Hi.

I have a bit of a dilemma at the gym and I'm sorry to the people who will think this is dumb. It's not dumb enough to me that I won't ask for advice, so here goes...

I have always worked out for the last several years by myself, and it suited me fine. My workouts were kind of easy going with a little bit of this and that thrown in for good measure. I have changed that and am now training seriously. It's suits me fine to work out solo as I've always done but now I find I have a dilemma in that I now am getting into heavier weight, actually sooner than I thought but the workout that I created for myself has been showing great results so far! I now think I need a spotter for certain sets but am totally lost as to how to find this? Does one just ask someone? I'm a little shy and don't want to bother people, but for instance with the squat rack my balance is crummy and I can't get the heavier smaller barbels on the back of my neck without help. Just one example but I really want to push myself now and am at a plateau as to what I can do alone. Is my only alternative to hire a personal trainer?

Ok be nice....lol

what i usually do is just ask someone you see there regularily and just make eye contact and say hey, u mind if you spot me ? I don't think i've ever heard of someone turn down the opportunity to spot someone when they're asked. Its polite and courteous and it gives you the feeling of respect. If someone is asking you to trust them with ur life(a bit exagerated) they should feel gradutude that you asked them.

I'm sure if you have seen a guy in the area of where your working out and you have seen eachother around he wouldn't mind giving a helping hand. Heck even a stranger should be able to take a minute of time to help another person. I have no problems asking for a spot, I dont think they would like to see me lying there with 220 pounds lying on my neck and me choking to death rather then asking for a simple spot .

just my 2 cents ;) hope i helped

There is ways to go around does problem. Like squat you could do your squat on the SMITH Machine that will help you on stabelizing the bar and put a bench under your ass(lol) like that if your stuck at the bottom you just have to sit down and rack it. as for a spot if you ask some one try to ask someone that look like he knows what hes doing (helping you out not doing it for you).

If you need a spot just ask for one, I've never had anyone say no they are usually more than happy to. Other than that just know your limits, if your not gonna be able to do another rep then dont try its that simple.

I agree, but that last rep with a help of a spot, could indeed do good, because ur taking that extra step and pushing ur self to the limit!

GO HARD OR GO HOME

It could do good but if you dont have a spot it could mean big trouble

The Smith Machine is your best friend if you train alone.
