Just got word that the IFBB and the CBBF have banned Dream Tan from being used at their competitions.

Good call...the athletes that wear were having difficulty with it running and wiping off...and it was gross looking on stage.

I heard this as well... Check with your own provincial organizations to see if the ban is taking effect for the early 2012 season. I know NSABBA has decided not to ban it this year - although will likely implement for the 2013 provincials.

Sounds like a scam for the "spray tanners" to make $$
they probably paid off the federation to be exclusive. kinda like the no SLR camera's at the show!! that is so bullshit!

The camera thing is bs but the no dream tan is good it looks like complete crap and gets everywhere. If it was a cash grab they would say no protan etc.

But protan won't give you enough colour for the stage. You'd still be bottlenecked into using a spray for stage colour. If you had LOTS of choices for spray, then no problem, competition is fine. What if you have only one? Or a couple? Monopolies can charge whatever they want; you still have to use it (unless there's some conceivable alternative??). Competing is expensive already.

I know a number of people who always have only used Jan Tana products, rather than the pro-tan dream tan combo.

All I ever use is Pro Tan, works great when you know what your doing.

It takes more time but it works for sure you can do it with just protan and a bit of a base.

Also I have my own air brush tanning system so guess it's not a concern of mine who to go to and how much they charge.

Dream tan can look great under certain lights, especially really bright lighting. If your doing the CBBF nationals this year, I will warn you that if you just use protan, your likely not gonna be dark enough. The lights at the venue are VERY bright.

The problem with Dream Tan is that people put too much on and they also apply it to their face. Never put DT on the face - it looks stupid. When I tanned my tanning clients at the Nationals I used 1 bottle of DT for about 5 guys. You need a base when using DT and then you apply DT just to give the physique some sheen - do not use it for color. It's great for touch ups also. It will be interesting to see how the CBBF handles this ban. They say that if it rubs off you can't use it. All the products will rub off once an oil is applied.
As for the recent official tanner deal in Ontario. Very unfair. Ron didn't go out and solicit bids in the best interest of the OPA. He took the first offer. I know both Cherry and I were not even informed of a bid process (because none existed). My wife and I were the first in Ontario to do spray tans - do you think the OPA could give us a shout and see if we were interested? Nope.
Oh well no probs with us. While the official tanners are charging clients $125+ for a tan (because they will have to pay their exclusivity fees) we will be offering it for $85ish. Great way to save a couple of bucks!
I think the competitors should have the choice of who they want to tan them. Once again the OPA proves they are so far removed from competition and the athlete gets screwed over again. What do you think the OPA will say when competitors are turning green because of Jan Tana? The competitor gets marked down because of a shit tan job and there's nothing they can do about it.

How it's applied makes a big difference in how DT looks. If you've got a very good base then a little will go a long way to giving you the final touch. I would imagine the ban might have more to do with protecting the venues than anything else.

My points exactly as well. Unless there's a work-around, like Sean's offering, then everyone is bottlenecked into using whoever the organization decides to allow (if you want to step up on stage that is). With DT or similar, or even multiple entrepreneurs offering spray, I can CHOOSE whom I wish to use; I can shop around. I would not necessarily have to pay a FIXED PRICE that is more-or-less mandatory. And if someone did a crappy job, they're likely not coming back next year but I'm stuck with their crappy job if I've not got some CHOICES.

I have been using Jan Tana since 2 years and it did a great job. My ex boyfriend is a bodybuilder and he was putting 3 coats of Jan Tana and it was enough dark on CBBF stage.

lol that's weird. either way i think jan tana spray tan looks better. the dream tan can be very nice (dark) but it's so blotchy and hides lines. it also takes weeks of destroying your skin to remove lol.

Ive used the Jan Tana spray an at the North Americans and it was ok but ive had better colour doing it myself. When SS did my colour at the Nationals is was by far better then Jan Tana...deeper richer brown colour not so greenish orange as Jan Tana looks. A little bit of DT for sheen and touch ups and I was good. At the Ontarios i used SS's product Liquid Sun Rayz at home and did it myself and was impressed with the colour...much better than protan...and it comes off easier.

The CBBF's official word about this:

The IFBB has banned all tans that can be wiped off. An official will check the tan of all athletes backstage and if the tan comes off by simply wiping, the athlete will be told to remove the tan before going on stage.

The CBBF's official word about this:

retarded!

remove the tan before going on stage? ? Do they not realize the amount of time, effort and discipline it takes to get ready for a show? You get there and some CBBF so-called expert telling you to wipe your tan off minutes before stepping on stage. Where does that leave the competitor who has invested his or her time for months getting ready for the show? go on stage with zero tan and get washed out in the lights = wasting all that hard work getting ready for the show, or go home and avoid the embarasment.

This could happen for the ones who use the OFFICIAL spray tanners too. It could run and the so called expert once again tells them no you cant go on.

This is a very touchy banning I feel. Far more negatives then positives

I've used 10 to 15 coats of protan before and believe me when you oil up...tan smears all over the place. Then you're spending time patting down to even things out. If you swipe your finger across my skin though you'll have tan on your finger. How is this expert really going to know what you put on?
I've also used a dream tan spray base 7 to 10 coats then used a light layer of dream tan cream in the morning of the show at the hotel...once it's kind of set i put my black sweats on then when i peel off it's just a matter of re-oiling up, and the dream tan cream is fairly set (not like i just slapped it on 5 minutes before stage time.) So there's no way of telling which method i used.
People just need to stop going in the morning of the show white as a ghost and using only dream tan at the last minute...this method doesn't produce visually appealing results as it streaks like crazy everywhere you touch your skin.

JanTana ALL THE WAY! That sh$@! is amazing, and so easy to apply! I always do my tan myself, and it ends up looking better than the people who payed over $100 for their spray tans, and I only pay like $20 something for a bottle...plus I can do my own touch ups back stage!
