A friend was asking about the HCG Diet. Anyone tried it? I'm not one for gimmicks.... I'm old school, so I'm skeptical. Clean up your diet and count your calories. Results will come.

I believe it limits your cals to 500 a day. Way to low for anyone, however you will lose weight but it's not the hcg causing the weight loss

The HCG typically being sold as "drops" for this diet are not actual HCG. HCG is a peptide hormone so taking it orally means it would get broken down by the stomach and rendered ineffective.
Furthermore, with only 500 calories this is basically a starvation diet. Yes you will lose weight, but at what cost? There are not enough calories being eaten to maintain their current muscle base, so some of the weight lost will also be muscle. Then when somebody starts eating again and regains weight, they will have an even higher bf% than when they started.

I was talking to my Dr. about this diet, what he told me was the HCG hormone is found in pregnent women. When women are pregnent the hormone is released by the body to feed off of stored fat. HCG is administered via daily injection or drops under the tongue. The body is supposedly feeding off of stored fat and is getting in excess 3500 colories per day. so apparently eventhough your intake is 500-800 calories you being fed 3500 to almost 4500 calories a day. Please dont take this with a grain of salt but that is basically how he explained it to me. A few of our clients have been on the diet, this is how I enitially heard about it, and the food they were eating was incredible. the one lady had a chicken fried rice dish but insead of rice she used shredded cauliflower. she let me taste it and it was scrumptious. they all told me that the et more now then before, they are eating smarter, and cleaner.

Bullcrap! I have see the diet first hand...it runs 500 to 800 calories and HCG has nothing to do with fat loss. Muscle loss will occur and lean body mass will drop...weight gain after cessation of the diet is dramatic and normally results in gaining back all the weight lost plus more.

HCG doesn't burn fat. It's used to blunt one's hunger while trying to survive on 500-750 cals.

I know a guy at work that was 350lbs + and did this diet and lost about 55lbs so far.

His problem was he couldn't be convinced to do any exercise at all.

Does it make you lose weight? Yes ofcourse.

Is it healthy? no. Will you regain the weight you lost once you start eating again? Most likely you will gain it all back and then more. That remains to be seen in his case as he is still dieting.
