While not a steroid hormone it is a fat loss product used by bodybuilders. Info from Anabolics 2009. This is a very dangerous product and should be used with extreme caution and avoided if possible.

DNP (2,4-Dinitrophenol)

Description:
DNP is one of the most controversial drugs in use by bodybuilders. This agent is not sold for human use anywhere in the world at this time, but is readily available as an industrial chemical. Among other things, it is used as an intermediary for the production of certain dyes, for photographic development, as a fungicide, in wood pressure-treatment to prevent rotting, and as an insecticide. It is technically classified as a poison. Although quite incongruous with this list of strong industrial/chemical uses, this chemical was sold during the era of patent medicine as a diet drug for humans. It is this property of dinitrophenol that remains of interest to some bodybuilders today.
Dinitrophenol induces weight loss by uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation, thereby markedly increasing the metabolic rate and body temperature . While this is an extremely effective way of producing rapid weight loss, there seems to be no ceiling to DNP's temperature increasing effect. Herein lies perhaps its most dangerous trait; it may allow body temperature to rise to level that can be damaging, even fatal. Writer Carl Malmberg made perhaps one of the earliest and most famous quotes about this danger back in the 1930s when he told of a physician who was "literally cooked to death" from using it. This was far from an isolated case, and deaths associated with DNP have continued over the decades. For example, a recent highly publicized story concerns a man that died on Long Island, NY in 2001 after taking DNP for only four days. The dose used was reported to be 600 mg per day, just three 200 mg capsules.

History;
The fat-loss properties of DNP were reportedly first noticed during World War I, when overweight men working with DNP in munitions plants started losing substantial amounts of weight. It did not take very long for this chemical to be identified as the cause. Soon after, it was packaged as a drug product. By 1935, more than 100,000 Americans had already used Jlpatent medicine" remedies that included DN~ In fact, DNP was the first synthetic drug that was ever used for weight reduction in this country. While it was available, it was being widely advertised as a new, safe, and effective way to get thin. Popular brand names for DNP included Dinitriso, Nitromet, Dinitrenal and Alpha Dinitrophenol. At the peak of DNP's popularity, the drug could be found in pharmacies all across the country.
While the drug may have worked for the intended purpose, it was also introduced at a time before government review and approval of drug safety. In this regard DNP had some very strong shortcomings, and it didn't take long for reports of side effects to began pouring in. One such incident involved a dozen women in California who were temporarily blinded by the drug. Numerous reports of DNP-linked cataracts began coming in from as far away as France and Italy. It was said to be happening with doses as little as 100 mg daily when taken for long periods. Reports of more serious injury, even death, from DNP use followed. With such highly unfavorable safety reports, the drug was soon pulled. By 1938 it was off the market for good. It has never returned as a medicine for human or animal consumption. Even so, reports of death associated with DNP use continue to this day.

Author's Note: I was hesitant to even include a profile of dinitrophenol in this book, for fear it might entice someone who otherwise may not have known about it to use it. But ultimately I decided it would be better to include the historical information about the drug. The true story of DNP is a scary one and needs to be remembered. Bodybuilders must understand that the reemergence of underground DNP in the late 1990s was not a revolutionary new achievement in fat loss, but a scary repitition of one of the biggest mistakes of the patent medicine era. It is a drug from a time when an unregulated market was allowing dangerous chemicals like this to harm the public. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) exists today to protect the public from such scenarios. Almost all experts today agree that DNP is a dangerous drug, and is not recommended for weight loss.

How Supplied:
DNP is not supplied in a form prepared for human or veterinary consumption. It is available as a research or industrial chemical only.

Structural Characteristics:
DNP (2,4-Dinitrophenol) is a cellular metabolic poison with the chemical designation 1-hydroxy-2,4-dinitrobenzene.

Side Effects:
There are many potential side effects associated with DNP use including increased heart rate, increased breathing rate, nausea, elevated body temperature, insomnia, profuse sweating, rash, skin lesions, decreased white blood cell count, cataracts, coma, and death.

Administration:
DNP is not approved for use in humans. Prescribing guidelines are unavailable. A common dose used among bodybuilders is reportedly 2mg per kg of bodyweight per day. This calculates to a dosage of 200 mg per day for a person of approximately 220 pounds of bodyweight. Note that this population tends to retain more lean muscle mass than the average (sedentary) person of the same bodyweight, which may substantially alter the results and side effects of a given dosage. Admittedly, fat loss due to DNP use is highly rapid and extreme/ with some people losing as much as .5 to 1 pound of fat weight per day. This can equate to a drop of 15 or 20 pounds in only a few weeks. Given the high risks associated with DNP use, however, it is usually taken for only a few weeks at a time. The strong incidence of side effects is also regarded as an indicator that the drug should be discontinued immediately. Note that most experts regard DNP as a drug with inherent dangers that far outweigh its potential benefits.

Availability:
DNP is not available as a human or veterinary medication in any part of the world. Availability of products intended for human use is entirely in the underground realm, where products, dosages, and safety are not the subject of government approval.

No sir not for me. I get lean real easy plus never get to far out of shape. This stuff just seems real dangerous and i thought id make a profile so somebody didnt try it before they know what they are getting themselves into. Been reading the William Llyewans Anabolics 2009 book very good resource.

Men seem to tolerate more dnp. Every women I know who tried dnp had very bad hives and had to stop...

i get the rash side effect... but ketotifen keeps it in check and also helps to sleep (take at night).

When on id drink 10 liters of water easily ed. Always got bottles next to me wherever i am. Low fat, high protein moderate to somewhat lowered carbs will yield results... alongside cardio, lifting will be affected but in general take something like clen or EC or some other stim to give u energy... and ull do alot better...

Its not for everyone... but it works for me and ive used it multiple times... im not a naturally lean guy... im not as gifted as some ecto-mesomorphs.. im a meso-endomorph of sorts and tall.. and i have dieted/cut/etc... like hell but it just sucks and u lose too much muscle and all the time spent and it affects ur life... with dnp... in a week ull get results ud get in a month of hell... its not lazyiness or lack of will.. in fact it takes will power to go through with dnp... but the results speak for themselves... lose 7lbs of pure fat u may lose 2lbs of muscle which ull gain back easily especially if on cycle...

Its unnecessary and dangerous...if you are having trouble losing fat then our diet is not optimal nor is your training or cardio schedule. It doesn't take a genetically gifted person to get lean only one who is doing things correctly. I've had cliets drop over 100Lbs when prior to that they had issue dropping 10lbs. Clen, T3, gh, DNP all do assist with fat loss yes...but they add but small percentages if you are doing things optimally.

I think taking this pretty much automatically make you an asshole. Am I that far off?

How could one ever justify the risks associated? Even at low doses its extremely unhealthy and stupid.

Eat better and move around more.

DNP use just like anything, when used properly is just as safe as anything else. How do i now? Because ive used it! Curiousity got the better of me and i found this compound to be very interesting and ill post Some cool studies about it later. I used it safely, eod, and I obviously know what Im doing nutritionally. I had a total body recomp in 6-7 weeks and dropped a mere 2 pounds. The side effects were minimalmother than being a bit warmer than normal but otherwise i wouldnt even know i was on it. It's a weapon in a BBers arsenal and it's going to be used so why not educate instead try to scare people away from it? There are different ways to use it, the safest way it the slow and steady approach and Side effects are next to none. You can sit here and say its for lazy people and what not, the same can be said for others things we may use in a way. But if someone came to me, said they wanted to use DNP, I would not look down upon them and tell them it's dangerous and all the bs floating around about it. I'd educate the risks and various ways of using it and they can make their choice from there.

If it turned out that small doses of paint thinner made some lab mice lose weight in studies im sure bodybuilders would be all over it. Some things are just not worth using compared to just making a concerned effort in your lifting / eating schedule. I fail to see how the risks are worth the pay off if used at such low doses it barely even elicits an effect.

This line sums it up.

"This agent is not sold for human use anywhere in the world at this time, but is readily available as an industrial chemical....It is technically classified as a poison."

If huffing glue made you get really lean would you do that to? Use common sense and draw the line somewhere.

HOW NOT TO MESS UP ON DNP FAQ – By CandyRoids

Since some guys have been playing around and disrespecting DNP and then griping to the forums about the painful results, we need to make this VERY specific and VERY correct so that people won’t keep jumping for DNP out of curiosity, or without the willpower they need to operate this respondibly. So here are my experienced guidelines to using it the RIGHT way.

FIRST GUIDLINE: Dosing. Use ONLY 200mg a day for the first four days. I don’t care that you don’t “feel” anything yet and you wanna bump it up. DNP accumulates in the body, and not “feeling” something means NOTHING. It’s there, and it’s working (the effect on metabolism begins within two hours of the first dose!). Four days will let you test your tolerance: do you have an allergy? Does it give you a rash? etc.

Only after those four days do you bump it up, by 200mg a day. The average dose is 400-600/day, and more than that gets a little severe. A full gram is the highest dose I’ve heard anyone use. I’ve used that much, and it’s hell. I like to stay around 600 a day, which is HOT but safe and effective. Take caps even hours apart through the day, ending about 4-5 PM.

SECOND GUIDLINE…How to eat on DNP. This is purely personal experience, because some guys like to carb-deplete *before* using DNP (then eat carbs as usual while on), and other guys like a low-carb approach throughout. Both are fine. Using DNP is the only time that fructose is a desireable cutting carb, because it keeps the liver replentished. That reduces lethargy and spares muscle.
Be aware that eating high-carb foods WILL increase the heat sensation within an hour, and last about 2 hours. That means don’t eat carbs before bed unless you want those night sweats to be even WORSE.
Personally, I ate whatever the hell I wanted! IHOP, chinese, fajitas…Yes, I burned hot, but I still lost 1.5 pounds every 2 days. Keep protein HIGH for muscles’ sake, and try it yourself.

Foods I suggest including:
Blueberry yogurt. Blueberries are excellent antioxidants, and yogurt cultures help with digestive function, gas, and stool consistency (disgustingly soft stools are common during DNP).

Oregano-based foods. Oregano is perhaps one of the most potent antioxidants around,a nd one spoonful counts as a vegetable serving. See this article
Pineapple – I’ve found that pineapple helps alleviate those “DNP Blues”. The fructose helps, and pineapple enzymes aid in protein digestion.
V8 – one 12-ounce can supplies six servings of veggies, concentrated as an excellent source of antioxidants, lycopene, and recovery of electrolytes.
Oatmeal – high-fiber foods are necessary. You’ll find out why around, oh, day 5 or so. Trust me.

THIRD GUIDELINE…Supplements and DNP. I suggest:
ECA – DNP is not a stimulant. To keep energy high and aid in fat loss, use an ECA. Some advisors suggest that regular ephedrine is preferable to norephedrine because of the more direct “hit” of energy.
Prohormones – perfectly fine on DNP. I used 1-AD just to help keep strength and muscle up, and it worked fine. No problems here. You won’t GROW muscle on DNP, but it’ll help with strength and protection.
Obvious stuff – multivitamin, ZMA, etc.
Biotest PowerDrive – No, I’m not pimping Biotest. But PowerDrive is an excellent pre-workout mixture that actually works. Plus it’s low-carb (only 15 calories total), so it won’t cause carb-heat in the middle of your workout.
Antioxidants – I’m giving my own personal list, and why I use them:
Alpha Lipoic Acid – aids in fat management and blood sugar, and an excellent antioxidant.
Grape seed extract
Syntrax Radox
Green Tea
Inositol – mood enhancement, antioxidant, and muscle support. 1 gram/3x day
Ellagic acid – protects cell DNA/RNA from damage by free radicals, and may even atack cancerous cells. 400mg/twice a day
Fruit antioxidants – beyond-a-century’s powder of high-potency natural fruit anti’s. 1 gram, 2-3x day.
Trimethylglyceine – antioxidant, helps move fat and blood lipids into the liver and out of the body. 500mg, 2x day.
Vitamins E and C

Supplements NOT to use:
Any medications that suppress energy. No allergy meds, antidepressants, muscle relaxers, or beta blockers. DNP will have you low as it is; don’t worsen your body’s energy by taking something that suppresses you further.
DRUGS – Sheesh, you’d think I wouldn’t have to mention this, but two idiots in particular (right here on this forum) recently affirmed that some people still just don’t get it. NO alcohol (not even “moderate”), NO ecstasy, NO GHB, etc. If you don’t have the willpower to forego these habits, DNP is not for you.
Syntrax Swole – a personal discovery. I tried Swole while on DNP…once. Two hours of hell, feeling inside-out.

FOURTH GUIDELINE…working out on DNP. Keep lifting short, 30-40 minutes. DNP works very well, causing your body to use 150% or more the calories per action you’d normally use. That means DON’T try to repeat your usual workouts. Drop to moderate weights, 8-12 reps, not to failure, and with plenty of walking rest between sets. You are NOT going to grow muscle on DNP, so don’t use your usual heavy routine. Since DNP can cause light-headedness and heat dizzyness, you have my permission to skip squats in favor of leg presses this time.

Cardio is a controversial one. My advice – do NOT do cardio on high doses of DNP (600mg or more). It’s dangerous and counterproductive. Below that amount, some cardio is fine, but keep it to 20 minutes and not at full-gallop. Remember, DNP will drain water from your quickly, causing you to leech out minerals, vitamins, and salts. Don’t overdo it.

During exercise, consume at least 1 liter of water per 30 minutes of work, whether you’re thirsty or not. DNP is evil in the way it blunts thirst, while at the same time doing the cruel trick of bloating your body with water WHILE dehydrating you from water in your organs. MAKE yourself drink. Always folllow DNP exercise with antioxidants, carbs, and this is a good time to use your multivitamin.

Don’t feel embarrassed about poor workouts. Just this morjning I did a workout with a whopping nine sets (wimp!) before calling it quits. Listen to your body, and let it tell you when enough’s enough; don’t guage workouts by what you *usually* can do otherwise.

Here’s my research. This is AMAZING! Not only has not a single test found it to be carcinogenic, but test after tyest after test find that DNP actually ATTACKS cancer cells, and helps anti-cancer medications work better, and helps anti-leukemia medications work without destroying cell DNA, and suppresses tumor growth by 20-50%. The summaries are all right here, friends. Karma me up!

DNP is Ames negative, and does not promote tumors. See for yourself at http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/

This study found that DNP has a toxic effect on cells of the colon, with “toxic” defined in two ways: first, it interfered with metabolism (this we know—it’s the intended effect of DNP users!) and second, it interfered with bowel inflammation (not a health risk. This is caused by osmotic effect, with the worst results being softened stools and gas).

The control poly-DNP-RNAs with random or sense nucleotide sequence are completely inactive.” Plain English? DNP can be synthesized as an anti-cancer compound, because tests show that it blocks mutagens but does NOT affect non-mutagenic (healthy) cells, and has no RNA effects on them.

In this study, researchers found that DNP abrogates—or disrupts—cytotoxicity in hamsters (using cancerous cells). In other words, it helps cancerous cells commit suicide by neutering themselves. “Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) synthesis in the intact Ehrlich ascite carcinoma cells is selectively inhibited by papaverin (ED50 = 0.01 mM), 2,4-dinitrophenol (DPN; ED50 = 5 microM), and actinomycin D (ED50 = 0.1 microgram/ml).”

Also: “Experimental studies on animals do not show toxic effects of dinitrophenol on the kidney. Anatomical-pathological examinations of animals, even those which died from a massive dose of dinitrophenol, do not reveal any important anatomical changes, except a small degree of cytolysis. Interestingly, one medical theory on a health ADVANTAGE of DNP is that the slight increase in thermogenic temperature simulates the fever a body induces during a viral attack. The body increases itsheat to protect organs but kill viruses, and some theorize that DNP can do the same thing, thus killing viruses in the body. In this mechanism, DNP may have an immune-enhancing effect.

2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP): a weight loss agent with significant acute toxicity and risk of death.
Grundlingh J, Dargan PI, El-Zanfaly M, Wood DM.
Source

Emergency Medicine, Whittington Hospital, London, UK.
Abstract

2,4-Dinitrophenol (DNP) is reported to cause rapid loss of weight, but unfortunately is associated with an unacceptably high rate of significant adverse effects. DNP is sold mostly over the internet under a number of different names as a weight loss/slimming aid. It causes uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation; the classic symptom complex associated with toxicity of phenol-based products such as DNP is a combination of hyperthermia, tachycardia, diaphoresis and tachypnoea, eventually leading to death. Fatalities related to exposure to DNP have been reported since the turn of the twentieth century. To date, there have been 62 published deaths in the medical literature attributed to DNP. In this review, we will describe the pattern and pathophysiology of DNP toxicity and summarise the previous fatalities associated with exposure to DNP.

Low dose actually gives great results. No negatives. You think clens safer and healthier than DNP use ?

Clen has just as many myths associated with it as DNP. Yes DNP does work, so does usnic acid, and other less known items...which if abused can lead to serious health issues. In the grand scheme of things ie competitive BB those in the know realize what is necessary to get to competitive BF levels and DNP has never been included...mainly for the fact that it is not truly understood and the potential for abuse through ignorance is high. The same can be said for insulin...yes it works but it also has potential for abuse and health issues...and in most cases is unnecessary. The same can be sad of aspirin for that matter...it can cure a headache and it can also kill you...things need to be taken in context.
Ill say it again and it holds true for everyone...diet is the most important thing....ive seen guys running DNP who think they are losing fat yet look atrocious and eat like crap...total waste.

Well said P! What pisses me off is a lot of people on the boards taking it are using higher doses for shorter stints expecting a miracle and a loss of 10lbs of fat per 7 day course. Of course your going to feel like shit doing it that route and it's not healthy. The other thing is these guys don't change their diet, they take DNP and rely on that for the fat loss. DNP taken responsibly with a perfect diet and training, supplementation will get you lean, fast and safely when done responsibly and you don't much at all. I hate how Clen makes me feel it tires me, burns me out I just feel like crap and that's the last thing I need in a contest prep or to cut up for something. Eph works ok but I. Jittery all day and burn out by dinner time. DNP I don't even know I'm on it and feel normal minus running a bit warmer than usual but I run hotter than most year round anyways.

Sorry for reactivating an old thread, but the DNP info above attributed to "Candyroids" is MY work--it has been stolen and used around the web, and some imposter scammers have used it to boost fake bona fides. I'm not trying to get credit, just keep attribution correct so that scammers can't keep using my work to create false guises of credibility with it.
