What a sad day this is for our community. I have know Darren for over 10 years as his co-worker, his manager, and his friend. Very few people had his passion for this sport, his eye for movement, and his willingness to share his knowledge.

RIP Big D. We will miss you dearly.

Wow he seemed to be pretty young and in good health. I wonder what the cause was. My condolences to his friends and family. He seemed like a good guy and a wicked trainer.

Looks like he passed in his hotel room. No cause known yet, some speculation, but nothing solid. Been talking with a lot of people we knew through the industry. Absolute shock and sadness.

Lets not spread false facts here. Post-mortum toxicology tests generally take 3-6 weeks to be confirmed so there was no way you can say his system was clean.

I'm not saying it wasn't just that we shouldn't be shouldnt be making assumptions.

I also heard he was sick for a few weeks prior as well and a friend is saying cause of death was an enlarged heart with a blockage. What ever the cause it's sad he was someone that had a lot of passion for his clients and the sport of bodybuilding. I never seen him without a smile on his face at the gym always pushing people to the max.

He could have 'thought' he was having pnemonia when in fact he was really in heart failure. Too bad. irregardless what a tradgedy.

Unfortunately since I started working cardiology, I have seen more young people then I ever thought I would comming in with 90% blocked Left main coronary arteries and triple vessel disease, needing bypass at such a young age. It's surprising! I'm talking people in their late 30's, early 40's! It's mind blowing! and these people arent' bodybuilders. Trouble is people at that age have two things going against them: 1) they tend to be in denial that it is their heart that is giving them the pain and problems since they are so young, and delay seeking help. Time is muscle in an infarction, so the longer treatment is delayed the worse the prognosis...2) they are younger, and have not developed as much of the colateral circulation (small vessels that flow between coronary arteries that can help re-route blood past a blockage) that someone in their 70's or 80's would have, therefore an infarction to a coronary artery is much more devastating to the heart muscle.

If you have blockages, you wouldn't begin feel the effects of narrowing in the corronaries untill they are already 70% occluded!!! At that point an unstable plague could lesion, cause clot developement and there you have it! Its really a silent killer!

Prisoner, great info... This kind of stuff, life and death, we seem to pass over with our blinders to just get as big as possible, sometimes it's good to step back and reflect on the total health picture...

I didn't know Darren, but it's always sad when someone leaves so young... RIP

Here's a photograph of me and Darren Oliver at the 2011 Flex Invitational Bodybuilding Championships in Los Angeles, California. It reminds me of not just one of the best times I had with Darren but one of the best times I had in my life!

For those of you who don't know, Darren played an instrumental role in my win at this year's Canadian National Bodybuilding Championships. He trained me for the entire year leading up to Nationals. He believed in me as much, if not more than I believed in myself! And knowing the man that he was, it's safe to say that he made all his friends/clients feel the same way! I can only aspire to have the same influence on the people I train, as he had on me.
