View Full Version : Threads on cardio vs. working out at target heart rate?

I did a search and couldn't find any, but I'm sure they are here.

I'd like to read about doing traditional continuous cardio (biking, running, elipticaling <-----this is a word) vs. circuit training/weight lifting if both are done at the same heart rate and the rate is kept relatively steady. ie: If I find steady rate cardio tedious, can I get the same results working out high reps at a similar heart rate?

If anyone has any comments, would also be appreciated... or just point me to the obvious thread that was right under my nose.

Thanks.

Yes I would say you would get the same results when it comes to fat loss and cardio vascular benefits...however when it comes to building muscle the results will be pretty much zero.

^exactly. You will essentially be doing a p90x type program. Great for burning calories, but terrible for packing on muscle.

If you want to have fun with your cardio, play a sport. Doesnt have to be high impact either. Get a good game of squash or badminton going at your local rec centre and youll get a pretty good hour of cardio in if you and or your partner know how to play. I find cardio mind destroying as well, but when I do it on the stationary bike I can track my progress much more easily and really focus on my breathing and train my heart rate to be as low as possible, even on a relative sprint.
