From Poliquin
Protein and those with real kidney problems – the other viewpoint
A recent paper discussed two of the National Kidney Foundation Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (K/DOQI) clinical practice guidelines for nutrition in chronic renal failure.

These guidelines recommended a dietary protein intake of 1.2 g protein/kg body weight/day for clinically stable maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients (Guideline 15) and 1.2 to 1.3 g protein/kg/day for clinically stable chronic peritoneal dialysis (CPD) patients (Guideline 16).

If you do the math, that is roughly 50% to 63% greater than the regular RDA or recommended daily allowance. But I thought eating protein was evil, evil, evil? Maybe not.

Scientists suggest that the possible mechanisms that require these increased protein needs include (a) the substantial quantity of amino acids, peptides, and proteins removed by the dialysis procedure and (b) the protein catabolic or anti-anabolic state caused by the uremic milieu, the inflammatory state, the oxidative and carbonyl stress, and the bio-incompatible dialysis materials to which MHD and CPD patients are exposed. In English, that means these individuals tend to be very catabolic and need to somehow replace the lost amino acids or protein. (2)

Am I the only one that can foresee protein powders joining the growing list of banned substances? Problem is, we got 120 lbs teens buying protein powders and ingesting like 8-10 grams per pound of bodyweight thinking it's gonna explode their bodies into Arnolds.

Everything in moderation and you'll live happy.

I actually just read about this the other day. Yes protein does make your kidneys work harder. If there is an underlying problem with your kidneys then yes the extra protein may cause damage. If you are healthy, then your kidneys can more than handle the extra work.

Just for fun I was looking at a muscle juice label. 1 serving contains 55g of protein. Which then said was 110% of the Daily Value! Then the 150some carbs were only 50%! Granted they base those on a 2000cal diet.... So your avg person that follows these guidelines at 3,000 cals/day should be consuming 450g of carbs, 100g of fat and only 75g of protein. No wonder there are so many fat ****ers out there.

RDA is recommended daily nutritional needs to keep scurvey and malnutrition at bay. Doctors..., ya they went to school and studied shit, but in the end very few of them are competent or confident enough in themselves and their knowledge to look outside their narrow scope.
If protein was so hard on our kindneys and with as many bodybuilders as there are do you not think there would be an epidemic in this country. Blanket statements by morons should be typed up, neatly rolloed into a tight cylinder and forcefully crammed up the ass of the guy making the statement. Of course that would cause IBS or paper crammed up my ass symdrome and we would have to go and get some perscriptions for this and probably have to see a specialist and then physio:wtf

The doctor that says to much protein is harmful to your kidneys probably goes out and drinks ****in apple martinis every night. In the whole scheme of things body builders are severely more healthy then the average person, I am disregarding steroids with this point.

Even if taking in 400g of protein is slightly hard on the kidneys, that fact that we aren't eating Big Mac's and KFC or drinking alcohol heavily I think should make up for it.

Well said, funny how these same doctors don't warn their patients of the kidney damage caused by smoking, eating like a pig, boozing up, etc...

I've heard discussions from ignorant buffons that creatine use is a precursor to steroid abuse. Imagine that eh? :D:yeah

High protein diets are harder on the wallet than they are on the kidneys imo.

Not if you don't mind buying powders near expiration. My local supp store has 2.2 lbs tubs of whey isolate for $14.99, once they reach within 2 months are expiring, they go on the "cheap shelf". I must have some Jewish blood in me, OH VEY! :p
