Ok so I got a ear full today from My Nurse when I told her I'm taking in around 150g proetin a day. From what I've Learned it's needs to be anywhere from 1g-2g X Bodyweight. well 1g X 178Lbs = 178g protein a day. She told me that while need to keep my protein above 60g a day 178g a day is harming my kidney's. I'm lost in what I need to believe is right for me. Yes I had gastric Bypass 9 months ago, but I don't want to be a saggy bag of flab... I want to tone up and be come a solid rock of muscle, then get some of this loose skin removed if I have too.

What should i do??

My Protein sources a day are

1 protein shake made with skim milk in the AM on the way to work---39g Protein

AM Snack-- I can Tuna with 2 Tbsp Fat Free Mayo--32g Protein

Lunch -- 1 Chicken Breast, 1/2 cup green Veggies( Broc. or Green beans)---40g Protein

PM Snack-- 1 Pure Protein Shake --21g Protein
1--21g Pre Packages Marble Cheese----7g Protein

Dinner-- Salmon Fish and Salad Greens----?30-40g Protein

+ throughout the day I drink 2 Isopure plus Lite Protein juices 237ml each mixed with 8oz H2O. 15g protein each......plus I usually get in another 32oz H2O.mixed with Benefiber!!

So With Out touching Rice, pasta, breads, potatoes, crackers etc.....oh ya and eggs.... I think I'm doing good..... but maybe I'm wrong?!?!?

Please Help me--cause I'm afraid my nurse doesn't know much about bodybuilding and is mis-informed?

you re not overdoing the protein intake. the canada food guide is a bunch of bull that contributes to fat gain. i would make sure you have some healthy fats in your plan. half an avocadoe, handful of natural almonds, tsp of olive oil and fish oil (omega 3) supplements.

my response to those type of people is

the canadian food guide is simply a guide for average people, you cannot eat average and workout average and exceed average.

I weigh 135 and i take 160 grams per day.

I completely agree with Delt King. Your protein intake is fine. For women I like between 0.75 to 1.5g per lb per day depending on how active they are. The idea that protein will harm your kidneys is outdated if you have healthy normal working kidneys.

At What time should I add the Omega 3( Fish Oil )?

i would add it after each time you eat...start with 1-1000mg softgel cap (personally i use 3 per meal....yes 18 per day)

Is it even possible to consume under 60 grams of protein per day eating say, 2500 calories per day (which is probably on the low end of most of us here). For example...if I maintain at 3000 calories per day. 60 grams of protein would account for 8% of my total calories. Most foods have at least 8% protein. Even if I didn't eat any meat, tuna, eggs, milk, yogurt, fish, I would still have a hard time getting under 60 grams per day!!

Oatmeal & speghetti has 15% calories from protein...Most bread is over 10%. A potato is about 10%...

So if all you're eating in a day is gatorade, licorice, gummy worms, orange juice, crackers and ketchup, then maybe you'd have healthy kidneys...But for the majority of the healthy population who eat a couple servings of meat, veggies, milk, yogurt everyday, I guess we can say goodbye to their kidneys...And I am afraid that most everyone on this board are already in need of a transplant!

I can't beleive this stuff is still embedded in many health professionals minds. We flew to the moon 40 years ago, and now today, when every teenager is walking around with a super computer in their backpockets, we still have an overwhelming portion of society who still think protein is bad for you.

Reminds me of 10 years ago in an intro to nutrition class in university, my final exam had questions why protein is bad for you. I formulatted my response to the effect of "while I don't beleive the following, here is what I was told in class / and in my textbook"

I personally take 3g of fish oil with breakfast and 3g with supper. I take 1g caps that contain 300mg of Omega3. The upper limit has recommended by Health Canada is about double what I take, I can't seem to find the link right now.

Since you had the gastric bypass I would agree with DK, in that you should split them up 1 per meal so you have better absorption.

Also, since you had the bypass listen to your doctor for vitamins, some people might tell you to use less but since it goes through you so fast, so little is absorbed.

Ok so I'll add 1x1000g fish oil to each of my 5-6 meals.

Ya when you have gastric bypass..your pouch is only a 1-2 tbsp big so you eat so litttle, and your never hungry.... a couple of bites or sipps and your done! and you CAN NOT drink while you eat cause it will flush it through your into your intestinal tract too quickly and you get dumping syndrome. Most RNY pateins struggle to get in over 500-800 cals a day. for the last 9 months I would only drink Tea all morning then have a small salad or soup for lunch and then nothing until dinner...about 1/2 - 1 cup of soup of something alond those lines.....thats why I tend to do alot of shakes.. I can get in more fluids then real foods. We also have to eat slowly or food gets stuck---takes me 1 hr to eat my real food meals and they are only about a cup of food. We also don't absorb cause the bypass bypasses most of the first part of out small intestinal tract....thats why we are carb, sugar sensitive.

Thanks Guys.... I knew you'd all understand and help me out!! Heres to a better body!! Solid like a rock :)

just realized this was for a girl...so my calorie assumpition is a little high...But even still, at 1500 calories a day give or take, it isn't hard to get to 60 grams of protein! I'd say anything between 100-150 should be totally fine.
