View Full Version : Fibre or Fats to slow down protein digestion.

I'm usually pretty terrible with milk regardless if it has lactase or not and could use an easy and quick way to get a shake in as part of a meal. (I usually would sub the meat for a whey drink).
But of course, if this was during the day, i'd like to try to make the digestion last longer, especially during sleep. Better to add in fibre or fats (ie, eat almonds) to allow for sustained release?
Not looking to use any whey blends or concentrates by the way.
Thanks!

Have you tried Almond or Coconut milk? Tastes great and Costco where I live sells the Unsweetened Almond Milk, 6L for $9.99.

Adding Olive Oil to your shakes will slow digestion.

Why not do both ? This will slow more. Personally I use olive oil, milled flax and psyllium.

I currently use water in my protein shakes. But, I use a whey blend. So I'm going to take the concentrates out of the mix by switching to an isolate (among other dietary adjustments). Plus, my busy schedule doesn't allow me to prep whole foods (bulk prepping isn't really great either. Done that before... can't really sustain the taste of 2-3 day old chicken breasts. lol)

Not a bad idea. As long as I don't get a ton of gas.
How much olive oil do you use?
How much of each do you use?

If you're in a calorie deficit or dieting, fibre is always a great option. theres no harm in adding in a half cup of fibre 1 buds to a few meals. munch on a cup of that stuff and you'll be full for longer.

About a tbsp of milled flax, a tbsp of psyllium and one of olive oil. You can go for 2 tbsp of olive oil if you have a faster metabolism.

Why not have an eggwhite shake instead of whey? Eggwhites with some crystal light lightly blended is delish and is absorbed slower than whey (I think a good 5 hours or so).

Why switch to an isolate? Are you having problems with the blends?

Yes. Was still getting gas even from the blends. I get it bulk now so no big deal.

Adding fats to protein will slow digestion...ie whey protein isolate plus almond butter will result in a more even trickle of amino acids into the blood stream...similar to casein protein. Adding fiber to our diet reduces transit time through the colon.
