So my physician told me that I apparently have either a partial or complete tear of the medial cartilage/meniscus. I am being referred to a surgeon. From what I've read there is a chance I won't have to have surgery if the tear isn't too bad. I have resumed training for the last three weeks with light weights progressively getting heavier and stronger, with no pain or swelling afterwards so I am guessing it's a partial tear. 6 plates per side on the leg press and 225 for squats. Way off what I normally do but I hadn't trained legs for over 2 months until three weeks ago.The only problem seems to be some clicking sounds and the feeling as though it may wanna lock. Having said that there is a possibility that the surgeon may want to snip and clip. Has anyone undergone meniscus surgery and what were the results? **** me I've had a run of shit luck. Just got my elbow drained and cortisone shot for bursitis. Haven't been able to press anything for six weeks now. Just back, bis and light legs.

I see at least 2 a week. Any specific questions?

That was quick. Yeah, if I was to have surgery to repair the meniscus about how long before I could resume training , not including rehab ? Do you find that most people are able to resume at the same loads they attained previous to injury? At the present time I do not know where the tear is , if it's on the outer part of the meniscus where blood supply is relatively good I should do well. If it's inside then I explore the PRP option. Do you know anyone who has used PRP with any success? Thanks in advance.

I've had it and a few other goodies as well. Double knee surgery last December.

The problem is MRI's aren't always conclusive (as mine weren't and I had 3) so he won't fully know until he gets in there. Pain is not always a symptom of a full or partial tear.

Training really depends on a bunch of variables. What exactly he has to do, how fast you heal, and what therapy you do post-op. Your surgeon and therapist will work with you on a post-op recovery plan

There are 3 zones to miniscus - Red-Red, Red-White and White-White. White-White is on inside - if there is a tear there the doc will most likely just cut it out - not likely to heal due to limited blood supply. I don't see PRP doing it any good. Other 2 zones are repairable with sutures.
Not sure about recovery...I can ask the doc next time I'm a case. I don't do followup.
If your miniscus is damaged you may have some cartilage damaged also.
As Nate mentioned MRI's don't always show it all. The doc will have to go in and confirm - then repair once he can see what the problem is.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I guess I'll know more if and when he decides to go exploring.
