View Full Version : Deadlift Groin Pressure

Hi All,

It would be helpful to know if others have this problem, and to hear what they've done to correct it. Here goes:

When I stand up during a deadlift, I find that the bar always 'crushes' my groin simply because my arms align squarely with that area of my body. I don't believe that I have inordinately short arms or the like. I am 6'1.5" tall and my 'wingspan' measures the same, so I believe I am completely proportional in that respect. At the same time, when I see other guys perform the deadlift, the bar usually rests further down their upper legs, well below the groin, so they do not experience any discomfort. This happens even when they stand perfectly straight. I, on the other hand, have to remain semi-squatted if I am not to bring the bar any higher and crush myself, which is obviously no good.

Any ideas?

Can you post a pic of yourself standing straight with arms at your sides?

The bar touches my balls. Hope that helped.

Some people have different anatomy which makes certain moves more difficult than others. Maybe the following will help;

1. Use DB instead of the BB, or
2. Use the large hexagonal bar and stand in the middle of it
3. Lifting straps so that the bar sits lower on the body

The weight placement is a bit different but you can still complete the same motion.

#2. You mean the trap bar?

You would have to post a video for us to help you out the best.

Legs closer together, narrow your grip. Your shoulders should be forward and let them sink downwards to minimize bar travel. In a nutshell you need to learn how to deadlift properly. These are all assumptions and may not be applicable but would normally help.

I believe smalllady is refering to the hex bar not a trap bar. They are very similar but a hex bar is large enough for you to stand in the middle of it. I have one for shrugs. Never done deadlifts with it personally
