Hi CBB, got an easy question tonight, no need to run away. :D
I saw something today and wanna run it by you folks for your opinions. I saw a video of a bb'er doing dumbbell curls but with a twist, he twisted the dumbbells 180 degrees at the top neutral position and slowly lowered his hands down in the negative. I sorta understand what he's trying to do, engage the bicep muscle in the positive and trigger the tricep in the negative phase. Is this a good idea? What do you folks think?

Thanks.

If i am reading this correctly he is supinated grip on the postive and pronated )palms down) on the way down?

If so it is too create equal tension through out the range. Your stronger on the negative and by pronating on the downward phase makes you weaker which in theory makes the upward and and downward phase equally difficult. It has nothign to do with the tri's if this is what you were explaining?

180 from neutral would mean standing with palms away from thigh. As you begin curl motion you start your rotation for a 180 at the peak of contraction and then reversing. If I am reading right there would be no tricep involvement here and it would be all targeting the bicep (both heads) and the brachioradialis, pronator teres, supinator and probably the anconeus. Theoretically by employing the forearm complex and the bicep would alow for managing a heavier weight through the concentric phase and since you can manage much more on the eccentric phase this may alow for more overload, which would mean increases in strength and muscle size.

i believe they're called zottman curls or something close to that. Charles Poliquin is a big believer in doing them. I tried using them in my routine for awhile but I wasn't that impressed.

Oh ok, thanks for the expalnation Tank. I thought it was to include the tri's into the set. Silly me. :greet

Cool, thanks. But do they work? :rofl

persoanlly I stick to good old straight BB curl, alt DB (with supination) and some machines when I need a break. I find using heavy BB curls are my meat and potato's, I go heavy and use lose form.

Does it work? Couldnt say, have never tried them long enough to see.

Right, well said. I too find that going heavy and keeping the reps around 7-8 per set with db and barb curls really gets the blood pumping and the muscle gorges in size. Gotta love those extra few reps that seem impossible to do but you still do them, screaming out loud all the way. :yeah:hu

From what I can picture, using a pronated grip for the negative would shift a lot of the weight onto the brachioradialus in the forearm. It would basically be the negative portion of reverse curls. It would not incorporate the triceps as you are not "pushing" the weight down, you would instead be "lowering" the weight.

Try it, you may like it. Part of the function of the bicep is to rotate your palm upwards. Just turn your palm and see the influence on your bicep. You want to remember on the way up, palms turn up, on the way down, palm rotates down. Rotate at about the half way point for both concentric (up) and eccentric (down) movement. This technique has been around for a long time. Try different techniques from time to time (say every 3 months) to keep your routine from getting stale.
