As bodybuilders, it is vital that we provide our bodies with as much nutrients and vitamins as possible. To aid in this, we also use OTC supplements.
Unfortunately, these OTC supplements have negative effects on our bodies, mainly our liver, kidneys, heart, and digestive system.
Compound that with the effects of alcohol consumption, and you could potentially be doing as much internal damage as someone who is supplementing with oral vitamin t.
If you have ever gotten your blood panel done, which you should be doing every 3-4 months if you’re serious about training, you’ll probably notice that you’re on the upper end of the tolerance limits. But that’s to be expected, since you’re not an “average” person, you are someone who puts a serious amount of strain on your insides.
Fortunately, there are lots of herbal remedies/supplements which can help reduce the effects of these supplements, as well as provide preventative therapy.
I propose we sticky this thread, or create a new one, to list which herbs/sups are good for keeping our bodies healthy while we pump them full of chems.
Before contributing, please do research to make sure we can obtain the herbs/supplements you are going to reccomend. There is no point in suggesting elephant tusk extract for the liver...use your common sense lol.
Liver
Milk Thistle – The essential for liver care. A favourite among BB’ers, it helps liver enzymes rebuild and flush out the toxins in the liver. There are no records of overdose, so take generously. Probably 1 or 2 caps with every meal throughout the day.
Alpha-Lipolic-Acid – Good for the liver and a whole bunch of other internal organs. Usually stacked with the Milk Thistle for optimum results.
Dehydrated Dessecated Liver – In pill form, this stuff actually rebuilds your liver from the inside out. Recommended dosage is 6-10 pills a day (you get 1.5g protein per pill as well) on a empty stomach. Just pop them like candy.
Heart
Hawthrone Berry – Helps relieve blood pressure, take it in large doses leading up to the workout.
Garlic Extract – Helps control cholesterol, take it throughout the day with increased doses before the workout.
L-Arginine – Helps expand blood vessels and that reduces the blood pressure. Take immediately before/during a workout, 4-5 grams.
CoEnzyme Q10 – Relieves BP, take 150 mg in the morning and 150mg one hr before workout.
Niacin – Helps control BP, take no more than 500mg before workout. Expect a “flush” feeling, kindof uncomfortable. Also not very easy on the stomach in the long run.
Potassium – Helps flush out sodium. Great for re-hydrating your body. Drink lots of water if you’re also using creatine. Take 50mg in the morning and 50mg one hour before workout.
Kidneys
Dandelion – A diuretic, great for flushing out the kidneys. Be careful to drink lots and lots of water if you’re using creatine or potassium.
Digestive Tract/Stomach
Digestive Enzyme Complex – Pre-fabricated pills, you can pick them up at any pharmacy under the brand name “Digestive Enzymes”. Help break down food.
SAMe – not sure exactly. Quote “Some studies have suggested that SAM-e possesses anti-inflammatory and tissue-healing properties that may help protect the health of joints, and perhaps may lessen pain”
Colostrum – present in milk, helps with stomach lining
Digestive Bitters Tonic – helps rebuild the mucosa (lining of the stomach)
