I never tried this, simply because I got those minerals and this vitamin into my daily supplements and don't see the relevance to take the same stuff in one isolated compound! Do I miss something ?

Thanks

I like taking it before bed- helps with getting a deeper sleep

Most people are deficient in zinc so it usually does help.

OK but if zinc's (and everything else) supplementation is good then it's not really needed as I understand. If one was to add too much zinc it could block copper absorption and lack of cooper means iron absorption diminished either, right ?

Yes too much is not good but that is the same with everything...balance is the key. You can do a zinc tally test to see...

Zinc Tally Testing

These days zinc deficiency is almost endemic in our society. Its depletion is associated with diabetes, eating disorders, food sensitivities & allergies, recurrent infections, delayed wound healing, arthritis, hair loss, skin disorders like eczema, infertility, depression insomnia, learning and behavioural disorders.

Zinc is important for so many enzyme systems ranging from liver function to DNA synthesis, serotonin production, sex hormone production, insulin production, stabilization of the histamine response, immune cell production and those that prevent free radical overload in your body. Just to name a few! Zinc is required for the production of tummy acid (hydrochloric acid) that is essential to break down your food and extract all the goodness from it. Thus zinc depletion is the cornerstone of many nutritional deficiencies. Are you deficient in zinc?? Then take the zinc tally test today!

You don't have to guess, or pay for a laboratory test to see if you are zinc deficient. Zinc Tally was developed as a "taste test" for zinc adequacy. By following the directions on the label you can tell from day to day whether or not you need more zinc. You may then choose to supplement zinc with this liquid readily absorbable form or you may want to take a zinc capsule daily & periodically test your zinc status with Zinc Tally.

How the test works

You must not eat, drink, or smoke less than one hour before the test. Then take the equivalent of a liqueur glass of the fluid and rinse your mouth with the fluid for 5-10 seconds, after which you can either swallow or spit it out. Four different flavours now appear:

No flavour or "like water" = typical zinc deficiency
No flavour to begin with, but later a reaction occurs described as either "dry", "fluffy","mineral", "like baking powder" or "sweet" = zinc deficiency
A strong but not necessarily unpleasant flavour is registered immediately and builds up little by little = no zinc deficiency.
An unpleasant flavour is registered immediately. The test person makes a wry face and wants to rinse his mouth with water = no zinc deficiency, good zinc status.

Ah great! I'm gonna do the test! Thanks for the tip.

One more thing I was wondering about ZMA, it's been told not to take it with Calcium and preferably on a empty stomach.

Problem is my last protein shake is MPI and Isolated whey since I'm lactose intolerant, but MPI is so full of Calcium, 2 scoops of MPI contains 55g of protein, but also 1360mg of calcium (136% RDA), this is why I'm cutting it with whey, 50% whey, 50% MPI + olive oil and fibers to slow down digestion, since with all other supplements and food I would be near 250% of the Calcium RDA...

So beside MPI, is there another source of slow digested protein that is not full of calcium and without lactose that I could try for the last shake before bedtime ? (I unable to eat food at 11pm)

And what do you think of having +2000mg of calcium everyday ?

Thanks again.

What is MPI...mil protein isloate? if so save your money and get whey isolate...much better. I posted a protein study on this prior and the whole beef, milk protein isolate is marketing...whey isolate is the standard and has many studies to back it up. Supposedly high calcium intake can reduce zinc absorption by 50%...but that is an old study on menopausal women.
Switch to whey isolate and you dont have a problem.

The protein comparisons thread is actually the reason I began to take MPI! Maybe I got it wrong, but it seemed to me as a very good option :

''MY PICK FOR BEST PROTEIN––Separating Marketing Spin from Real World Application
As you might have already guessed, when it comes to commercially available protein supplements MY OVER-THE-COUNTER PRESCRIPTION IS TO spend your money on the milk proteins. The whey isolates and concentrates are perfectly suited to enhance the “signaling effect” on muscle protein synthesis. Most importantly, properly processed milk protein isolates and or concentrates (MPI or MPC) contain native proteins that include casein micelles (think of the curd in cottage cheese). Upon ingestion these micelles expand in the gut, creating a time-released effect, much like eating whole food/tissue protein.

Native Milk Proteins (MPI and MPC) contain 80% casein and 20% whey, just like that found in nature, and therefore deliver the best combination of amino acids AND release kinetics to initiate and maximize the process of muscle protein synthesis.''

Whey is the protein I take all day long, breakfast, pre and post workout. I take MPI only before bedtime for it's slow absorption ability (and no lactose)!

Is olive oil and fibers are enough to slow down absorption for a whey shake before bedtime ? My guess it's help slowing down, but maybe not enough to be comparable to Casein (?).

Thanks

Eric

What would be the normal dosage for ZMA per day ? Thing to watch here is that some other supplements / vitamins also contain Zinc so don't want to over / under supp ???

Just follow the dosage on the label.
