View Full Version : Liberty Village Goodlife
So after posting in the other thread about how hardcore this place is, I will continue to post about the unbelievable things I see occurring here literally on a daily basis.
I already mentioned the 405 3 inch squat so I will move on to yesterdays occurrence:
Standing one arm concentration curls with a 40 lb dumbbell in the middle of a (very) crowded weight / cardio / machine area. Sounds reasonable enough no? Wait for it.........wait for it.........
Letting out extremely loud grunts as if he was squatting 500lbs plus. Im not talking about loud breathing or the occasional burst of air to get through a *cough* curl rep, I mean SCREAMING grunts to curl this ****ing dumbbell.
To make it even more amazing, this guys calves are about 12 inches around, and his quads not much bigger. You think Im exaggerating but Im not. Up top this guy has a decently built physique but his lower half is embarrassing to a 15 year old basketball player.
This gym is unreal. I will update AOAP.
Cheers.
(If you dont believe me, stop by this place for a workout between 4-8 and see for yourself. Incredible feats of douchebag behaviour by dudes in their 30's+ wearing a t shirt that wouldnt fit a well built 13 year old)

I know what you mean, we have those DB too in my GL too, I have one that scream like for his life while he does 3 plates on the leg press 45, going about 1/2 of the normal motion and he does have a helper to push the weight.
Every time I go train there, I shake my head at seeing this sh!t, it's like a circus... and every time I train there, I can't help it : I help someone to train better or avoid to be hurt/loosing their time doing stupid move. But there is a lot of serious case I don't even bother.
I am training since 1983's, so I have seen the 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s evolution, or devolution I should say. I really think a big part of it is because you have to pay for a trainer. Back in 80s, there was no fees to get a trainer making you a routine, it came with the membership. Early 90s came the first forms of certification to be trainer, which became a requirement to train people later. Now as today you have to be a certified trainer to train people, you can have toothpick arms that could be used as chopsticks in Chinese restaurant and a belly but as long as you have your internet week-end certification you're good to go. At my actual gym, there is 15 males personal trainer, 1 has a shape, 2 others you can see they train, all the others could be mistaken for a clerk at Walmart or the guy that give coffee and donuts at Tim Horton's.
The results today is that there is much more trainers then back in the time, but more then ever peoples don't know how to train, either their trainers can't really help them because they don't even know how to train themselves or people don't wanna pay them to learn how to train.
Most gym end-up with people doing stupid training exercises that don't even exist, they don't know what to do and all those trainers that don't know nothing leads to no results, so people quits. They have to recruit new members constantly, because renewal is very low.
Back in the 80s, a good trainer (included with the membership) watched over everyone making sure they were well supervised and their efforts would pay off. He was not in his desk, he was on the floor, watching, spotting and pushing everyone to make the extra mile. When he wrote a program, he could asked people (for people enough comfortable) to strip their clothes down, make them pose, spot the weaknesses, measure them regularly to see the progress, make sure they get their diet right, they got the right supplements, watching for the don't miss a training, etc... and the result is that finally people felt they were in good hands and taken care of, that's what they want/need. I really think it's one of the key to success in this business.
Every decades seems getting more pathetic.

i hate goodlife....i got kicked out of mine yesterday.....
Update:
Most of you know what ILS is im guessing. Well there is a MASSIVE outbreak of this syndrome at my gym apparently. If you are over 30, a guido, and can fit into a medium wife beater or abercrombie top apparently your lats become huge instantly and your arms cannot touch your sides. This phenomena is stunningly consistent among a specific demographic of people.

I'm guessing because you said guidos you mean Italians/Greeks/ or Portugues. Since I'm half Italian and have many friends who are Greek and Pork n Cheese I'll call them out. But from what I have seen it's not relegated to one specific group. It's always been around, they just look more lame with the faux hawks and Abercrombie garb. I just refer to them as ****ing turds.
^^ You know what Im talking about. Dont forget the persians and arabs as well. I dont know why but this seems to be so consistent across the board for this ethnic group of peoples. Every area of the world has their dbags and stereotypes but this one is so accurate its scary.
The faux hawk is pretty funny though. Im glad you mentioned that.
Every time I think I need to learn to be more tolerant of others and accepting I see blatant efforts by people who are old enough to know better than how they are acting / portraying themselves to others. I often wonder HOW ARE THESE PEOPLE EMPLOYED? Does this person behave this way in the professional world? I would not be able to take them seriously if I was their employer / colleague
"persians" bah.....dont church it up.....

I know that area is home to a lot of the tech start-up companies there. Gawd... tell me these guys aren't part of the web programming breatherin. And to think I considered going to that gym to see more muscleheads / hardcore peeps. But at least I'd stand a better chance on the playing field there. lol.

Guessing he's talking about the locker room ....
ya the ladies...... :p
A couple days ago I watched a guy do "bent rows" on the machine with the fulcrum.
His actual exercise was a combination of dead lifts, back extensions, and somewhat of a bicep curl. He was standing on flat ground even though there is an angled foot pad to ensure you bend over far enough to make this exercise worthwhile. He had to make sure everyone was watching him move 5 plates for his "rows".
Such a ****ing joke. At least 30 years old too, and 30-40lbs overweight. Keep it up LVG!

Hi everyone,
New to the site and my first post! I have been GL member for years and used to go to liberty location up until last summer but move up to north york for a year. Today I stopped by Liberty location after about a year and I noticed more dudes making noise and trying to show off compared to a year ago, even though it was at 2pm.
My main question which brought me to this thread via google, were the dumbbells replaced? I think I remember using 85s last year but I asked one of the girls and she said no they have always been up to 75s and can't have more than that since it is on the second floor. Victoria park location is second floor too and they have up to 110 or 120, maybe even more. Were the heavier weights taken away because show off people kept dropping them on the floor? Or was it always up to 75s?

I've been to that location a couple of times on the weekend when I'm driving around, it's easily one of the most hardcore gyms in Canada. I think that perhaps you're intimidated by the massive size and brutal workouts these guys are enduring! I've even seen a guy working out with one hand and talking on the phone with the other, now that is hardcore!
and yes I am kidding... although it's not as much of a joke as that gym is LOL

Hi everybody,
I alternate between the Union Station location and the Liberty Village one - just for variety... I end up going to the Liberty Village one on Saturdays and Sundays, usually between 08:30 and 10:00. The Liberty Village Goodlife at this particular time is not bad at all. You avoid most of the douchebags and young crowd with absolutely no gym etiquette whatsoever. Most of them are probably curing their hangovers anyways. Even though I'm there to work out, I can't help but notice the hot ladies :-)

The men's locker room at the Liberty Village one is however one of the worst when it comes to gay dudes.... I have seen two guys coming out of the same shower stall on more than one occasions. I have seen guys obviously showcasing their junk for others to see many times too. One time, I remember a guy obviously looking at his penis in the mirror, stroking it once for length, etc.
I also have seen the occasional odd old dude blow drying his nuts.... lol
