Another enforcer type has died. It seems like this is becoming common place. Heres to hoping that the true affects of concussions will be found before more die.

I think its getting closer but still has a ways to go..... The human head is not designed to be hit repeatedly.
Chris Benoit had the brain of an 80 year old Altheimer's patient according to his autopsy, what more do you really need to say?

Lots to say as why do some suffer worse than others?
Brain injuries are the most complex injuries you could ever have. We know so much about the human body but little about the brain. That said, wait til the autopsy beforejumping on the concussion bandwagon.
Pretty brutal whats happened over the last 4 months for sure. The guys in the NHL are just too big now and they move at unreal speeds. This isnt football or soccer where there are sidelines to escape to. Really unfortunate.

Ever played football before? Ever actually watched? There are more violent collisions in football than hockey. Theres a reason the average age of death for someone in the nfl is mid 50's.
Most dont run to the sidelines to avoid being hit. Pay closer attention to the game.
And soccer? Why are you bringing up soccer? Rofl
Nate, there is no doubt football is violent,I played but not to the level you did.An NFL doctor wrote a book about ten years ago, drug dosages for lineman made figures around here see minor.I'm certain this has something to do with it.Not too much running to the sidelines when a fullback comes at you full speed #8.Football players do have stronger necks though.

There is a point there, George Chuvalo comes to mind..... Guy is considered one of the toughest boxers of all times, at a time when the division was stacked..... Most of the guys he fought IE Ali, Frasier, Quarry wound up completely ****ed, but Chuvalo seems alright in his interviews.
How about yourself, you played football at a high level? How many documented concussions, and how did they affect you?

If I remember correctly Chuvalo was never knocked down. Take a look at the size of his head. I'm sure it's not quite this simple but maybe some people are just better equipped to get punched in the head.

Average speed of a football player is 19kph
Average speed of a hockey player is 32kph
Football hits may look worse, but hockey players get hit harder, more often. More speed= more kinetic energy.
I had far more hard collisions in football.

I don't have any experience playing either, but 30 years old is over the hill in football, hockey not so much..... The NFL regular season is only 16 games too.

Never knocked down, Canadian Champion for like 20 years........ Then on the other hand I've met guys with 20 fights who are hard to understand because of getting hit.
I've heard that discussed before, head size = being able to take more.... james Toney, Rampage Jackson, Chuvalo among others with big heads that can take a shot.

From a purely physics point of view it makes sense to me. Just like being in a larger/heavier vehicle in an accident. I would think that skull thickness would also play a fairly major role.

Speed, power, mass. Ring a bell?
Speed means nothing unless you factor in power and mass of the individuals coliding. Now factor in that football players are running as fast as they can towards each other. Never in hockey do you have two players looking to make contact. Therein lies one of the major differences.
Played junior b hockey and university football, i was physically BEAT down after games and practices. Hockey, id be sore but never like i was playing ball.

I actually only had one concussion in football yet 2 in hockey that were documented. Im sure i had more minor ones though.
Affects? Hard to say. I dont really have many cognitive issues that im aware of. I am a lot more sensitive to sounds and movement that i've come to realize but i also broke my neck (C2) 15 years ago as well so its difficult to say if any of my athletic head injuries are related to my experiences today.

I think just about everybody that has played football has had minor ones.I got a good one in rugby from a knee that knocked me out cold and fractured my cheekbone.Minor dizzy spells for quite some time.

Sucks, Belak was a funny guy. Listen to him on various radio shows, he was jokes.
But football is definitely worse. I had several 2 recorded and dont know how many minor ones. But like Nate said, no two guys skate at each other full speed. Also theres TONS of helmet on helmet hits in football,

Power is not part of the equation it's the answer. Speed and mass=power. I understand mass is part of the equation I was just to lazy to type it out I didn't realize I was doing a math test. Do I lose marks if I don't show my work? lol
