Hello everyone. I am just getting started again and I am having a realy hard time. I am 30 years old and looking to get back into weight lifting. I never competed but I use to go to the gym 4 - 5 days a week prior to having my kids. I was pretty cut back then and it is alomost painful to look back at old pictures and see what I once was. I am now over weight and out of shape. So I have decieded to stop feeling sorry for myself and get off my butt and do something about it. My problem is that the gym that I use to go to 9 yrs ago is now closed so I joined NuBodys and hired a personal trainer but I don't find that she is hearing me at all. As much as I try to explaine that I am looking to gain definition and build more mussel she continues to suggest that I stick to running ( I have ran 2 1/2 marathons in the last year) to burn fat, try some pilates and when I get about 10lbs off I can start with some weights. When I was trainning before I use to do 3 different exercises for each mussel group.....but now I am really thinking that is old school and I am just being difficult. because I want start adding weights now. I currently weigh 136lbs and stand 5"2, at my best I was 121lbs same height. Any help would be greatly appreicated.

I bet she wants you to run on a beach. She probably suggested this because you told her you wanted to get some "mussels".

Hi Seadreamer, welcome aboard. I wouldn't listen to the trainer and go ahead and add weights now. You will burn fat and tone at the same time. You mentioned you're a former gym-rat so why did you hire a trainer? Eat right, lift and be happy. Don't let the trainer nazi ruin things. GL and keep us posted.

I would ditch the 'trainer' and do your own thing. You aren't a newbie to lifting, so if you just keep it simple, stick to the basics and have the diet to match I'm sure you'll see gains.

Thanks for the replys. The reason I thought that I would start off with a trainer is just to have someone there to correct me if I wasn't postitioned properly of if there was a new improved way of doing things but I think you guys are right. I am just going to take the bull by the horns and figure this out on my own based on what I did begfore.

It could also be that she has no idea how to get you set up into weight training? Nubody's, from what I understand, is a much more 'fitness-is-our-product' oriented company than it is a gym for people wanting to seriously improve themselves. I would suggest you go back to the old school training, focus on nutrition, and keep in some cardio. If you're not locked into a contract, then I'd even suggest looking into other clubs to possibly join, ones that might not be as mainstream.
