Hi guys, could sure use some help now. I've never injured myself to this extent but it appears i tore a hip muscle this morning. I widened my stance and figure i stressed some weaker muscles and it let go. I have it on ice and going to see a massage therapist tomorrow to see what can be done.

The emotional part hurts more, pretty bummed out. Squats are so important to me. Would this mean all leg training is out now? I was making great gains too. Damn it!!!!

Where do i go from here?

If you tore it you'll need more that a RMT. I would go to a sports clinic or at the very least your GP so that you can get booked in for an MRI. Is is bruised?

It's slightly discolored and doesn't feel like muscle.....more like jello. The ice helps and i can walk but stairs and ladders hurt bad. We don't have a sports clinic but will go see a gp after work i guess. This sucks.

I had a very strong feeling you were going to get injured squatting. How much were you squatting when it happened? Post up here if you can't find a place to go, maybe include your location (in general terms) and someone should be able to help you find a a good place to get assessed.

Sadly enough i was only doing 315 for reps. Probably poor form since i changed my stance and went too heavy. Its a little depressing. If i find out for sure, my brother is a rpn in ottawa. He said he'd help.

When you are feeling better get yourself a pair of single briefs - your hips will thank you.

Thanks Talo. Where would be a good place to order those briefs?

On another note, found out today that it's my tensor fascia lata, and it's a grade 1. I'm out a month or so apparently. Massages and resistance bands in a week. I feel better now. I've never had an injury like this so I was paranoid as hell and expected the worse. Sounds like I'll live.

My next question, is how do I tailor my training to this. Is this going to be a lifetime injury which may come back again or is this simply a set back?

thank you guys.

These guys are great to deal with.

If I was you I would lay off doing anything that involves the hip for training. Do upper for a month.

It's only a month , not the end of the world.

I find your tear confusing me. I tore the TENSOR FASCIAE LATAE 12 yrs ago. It gives me issues and then still trying to avoid issues..

Hip? go see a PT. My Dr could not say what I tore...my PT put his finger tips into it and I SCREAMED..lol. he asked me not to do that again, screaming ..it was bad for his business.,

LOL - no worries. Hope it's getting better for you.

Now after all the talk mine is starting to stiffen up - plus squatting 3-4 times a week doesn't help :)

Well just an update, I've been seeing a sports medecine therapist weekly since the tear and it's doing much better. I have been squatting, but taking it easy. I may have pushed it a little too hard yesterday and tried a 365. I pulled it off, but it's tight today. Definitely going to cut that in half for the next couple of weeks. In my mind it felt like an eternity with little to no squatting. It took a couple of weeks alone just with the bar. Looks to be a long road before I see 450 again.

If your not already you should foam roll your glutes , hams , quads , IT band before and after squatting. It will really help with the tightness the next day.

unfortunately I can't do any of what you mention. I train at 4:45am then straight to work so I have little to no time for therapy.

Really ?

Therapy is more important, so make time for it or you wont get better.

Oh yeah, make the time or you'll really regret it down the road..

Take it from those who've been there before, repair and recover or you WILL live to regret it in the future.

There's more to life than traiming, like being able to walk when you're 50. All these things add up to problems later in life if not cared for and treated when they happen.

Ditto. Heal properly or you'll have it follow you long into the future. Don't know your age but I find the older you get the more an injury tends to linger or the pain from scar tissue never really goes away. Unless you make money from bodybuilding, I really would suggest to do everything you can to heal properly.

Nice vid btw, Talo :)

Don't get me wrong, I do go for my weekly therapy, and I am stretching more, but it's the self therapy before and after leg day I can't do. I barely have time to shower after training and book it to work for 8 to 10 hours. There is no window there unless I get up even earlier. As it stands, I'm up at 3:30, eating, driving 40 minutes to the gym, train and off to work. I'm quite certain I could never make a week if I had to get up even earlier. Six hours of sleep is a stretch on some days!

I do understand what you are explaining, and I'm trying to follow your advice as best I can with what time I have.

thanks for the help.

gym is not an absolute. Health is.

Do the damn work and stop thinking the gym is your most important task. It willl be there when you are better. It's good that way.

Pre workout can take a little as 5 minutes - Dynamic stretching is quick . Just start at the feet and move up to the neck ( or the other way around ) Roll every joint - Ankle, knee , hip, shoulders, elbows, wrists and neck. Small to bigger rolls. Feel the stretch , but don't over stretch.

Post workout - Static stretching . If your in a rush then just focus on what you targeted during your workout. It can also take a little as 5 min. If you have more time, spend it on this part.

Rehab - This can be done anywhere and anytime. That small exercise, for example can be done throughout the day in spurts. I'm sure you can set aside 30 seconds a few times a day.

We aren't coming down on you , we just want to make sure you stay healthy and mobile. Once this issue is felling better ( not fixed, just in hibernation) there will be another one just around the corner.

I often foam roll or stretch an area I am not working on a particular day in between sets of what I am working. So if I am doing military press I might use my rest periods to work on loosening up low back and hamstrings. Then when I get around to squats the next day I am not as stiff and tight. Helps me save some time in the gym.

When you mention "just in hibernation", are you saying it will never be 100%? Will that tear be a weak spot for life? I definitely do not want to tear it again, so if I'm reading this right it means I can never squat at max capacity?
