, forgot about him. I just think he was lucky to get out of the Klitscko fight with the belt. I don't think he was gonna win that one if it had kept going nor a rematch. But I guess we'll never know cause LL retired right after.

did klitsco win a round in that fight.lewis busted him up in that fight.he had a couple of moments when lewis got tired but lewis was settin him up at the end thats why the ref stopped it . lewis would have killed him in rematch. but why bother he already tkod him.lewis has enough canadian in him to be smart enough to know all the big fighters got beat by him so thers no more bucks left to risk him self on

Are you hammered? I thought you were starting prep.... you shouldn't be drinking!!J/K buddy. I thought the fight was alot closer then you did obviously but you're right Klitsko was bleeding like a pig. Lewis looked suspect, he hadn't fought someone that was as big as him before and towards the end Klitsko was lookin good(except for the bleeding). The rematch we will never know so we'll have to agree to disagree on that one. You know just for arguing with me I hope your prep goes really shitty and all your cheat meals taste like ass.LOL.I only got 6 weeks left myself, all is going good, but can't wait till it's over.

with 6 weeks left your prob quite dillusional with loss of long term memory.lewis no marks anywhere, klitsko ripped to peices, remember. it wasnt that great a fight lewis was undertrained as usualo but had more left than klitsco.anyway i hate lewis, hasnt been a good hw since they got over 220lbs. what show you doing,, you better win or your banned!good luck bro post a pic.peace

I can't argue with the dillusional part but I'm that way at the best of times. You see the Calzaghe/ Hopkins fight? Hopkins arguing that decision, now that guy is dillusional, he should of hung em up. But ya HW boxing sucks who the hell is even out there? Pacquiao and Cotto are the best guys to watch in all of boxing IMO. Oh well MMA is takin over anyway. I'm prepping for the B.C.'s , just started tanning so I'll post some pics in the next couple weeks.Cheers.
Jimmy
