View Full Version : Healthiest oil to cook with?
Im getting pretty sick of 25-35g of walnuts with meals and I figure I can eat my food more easily and enjoy it more if I simply cook it with some healthy fats. The ratios will stay the same as I will just divide the portions with the fat divided up equally throughout the day.
What is the healthiest fat to cook fish or chicken with?
Extra virgin olive oil? Vegetable oil? Regular olive oil? Does it really matter?

Cooking with EV Olive Oil is a bad idea because it possesses a low smoke point.
^^ what does that mean?
nvm i looked it up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoke_point
i only cook the meat and veggies at a 6 temp on the stove though. how hot do you think that is? Im thinking 375ish but that is just a guess...

^^ what does that mean?
It means that it has a low tolerance for heat. So when you cook with it, assuming you're putting into contact with heat, it destroys the healthy properties of the oil.

coconut oil, med-low heat is what I like to use and recomend to people. Red Palm oil is hard to find, I did find a mix of it with canola though. Very good for you and Johns article is awesome.

what is "low heat" though? i cook everything at 5-6 on my stove, i dont know what the temp is of the burner at that heat. is that too high?
also, unrefined coconut oil seems to be only sold in health food stores. anyone know of one with a good deal on it?

I found a 54 ounce container of organic coconut oil on Amazon.com for $21.20 but then the shipping is $40 :(. I'm going to keep looking.
Sears.ca (online only) 5lbs of organic extra virgin coconut oil for 79.99. Not sure about shipping and/or if that's a good deal or not. Seems to be a lot more $$$ in Canada.
Canadian site. Ships from Alberta I believe $16.99 for 16 ounces organic extra virgin coconut oil. Free shipping on orders over $70 before tax.

They also have a 32 ounce jar of the same brand for $29.99 and another brand http://www.healthmart2000.com/cat119_1.htm 32 ounces for $22.99
So that's 96 ounces (6 pounds) for $77.94 tax included (assuming you buy something else and receive free shipping). So far that's the best price I've found.
This looks like a fairly good site too: http://www.rawnutrition.ca/html/nutiva.html
Also this one: http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/search/search.php?refine=y&keywords=coconut+oil&x=0&y=0
If you were looking to buy in bulk it would be 1 gallon (128 ounces) for $69.99 + shipping which depends on area. For me it would be another $38
^^ yes it is. Man we get screwed up here compared to the US.

don't worry about teh palm oil.
It is used pretty much as a condiment in Brazil because the flavour is quite specific.
Coconut is best, lard (from organic source if you can find) is good too, olive for salads (if you want to use for cooking be watchful)

I wondered about the coconut oil in the Superstores etc, because some don't clearly say refined or not. How can you tell? Just curious...thanks

It also needs to be cooked at a medium to low heat.
Avocado oil has a high smoke point and contains a balanced proportion of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. It is also loaded with proteins, lecithin, beta-carotene, ALA and vitamins A, D and E. Loblaws carries it but also a little higher on the price end.
I have bought coconut oil at homesense/winners for good prices as well as agave nectar.
