Hey P.

I was doing my first heavy set (495X5) and I did proper warmup. For some reason, I cough at my second rep and I felt some sharp pain on my lower back. I stopped deadlifting and continue working upper back (all seated).

Now my lower back is very tight and I'm scared that I wont be able to walk tomorrow. I put some ice for 10min already...

What else I can do?

Keep icing it 20min on 10 min off...take 800mg advil and dont lift anything....give it a day or so and get some ART done on it by a good sports chiro...where are you....Toronto?

NO not during the acute phase...that will inflame the area even worse...RICE in the acute phase ie 36-72 hours...rest + ice +compression + elevation...and topical anti-inflammatory (Pennsaid) if you have...oral if you dont (Ibuprofen or ASA)

Also sleep flat on your back with a pillow under your knees. It takes a lot of tension off the lower back.

Thank you. This morning, my lower back is still tight with a little pain. I lost some flexibility overnight. Lacing my shoes is a little bit tough lol.

Same thing happened a few years ago. Went a little bit too deep and heavy on the vertical legpress. Same flexibility and pain.

I assume there are no lower limb symptoms. I would recommend ice for the first 3-7 days, after which you may use whatever you feel is comfortable. Don't push the deadlifts right away and when you do reintroduce it, do so gradually. If you start to get sciatic pain, numbness or tingling on the legs you should definitely consult a Chiro for management.
