View Full Version : DK's (temporary) switch to Mens Physique for 2012

Well 16 weeks in a few days from the Mississauga Championships on May 19th and i've made the choice to hit the stage along with many of my clients for the new mens physique class. Bodybuilding (and the quest for MASS) is on hold (temporarily). It'll be fun to compete with 4 other guys who i'm prepping for this show so looking forward to it. I'm not holding my breath as to the results i expect, this one will be more for fun. Although back in 2009 when i won the provincials...Mark Anthony Wingson was second place and he's now an IFBB pro in this new division, so to some degree i hope that i show well.
Let the prep begin. Currently i'm weighing 200lbs (usually offseason i'd be 220 to 230 at this point)---i competed at Nationals in Montreal at 187 so i'm not far off where i'd like to be.
I was trying to find pics of me in boardshorts and the only ones i could find were from 2007 (time certainly flies by quick)
Newer pics will be added soon (but i need to shave this hair sweater i'm wearing first) lmao

Thanks guys...transitioning diet wise this week slowly. Best workouts of my offseason the last 2 weeks though. Firing on all cylinders and weights are finally getting back up where they used to be when i was fat lol. Although this time lean.
Trying to figure out how lean to get seems to be the issue. I'll probably just get as diced as usual and try my best not to flex anything except abs. Practicing my little walk and twisting side stance (feels gay)...next i ll be getting facials, mani/pedi's and frosted highlights (not) lmao.

I would say as lean as you are couple weeks out is plenty...these guys are still faily lean. You just don't need to come in ultra dehydrated. Basically, it becomes kinda fun...no sodium manipulation, no diuretics, just wake up looking the way you normally do at a very lean state, and just skip out on drinking water the day of the show. At least that is my opinion on the whole thing. Some guys who succeed are probably not even as lean as you are today - it really all depends! But those guys carry less muscle, and therefore need a little bit more bodyfat to not look invisible on stage. Same stuff can be said for the girls who compete in figure, or bikini...some need to be lean, others look better with a bit of chunk

Still no cardio sessions at all :D

Looks good! I honestly think you don't need to get too much leaner too. Fun eh?! I know its hard to change the mindset, but you really hold your bodyfat well in terms of what (i think) they are looking for. A little water depletion and I think you're basically about there! Keep holding off on the cardio as long as you can!

I think this is a good switch for you....I like the new division and I think it brings a whole new dynamic to shows. Just don't get too lean - sounds funny I know but you look close to ready now! It's sometimes hard to realize that ripped-er and bigger isn't necessarily better. It was a tough thing for me to come to terms with at first but it is fun to prep in a healthier more athletic way.

Best of luck!

Hey guys, 6 weeks out yesterday. My dry morning bodyweight is down to 191.2lbs and i'm in my best condition since the 2010 Canada's where i weighed in at 172lbs. So pretty near 20lbs of stage weight if i were to compete today. (and i wouldn t have any problems competing today) i was trying to find my camera but i think my 2 boys-8 and 9 yrs old were playing with it last and i can t find that thing anywhere so i did get one of those douchebag self camera phone pics in the bathroom mirror which i ll post up once i figure out how to tranfer it off. No flash and 3.2mp phone cam so i m not expecting it to look like the real me (although it does look good on the small phone screen). On another note, not only is it Easter sunday but it's also my birthday....i celebrate my 29th-------(for the 9th time lol) Weirdly enough i feel like i'm peaking now when most of the guys my age are looking real rough. Fitness and health, bodybuilding and competing have all helped me to stay young and feel young.

Are you finding this prep much easier than prepping for a bodybuilding show ?

Delt King

Are you finding this prep much easier than prepping for a bodybuilding show ?

This prep is only easier because i stayed low carb in my offseason and below 10%bf. I gained a decent amount of lean muscle and really it was a very easy transition into the prep as i just started cycling my fats. No cardio was needed. Didn't need to drop 50lbs of bodyweight either thankfully. I've lost 10lbs and i could compete in a bodybuilding show in this condition...if i pump up and flex it's pretty amazing how much things pop now. even my glutes are fully striated...although with wearing board shorts everything is covered.

The difficult time i'm having is balancing being cut with NOT being grainy and vascular. The last couple days i have been way to hard and grainy. Today i'm increasing carbs to see how that changes my physique. I'd like to be more full. With 5 weeks to go and basically ready it's a matter of fine tuning the look at this point. I stopped training legs really hard 2 weeks ago so expect some atrophy there and bodyweight will drop a bit more.

In all honesty i've never been as focused on a goal...and that goal is to be Canada's next IFBB pro come August. :fwave
Hoping the judges see things as i do. lol But one show at a time at this point.

Delt King
16-04-2012, 11:24 AM
Figuring out and attaining the look the judges are looking for is not going to be easy. At the IFBB level they're sending a clear message that too big, or too ripped, too shredded will not win. Take a look at the 1st place and 8th place finishers in the show from this weekend. (Matt in black shorts was 8th) He won a pro show earlier when he was less hard.

I felt like i was too grainy on friday so this sunday i carb loaded (maybe a bit too much) now i feel too smooth although more full. Glad there's time to adjust and see what will work. 34 days and counting down.

aznaro8
16-04-2012, 01:26 PM
Reminds me kind of like the women's physique and not really knowing what they are looking for. Personally I would rather have Matt's look

Talo
19-04-2012, 11:14 PM
Dont stress out about it to much just do what you know you can do. Like you said it's going to be hard to know what the judges want so just bring you best.

Delt King
20-04-2012, 08:18 AM
Well the extra carbs didn't work to smooth me out or get less (grainy) but really the opposite happened as i filled out with glycogen and basically inflated drastically. At one point after my workout i went to the change room to see what was happening as i felt huge and the look i had can only be described as pure bodybuilder. Holy Eff was i big and round and ripped...the opposite look that i was aiming for. lol So back to the drawing board, some "supplement" changes to start asap and cutting workouts drastically down in volume and intensity. Cut carbs back down also and increased fat.

Not too worried as the regional and provincial show should be fairly non competitive i think. Just have to nail the right condition for the National event on Aug 11th. Booked a cool suite for the Mississauga show, filled out my registration, got my OPA membership card, tanning supplies and feeling pretty damn good. Tried 5 minutes on cardio (treadmill) last night and legs cramped bad. Tried bike for a couple minutes...cramped again. Gave up cardio and went home for some Taurine,
lmao (major cardio fail) :giveup.
Reminds me of my 2009 Provincial prep when i didn't do cardio either and was also ready a month out.

29 days to go!!!;)

I am wondering if the tiny waist will ultimately be what defines this class.

Delt King
24-04-2012, 08:20 PM
25 days to go. Stopped working out everything but chest and abs...and that's higher rep than usual. Increased time between meals to 6 hours instead of 3hours. Yup trying to be catabolic. As much as i love the way i look now...i'm thinking it's not going to get me the placing i want.
Weirdest thing in the world doing this. Bodybuilding is fairly simple. Get as big as possible and as ripped as possible. Physique for me is alien.
Hoping this works.;)

Yup. I don't get it either. Judging from those two guys in the pics I'd say the key to winning is to stop training legs entirely. Why even bother if you are wearing board shorts? Jersey Shore has taken over bodybuilding. Pathetic. DK has a damn good build for bbing too. If I had his genetics I'd stick with bbing. Shoulders that wide are wasted with board shorts. But best of luck in any endeavours I always say.

28-04-2012, 04:28 PM
Thanks for the input guys. I love bodybuilding, it's where my heart is at. It's funny i'm a man of very few words as my close friends will attest to. If i haven't got anything important to say i just don't say anything. Yet get me talking about bodybuilding and i turn into a motor mouth.

I started working out very young with my Dad and it's been 30 yrs now banging iron. Seeing pics of huge bodybuilders like Arnold and Lou back in the day and later on Flex Wheeler, Shawn Ray, Dorian Yates and so on, i've been hooked and obsessed ever since. My goal was to always look like those guys.

I've managed to achieve a look much like Frank Zane and i'm happy with that big time but the sport has progressed so far beyond that level that to achieve IFBB pro status is ultimately a goal that is unreachable for me.

My competitive spirit drives me to want to achieve the highest levels and Men's physique seems to be a way to get to that level (IFBB pro)

The last 2 weeks changing things up to become softer and losing muscle is so against my nature so i'm stopping that BS and going back to my old training style. Can't wait to hit the gym in a couple hours and kill the weights. Muscle memory will bring me back to where i was quickly and then it's just a matter of losing another 2-3lbs of fat. 3 weeks out today. Bringing the "delts" back in DELTKING.

So now you have a little insight into my psyche.

I am driven to succeed.

vytis
28-04-2012, 06:51 PM
Hey DK I think that your approach to go back to your BBing training is the way to go - no need to try to get "soft" or lose size IMO. The way that you'll present yourself as a Physique competitor, in your posing and flexing on stage, will ultimately dictate how successful you'll be.

Go kill it...:)

Well this was the easiest prep of my competitive career. everything went according to plan. the end result of the way i looked is likely the best of my life. dumping 10lbs of muscle was a hard pill to swallow but i did what i thought needed to be done. the reality is that my frame and structure is made for bodybuilding. I'll post up pics of the morning show tonight. it will be pics of what NOT TO LOOK LIKE. I've never been so disappointed in a showing. its back to the drawing board aka the gym. train for fun, train for health. train to be happy with how i look. DK, your physique was very comparable to the top pro's for sure. The thing about this physique division is that presentation is everything. It's just like it is for us girls, the girl with the best physique in figure or bikini usually doesn't win. It's more a sport about learning how to stand, walk, smile, and stand out somehow without looking like a phoney or looking too over the top. In all pic's I saw you were not smiling, smiling with teeth showing is a must in these presentation sports. Also the perfect tan and shine is so important. From the pic's looks like your colour could have been better. I am being critical and don't mean to offend. When I started competing I did not place well. I haven't really changed my physique much but I have improved my presentation by a million. I know it sounds sucky, but our work in the gym and dieting can always be beat by the girl or guy who naturally shines on stage. Just the nature of a judged, subjective sport.

Dont let it bother you G...its not your passion and your heart is BB...there is much more going on in MPD then judging the best body..if that were happening you would have won easily...just look at the Pro comps...brutal.

Take some time off...recharge and hit the gym for yourself...dont think about competing just about training and doing what you love...if the competition spirit is still there it will show up on its own.

I've seen 2 shows with this in it now and I'm still going to call it mens bikini....the most muscled guys who are usually a bit older are not winning. The winners are a younger sleek looking build that are very balanced but not real hard...like you were....someone said it above you looked like a BBer and not an underwear model...it is unfortunate but next show I see could be totally different as I don't think anyone knows, judges included, what exactly the winning look is going to be "consistently"..in fact, best advice for anyone is when this comes on if you are a BB fan...take a pee break...get back in the leg press and squat rack DK...you're a BBer...imo this has no place in the shows under a BB title and we should send it over to model search etc but it is a huge cash cow for the sport so it's here to stay

You are a bodybuilder not a fitness model bro. You tried to put a round peg in a square hole, and failed.

really what is fitness anyway? These guys are young boys not fully developed yet parading in their board shorts on stage. There is a limited number of shows one can do before it gets really boring, and the desire to gain more size kicks in. Isn't bodybuilding about continually improving one's physique, its the quest of an ideal that is extremely difficult to obtain? Fitness modelling? I had that look down by the time I was 23, I'm sure you did too.
And bro, to sum up, that's what they are looking for. 23 year olds prancing around in their board shorts, not 37 year olds. Not worth your time.

Agreed!

you are a bodybuilder not a fitness model bro. You tried to put a round peg in a square hole, and failed.

You're too manly for physique DK lol I don't think I could stand on stage and try to act pretty. If I were to take that route I'd be getting paid to be a model
