I have a couple of questions in regards to this show and other OPA events.

Do you think that this show usually has more competitors then other regional OPA shows? I was looking at the results and it seems that there was more competitors in the middle weight, light heavy category (where I would be) compared to other shows. Is this normal for this show?

I am looking for a show that has some competitors in it as I do not want to get first or second because of deafault.

If not can anyone tell me what show usually has the most comepitors competing in it during the earlier months of the year.

If you place 2nd in a tested event does that grant you a by to provincials for 2 years just like it would if you did in a non tested show?

Thanks in advance.

If I remember correctly, the tested and non-tested streams are two different competitive streams. If you do a tested OPA show, you are then qualified to do the tested (national qualifier) provincials. If you want to do the non-tested provincials you would then have to do a regional qualifier (non-tested). there are usually about 4 shows to choose from within a couple months of the provincials each year. I think it is just the luck of the year and show that determine typical numbers. One year there could be 1-2, the next 5-6. I think missisauga is usually the bigger show - but even then you may end up lucking out and falling in a small class.

I hear you about placing by default. I often fall into a class with only a handful of competitors. It's usually the way it goes for the lighter classes I find.

Thank you for the reply steve.

I have done both tested and non tested shows but only qualified in the tested stream (due to default unfortunately). I was going to stay with the tested stream since I am not the biggest guy by any means and find it difficult to compete as I am 6'2. I was just looking at doing a non tested for some practice again (as there are more competitors usually) in the spring and then do Tested provincial in September 2013. I came second in a tested show in May 2011 so I believe I am qualified for 2 years to do tested provincials. I may be mistaken and if so I will just do a regional tested show in spring 2013 to qualify again.

I wish there were more people who wanted to compete in the lighter categories.

Thanks again.

Is there any pictures up anywhere from this show??? Muscle Insider has nothing...

Muscle Insider wasn't at the 2013 Stratfords. Great show. Audience was packed. Classes were pretty good.
I had 3 clients in the show. They got:
- 4th place Figure (very proud of her as she came to us 7 weeks out - we normally don't take clients that close)
- class win and overall for Figure
- class win in the Middleweights

Overall BB was a guy who was STACKED. Definitely a National level physique. He was hanging with IFBB Pro Jason Marcovici - not sure if Jason was his coach but the guy looked amazing.

Try Facebook for some pics.

I think the low turn outs are now from the price to be a memeber of the OPA, also the price to enter a show has went up.
When i did a show in 2009 it was 80 to be a opa member now 100.00, also the show was 45.00 local now 100.00 per class.

I'm not sure I understand why that would be an issue. We spend thousands of dollars to get ready for a show but then don't want to pony up the small amount to compete. It makes no sense to me. People need to realize that it takes money to make these shows happen. Unfortunately it's like everything else in life... prices go up.

I think its partly because there are too many shows in ontario. Are they up to what 12 now with the provincial shows? Because there are more shows, each individual show becomes smaller as there are many other options to choose from. Here in NS, there is only 1 show. Its the show to do, and we had over 200 entries in the show. Membership fees here are somewhere around 30$ and entry fee around the same. (oddly enough people still complain about the expense). But because the show is so huge, the profit margins are higher, and therefore entry fees and membership fees can remain low. Plus, more athletes per show = more tickets sold per show. If you aren't selling out a venue, or close to it, the show shouldn't exist

Yes, the population is larger in ontario - but have 12 times the contests is silly if you ask me! Better off having only 1 show per 'region' and the natural show could be a single show, provincials only. Just my 2 cents.

Stratford had around 175 competitors - hardly a small show. Audience was stacked. Seems to me that the OPA is doing it right.

i thought it was... I was talking more about the other shows that might not draw as many competitors / fans. I've been away from Ontario for a couple years, so out of the loop - but I know since I left they increased the show numbers. I can only assume the membership and registration fees are only to ensure no loss from a financial standpoint. Personally it wouldn't matter if membership is 500$. If I am going to compete, I am going to compete. Not everyone shares that thought though as there will always be people complaining when it comes to money... Some people complain out here because we "jacked up" the night show prices to 35 from 25. Still peanuts in my mind to watch (support!) your fellow athletes / friends who have been training their asses off for so long.

Obviously some shows are a hit, or more of a hit than others. Mostly because you have better promoters for some shows compared to others. And some shows will remain popular by tradition. I think all shows will become more popular with the addition of men's physique. was something like 20-30 guys in the first NS show to have men's physique. Personally think its a great addition.
