View Full Version : Multi vitamin Men VS Women
From Jerry Brainum
Iron supplements can be harmful when taken by men. Some researchers think that men shouldn't consume additional iron supplements due to the possibility of oxidation reactions induced by iron. Men should make the effort to find a multivitamin without iron since excess quantities can damage cell membranes leading to rapid aging and heart disease. When meat is consumed in the diet, men will receive adequate iron for normal metabolic function. Menstruating women can handle the iron because they release a portion of their iron stores regularly.
Most adult men (especially bb'ers) get enough iron from their diet. The reccomended dosage is 10mg a day for men.
Overconsumption (25mg+ a day) increases the risk of cancer dramatically over a longer period of time (2-3 years).
EDIT: Overconsumption also causes fatigue which some people may percieve as overtraining.
For the iron content of food you can check the following link:

Tank is right, dont supplement with iron, it'll do more harm than good.
As a Nutritionist here how iron works,i will tell you the real way and a quote from my book...
Iron in the Body...Iron that enters the mucosal cells of the small intestine can be bound to ferritin or picked up and transported in the blood to the liver, bones, and other body tissue by transferrin.Transferrin receptors on cell membranes bind to the transferrin-iron complex allowing it to enter the cell, where the iron is released for use. When iron is in short supply, less of the iron storage protein ferritin is made and the number of transferrin receptors increase, allowing more iron to be transported into the cells. When iron is plentiful, more ferritin is made to increase storage capacity and the number of transferrin receptors decrease,so the capacity to pick up iron from the mucosal cells and transport it into body cells reduced.Iron that is not picked up from mucosal cells is excreted in the feces along with mucosal cells when they die and are sloughed off into the intestinal lumen.Hope this helps.
