View Full Version : Gym behaviour I find irritating...

These happen with such unbelievable consistency, I cant help but start a thread about it. I cant wait until the day that I can afford a fully functioning home gym...

Compression fit under armour - Are you serious? Wear something thats not meant for UNDERneath your equipment (hence the UNDER Armour name). You look like a try hard dbag, and no you dont look jacked in your medium.

People who "forget" their water bottle every single day - I see a lot of the same people in the gym day in and day out, and I cant help but notice some dudes taking their sweet ass time on machines and weights because they have to walk to fountain to get a drink and check themselves out in the mirror while they flex the whole time. Now I get to wait extra long for you on every trip. Its unreal dumb to not bring a water bottle. Even cavemen figured out how to transport water in a container for convenience. Youre such a ****ing dbag, ****.

Those are the two most annoying things I can think of right now. I will post more later.

People that stop at the water fountain and read every article around it blocking my way to the water, then the folks waiting on me for the equipment get pissy because i take to long getting my water from the fountain....Those readers usually stink of bad BO, and i have to wait even longer to refrain from gagging while getting a drink of hi quality H2O....

2 years ago, I broke my foot because some 16 yo but a 25lbs plate on top of the smith machine (last pin, where you put the 2.5-5lbs plates...). **** it hurted. The guy heard me screaming and left the gym when it happened and he never came back. Couldn't train legs for 2 months, and squat for 3-4months.

I hate this guy so much. I hope I won't see him in the near future.

Dont forget the squat rack curlers. A guy actually kicked me out of the squat rack he wasnt using yet so he could get his curls on. I proceeded to give it up and squat 420 next to him while he curled 90lbs with horrific form. He didnt have the balls to say anything after that. I did though.....lol

I have no problem with people on cell phones. Just like cog said, there are reasons. What is unacceptable is talking on your phone during a set. I've seen it - 1 arm dumbell curls with the cell phone in the other hand. Another unacceptable use of cell phones, is being really loud, enough that you know what they are talking about - and going on for more than a few minutes.

Sure, if you're loud on the phone in the effect of 'oh my god, my son just cut his hand off I will be home in a minute' , sure....But no one wants to hear about the girl you nailed last night, or where you are going to smoke pot tomorrow night...That stuff doesn't need to be broadcasted in the gym while I am grunting out my last rep on a 500 pound squat. Thankfully, my in ear noise cancelling headphones block everything out. I hear nothing but my own music. Of course a few times people talk to me while I appear the stuck up bodybuilder - but essentially, thats what I am while I am training!

Mainly when people use the power or squat rack for stupid shit like barbell curls. Or ask for a spot benching a weight they can not handle and I end up having to assist every rep. If they want to delude themselves great but don't get me involved.

I simply tell them no. If I have to exert effort for their workout in a way which may impair my workout then that person is SOL

I was beginning to think this was an Ottawa exclusive. I think everybody but myself and my training partners are trying out for the UFC these days! The funny part is you know these guys are f'n pussies because one, they all have horrible form and two, the toughest SOB's I know you don't find out how well trained they are until it's too late. They gym is not a DoJo people! I've been training for 15 years and I've never been forced to lock in an omoplata on a dude between sets. Although I have threatened to stick 45lb plates through peoples skull, but that's generally where it ends.

Legit watched a guy shadow box with 15lb dumbbells not long ago. He is WELL known at my gym for having unbelievably bad ILS, as well as just looking like a downright massive dbag. Hes about 6'1, 180lbs max, but has the BIGGEST lats Ive ever seen (not at all). Its really messed up how guys actually walk around flared out like that when they look like long distance runners.

I had a guy at my university gym tell me he had 16 sets left in the rack. I looked at the bar loaded with a 10lb plate on each side then back at him and the bar again and in disbelief asked.... 16 sets of curls with that?

I walked away shaking my head only to come and kick him off. I went and grabbed some dumbells and premade curl bars and set them on the floor and told him to use those.

If a guy is curling a plate or more it doesnt really bother me but when doing some wimpish weights i tend to take exception lol

I guess im ok then....lol....I do curls in the rack, i do move if i see someone that looks like they actually workout, and want to squat etc.....But i usually am curling a 45lb plate and a 25 or 35 per side...I only use it for ease of drop sets and changing plates, plus im kind of lazy....:fwave

I saw a guy use chalk tonight to bench two plates. I am not against chalk I used it often to deadlift just never felt the need to use chalk on bench seems poserish especially at the weight he was using.

I get super irritated when people don't put things back as they should be dumbbells in the correct order etc. it really drives me nuts if it's a trainer and they are not putting things away correctly. You work there for cry out loud lead by example. I also hate when people don't wipe there sweat off the machine it just nasty.

I don't really have much of an issue with cell phones on the gym floor as long as it's not some how slowing down my workout. I know I text in between sets and I also log my workouts in my blackberry so can't really get annoyed with something I do.

I hate that one of the receptionist at my gym is a chain smoker or at least it seems like she is most nights I come in she is right out the front door smoking I guess that the price you pay for a small indy gym.

I don't bring a water bottle, I like the walk to the fountain to get my mind in it's place to lift my next set as heavy as I can.. I mark my bench or machine with my happy faced towels. I listen to my toons..do not look at people in the eye..I do not stop to chat unless it's at the end of my work out. Ya..my bench is marked by my towel...so come to me and ask, "Can I work in with you?"

I've actually offered a guy $1000 who squats 4 plates with 3" ROM to do to one full rep squat ass to grass. Told him $1000 was his if he could do just one rep. He said no because he was just finishing and legs were tired.

No problem I said, when's your next leg day and I'll make the same offer. He got annoyed and defensive.

I've never been "irritated" by the way other people do exercises. I find it funny that people could actually be annoyed. I have no idea what medical problems/limitations they have. I think this is more of a reflection on the person getting irritated than the person doing the exercise.

Now, if that person kept coming to me and saying how he lifts xxx and telling me how to do my workout, that would be different.

When you see some kid on the edge of disaster trying to squat with about twice what he could squat deep with it is irritating. You might be working in close proximity and you don't know in which direction he might collapse.Or if you should just step in and tell him to smarten up.

I completely agree with this. Working out can become stressful if there are consistently people there that you think you might have to save from breaking bones or crushing themselves. I just meant that when someone is not using proper form, or doing an exercise incorrectly but lifting more weight (in a non dangerous way), I more feel sorry that they haven't taken the time to educate themselves.

I think the thing I find most irritating is people who don't indicate that they are still on a machine/bench. If you walk away for over a minute, and you didn't leave anything near it/on it, how the hell am I supposed to know you are still using it?

Why do you care? Just use it. If you want to use equipment do a quick 360 trying to make eye contact with someone who might be using it. Can't find anyone well that's too bad. If they have the spine to tell me they are still using the machine then fine I'll move for a few sets.

This pissed me off.

Was doing squats in the rack last night. Go to grab a 25 off the side of the rack and a 5 pound plate falls off the top plate holder and lands on my right foot.

Some douche packed so many fives on there that the last one was barely on and decided to fall off right when my foot was under it. It was about a 6 foot drop and I was only wearing wrestling shoes. Hurt like a mother. I was ready to punch someone out but the culprit was long gone.

My Goodlife ****ing sucks and I only joined to get my wife interested. Only have 100lb dbs and the Hammer Strength stuff is stack loaded, not plate loaded. I used the whole stack on incline and it was the first time using one. I'm no beast either. The trainers are in decent shape but the reps are fat turds who smoke in front of the building.
